I am on first name terms with Mal Pope (wrote the theme song for Fireman Sam) & am best buds with Louise Redknapps cousin. That's about as famous as people I've met gets. Except for the jam session with two former members of the band Yes & Eric Clapton.

I used to know PJ Harvey- she was in my friend (at the time) John Parish's band Automatic Dlamini. They rocked. It was a Somerset thing.
I've met David Tibet a few times, which I'm very impressed by, but usually just go back to talk to my friends who are all going "who the fuck was that weird-looking guy you were talking to?" rather than being impressed.
Met Julian Cope a few times, too- once memorably had a huge argument with his wife Dorian round a campfire at Newbury (when the road protests were on) about whose house was better for my friend Eric (who'd been living on the campsite constantly for about two months) to go to for the weekend to sort his head out. Which ended up with me taking the piss out of her for being a big fan of Styx (which was fairly surreal), and her then giving us a lift to the railway station, having decided our house was better.

Oh, and on my last day working for Forbidden Planet we had David Boreanaz (Angel) in doing a signing. And they got him to sign my leaving card (and I didn't even have to pay the traditional tenner). And I once shook Buzz Aldrin's hand and asked him if being on the Moon was really mental. He didn't understand me, but was very nice.

i think there should be two threads on this. one should be on meeting celebs - tacky stories, please, like interviewing the chuckle brothers - the other on meeting people a poster has respect for, if there was some kind of point to it. as it is, we're talking about people who should be accessible anyway. since many of us are involved in music/art etc, i certainly wouldn't elevate the likes of most of the people mentioned here (including and especially my own silly attempts to impress people) above any barbeperson. or any jo in the street for that matter.

Stoat - you're friends with John Parish?
Tell him I *loved* the soundtrack to "Rosie". I don't have any PJ Harvey albums, and might not even recognize any of her songs (I've heard a couple) but I know that soundtrack album inside and out.

Wow, loads of us have met Rollins. I have seen him twice, but he stared me down both times, once in a corridor at a show and once in a bookshop.

Alan Moore's lovely.

Pat Mills was patronising.

Kenneth Clarke (the politician) came for dinner once. I was between him and his gunman and if I had known anything about leftie politix I would have stabbed him with my fishknife. But I didn't, so I didn't. I was only young at the time, bless me.

I met a concentration camp survivor called Eva Schloss. Who's books's not all that well-known, but she still made an impression and a half.

Jonny Vaughn seemed nice, but I only met him very briefly, 'cos it was a live Big Breakfast show and I'd been up all night boozing and was worried I wasn't making much sense.

I have also attached a bungee rope to Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards. It held.

And best of all, I've snogged Rockbitch.

*swoons*

Grant: "Stoat - you're friends with John Parish?"

Used to be (haven't seen him in years)- his mum was also headmistress at my school. He also played the drums on a really bad goth demo we did when I was about 17 and he was running a class on studio recording...

Snogging rockbitch rules, but my girlfriend doesn't like me going anywhere near them for some reason.
It really is a small world, innit. There's what, a thousand people on here from all over the place, and some of us have snogged (or worse - or should that be better?) the same people. Either that or rockbitch snog like Ozzy swears.

Oh, hang on, they probably do. Rock n Roll!

By the way sfd, I would like to pop a thread together with the starting point of the Chuckle Brothers interview, but it's really, really a dull story. They turned up for an opening of a kid's centre on my patch, I talked to them a bit about their background, their telly work, and why they were there. They were quite dull. Then they went out and did the whole 'to me, to you' bit for the kids. Why can't people be more like their public persona all the time? I wanted them to be wacky...

...I was reading through here as I thought someone had had a James Brown story, but that must have been elsewhere...

Juliette Lewis and Xander from Buffy were in my bookstore last week, stoned and glassy-eyed. The funny bit is that as they were buying their things, Xander asked if we sell condoms... ay!

Christopher Reeves - in the supermarket about 10 yrs ago
Michelle Pfieffer - in a different supermarket about 7 yrs ago
6 yrs ago spent an entire evening stalking Steve Urkel at a huge beach party, it got tougher the more whisky I drank, never found him
Carly Simon - as she was viewing & considering buying my then-bf's house - 5 yrs ago

In college I was friends with the daughter of Mikhail Baryshnikov & Jessica Lange. So I saw Mikhail a couple times and once after my friend's dance performance I sort of hung out with Jessica at a small intimate cast party. She seemed very shy - but also almost no one talked to her bc everyone was so bent on being casual & not starstruck.

I was invited to my friend's wedding but couldn't make it unfortunately - and I missed seeing her stepdad Sam Shepard get drunk & jump in the pool with his Armani suit on.

"Did lunch" with Grant Morrison & (I think) Steve Severin
Had Pat Mills stay over one night
Was (apparently) v. rude to Julian Cope at a book launch
Spent a lovely evening at Arbor Low Stone Circle with Mister P.Orridge (plus about 100-odd TOPYites, so not really that exclusive)
Had a row with Richard Dawkin at a party

Oh yeah, and my g/f once sewed some trousers for Tom Jones.

And, from the other end of the scale...

Urinal sighting. Donkeys years ago. Mark Keds from the Senseless Things. But I actually ran to the urinal at the other end of the wall, because in a moment of panic I realised that I probably wouldn’t be able to go if I got too close to him. Haven’t seen anyone famous since, but its probably just as well, if that’s what Mark fucking Keds does to me.
