anticks is right Timelord. Trust me on this, appendicitis is not fun. Get checked by your Doctor. (Especially if you start vomiting or experience diarrhoea).

and I don't really want to because for some reason I've decided that it's smoking related and I've already convinced him that I gave up last June.

I very much doubt your doctor is going to castigate you for that, most GPs are used to having their patients tell the occasional porky.

Of course, you'd probably feel better if you actually quit. But that's your choice. Either way it's better to let your Doc know you still smoke so he can factor that into any possible diagnosis.

Um, there is yellow liquid coming out of my nose. It doesn't look like mucus, it looks like wee.

I have a headache, haven't banged my head though.
Is my brain coming out?

Sounds like pus of some sort. Maybe an abcess burst. Have you been picking?

How bad is your headache?

Princess

I'm thinking it might just be some sort of deviant mucus now. I'm less panicked.

The headache isn't so bad that I can't walk around and talk to people. But it is occasionally making me grit my teeth and stuff like that. It's worse than headaches are for me normally.

Haven't been picking because I am a very classy well trained sort. I have been blowing my nose a lot though, I have a pretty momentous cold.

My nose doesn't feel blocked anymore. Which is good. But the liguid is now a pretty persistent trickle.

Clear yellow fluid coming out of your nose could be a CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) leak. Since you are still able to read and type this probably isn't what it is, but it's not a good thing no matter WHAT it is, and you should really go to the hospital emergency room, or at the very least call your primary care physician and tell him or her about these symptoms. If there was clear yellow fluid coming out of MY nose I would be very alarmed. Good luck!

It appears to have stopped now. Over the course of the day the fluid slowly got more and more opague until it was just snot.

Maybe it was like snotlite?

Could it have been lymph, do you think? (The stuff that comes out of blisters)

My teeth really hurt. Going to try getting some sensidone tonight as it's very inconvenient to get to the dentist (like $40 cab ride both ways). It's all of my teeth so probably not a cavity, right?

Are your teeth any better? I missed that--I'd have suggested swigging a soluable paracetamol and maybe chewing a clove/dabbing with clove oil to see if that helps.

Actually they are surprisingly better--I'm not sure what's in that magic toothpaste. Possibly soundwaves if today's net surfing is to be believed.

Oh, is that the "nerves transmit sound not electricity" thing? I believe that the active ingredient in Sensodyne is aspirin; perhaps they've taught it to sing as well?

Is that really true? About Sensodyne?

Oh, is that the "nerves transmit sound not electricity" thing?

Yeah, that's the one.

Aspirin, eh? Leads me to believe it's more a temporary solution then. I got the (hopefully singing) toothpaste on a recommendation from a friend. I questioned him on whether he was still using it or if he'd been able to switch back to regular toothpaste and he said he'd switched back without having the pain return. If I'd known it was a glorified topical anesthetic, I might'n't have purchased it.

Also, apologies for my slaughtered initial spelling of the toothpaste I'll continue to call "the thoothpaste" for fear of misspelling it yet again.

Thoothpaste. Sigh. I really shouldn't be trusted with a keyboard.

Lord Henry got bit by bugs on our (Italian) holiday, and unlike normal man-flu-type-stuff some of these have seriously Gone Wrong rather than just being a normal mild inconvenience blown out of all proportion... Is there anything that can be done for bites that go uck and weepy and swell up huge and red (um, a few inches of epic red swelling either side of the bite), or should he rush immediately to a caring GP?

Sensodyne comes in two types, one has five percent potassium nitrate, and the other, ten percent strontium chloride.

And, bites that go puffy, oozy, and generally bad? To the doctor, I'm afraid. If you've tried a general anti-bite cream or spray, anyway. Might want to try that, first. Couple bucks versus whatever the hospital/clinic would charge.

(And invest in a little venom-extractor suctiony thing, if it's a regular or semi-regular problem with bug bites. Again; couple bucks.)

yeah I use Sensodyne and it works..but the teeth sensitivity returns if you stop using it. In a pinch I've used hotsauce. It kills the pain for a few hours but doesnt decrease the sensitivity to cold or heat (which is what I had)

Christ. They put a strontium compound in toothpaste? At once cool and scary ...

I have developed a tic in my right eye. Twitchy-twitchy-twitch, it goes. It's very annoying. Anything I can take or do to relax it, apart from doing less and being less busy and stressed?

To those with sensitive teeth, I've always found Duraphat Rinse (it's made by Colgate)to be a big help. It even helped after I bleached my teeth when I suffered pretty badly.

Presuming one has a small injury that is/is becoming infected, what are some home remedies that one can use to can augment antibiotics, or hold one over until one gets antibiotics?

Measures I've already been taking:

Irrigating with salt water
Yer good old fashioned bandaid
Antibiotic ointment
Ibuprofen for inflammation
Vitamins to keep up my immune system

Measures I'm considering:

Iodine/Betadine
Wet fennel-seed compress (it worked when I had my wisdom teeth out...)
Colloidal silver

Things I've ruled out:

Hydrogen peroxide (not good for open wounds)
Isopropyl alcohol (didn't seem to do any good, besides hurting)
Tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, lemon juice and barbed wire (too caustic at this point)

Measures I've decided I'll take only if necessary, but want to avoid:

Going to the ER
Attacking the offending limb with a tourniquet and hacksaw

Ummm...
1. How small is small?
2. Where is it?
3. What caused it?
4. And what about it seems infected (red, spewing pus, swollen, etc)?

Aright fine. One has an ingrown toenail. I don't know why I'm hugely embarrassed about that but I am. And it's definitely infected: surrounding area warm to the touch, red, swollen, more painful than it should be. And pus, of course, just to make me feel even better.

Zip, if it has got to the point where it is infected then you really need to think about seeing a doctor. Trying to outwait an ingrowing toenail, especially an infected one, is just going to cause more problems down the road.

Aye. I had a recurring ingrowing toenail (I think due to having my toes stood on one time too many at gigs) - haven't been able to play footy since. Get thee to the doc. They might need to to trim the nail, so as to allow the wound to seal and the nail to regrow propery. Remember, the worse it gets, the more extreme measures your doctor may need to take. Have you had it before?

Useful NHS direct info here.

yeah, my Dad did that when he was young and foolish, leaving his ingrowing toenail too long. it got SO bad, that ended up chopping the end of his bleeding toe off!

I am going to go, as soon as I can find a doctor to see, but what I'm looking for are things I can do in the meantime to manage it and make it hurt less.

Also, stories about "this made my cousin's leg fall off in his sleep" are not helpful. I'm worried enough as is.

the spouse was plagued by the same thing and hot salt water foot soaks helped until he could get the nail to grow properly (he had to soak the infection out, cut the nail back, regrow it properly).

the water should not be so salty that it would sting to drink or so hot as to scald the skin. I'm told the heat improves circulation to the area and the salty water disinfects the wound site. Basically one is helping the body's natural defenses.

Watch for radiating red lines spreading from the site which indicates a need for the ER.
