fucking shit, utopia, philadelphia! haha, i always get amused by meeting other philly locals online. it's just so weird seeing that philly is actually kind of a big place. i even know two porn models here in philly...

yeah, it's horrible here. you walk in on the first day of class, get issued hair dye, usually red, your artist's uniform and a copy of the Strokes CD. this school really doesn't have much in the way of diversity. everyone does really look the same. and don't worry about the unique thing, i know i'm different from the other people in UArts.

Doesn't Camille Paglia teach there?

I've found that different art schools have different student cultures - I'm pretty familiar with University of the Arts, and you guys are pretty dead-on in nailing those kids. I'm from Parsons/New School, so there's a lot more rich kids going there, and there's a lot of guys and girls who look and dress like models. There's not as many emo kids, but there are some. A fair few indie-type kids (note: indie and emo are very different aesthetics. There's a huge world of cultural and satorial difference between K/Kill Rock Stars/Matador and Vagrant/Jade Tree, let me tell you), hip hop kids. I've found that there's not all that much difference between the artier kids at NYU and the regular students at Parsons and SVA.

However, F.I.T. is totally different - there's a lot of metalhead scary Limp Bizkit dudes, a lot more kids from the inner city and the suburbs of Long Island. It's a completely different culture over there...

One thing I've observed in my experience with non-NYC art schools in the US, both direct and vicarious, is that kids at the non-NYC schools tend to be way more dedicated to their art and are more eager to be quirky and strange. They tend to be a lot more romantic about art, whilst the NYC kids tend to be more cynical and careerist. I think the kids in the non-NYC schools usually have a lot more heart, honestly.

and yes, Paglia does teach there. funnily enough, a lot of students actually lament her class. i dunno, i think its kinda neat.

yeah, the new york scene is one i wanted to steer clear of. i love the city itself, its just that so many people making up the arts community there are so... i don't know... superficial, it's really uncomfortable. while i may diss a lot of kids in this school, at least they wear their hearts on their sleeves when it comes to the art. i appreciate that. the career-mindedness of so amny of the NY artists really doesn't sit right with me. and FIT is a weird school. Knew a girl who is going there. totally not my scene. you're right about the Limp Bizkit kids there. don't really understand what they're going to pick up at a fashion design school, but hey. you never know, they might spit out the next Mark Ecko.

and there is a huge difference between the indie and emo scene. frankly, the emo scene is too painfully and childishly sencere and non-aware of irony to really get my juices flowing, but i do pick up the occasional album. Got the new Saves the Day and Thursday over xmas.

Camille Paglia teaching here is the weirdest thing in the world to me. i wanted to take her class next semester but i knew it would kick my ass, thus i went for Medieval Art as my elective. sometimes i wish i hadn't been so afraid of it.

and, to answer utopia, been a vegetarian for coming up on six years now, so i don't eat hot dogs thankfully. and i shower daily, or just about (i'm man enough to tell the truth and say that every once in a while, when i didn't do anything all day, i won't take a shower!). do you know anyone else on the board that's a philly resident?

>>helping to steer the thread in a deviant direction, much to the lament of people who wanna look at our collective mugshots<<

i've seen other folks use philly as their point of origin, but none immediately come to mind. i'm sure a thread in gathering would bring 'em out of the wood work.

good call utopia, i'll ditch this thread and make a new one up front. sorry, everyone, i ramble sometimes without switching threads!

Uh, I know it's got little place in this thread, but my Heavenly/Sleater-Kinney/Pavement AND Get Up Kids/Promise Ring loving ass can't help but want to mention that this is not always the case...

Last weekend I described myself to a friend as not cool enough for the cool kids, but not nerdy enough for the nerdy kids, either. To which I shall have to add not indie enough for the indie kids, but not emo enough for the emo kids, either. If you're indie, it's not cool to be sincere; if you're emo, it's not cool to be ironic...fuck all that noise, as far as I'm concerned.

Ok ok I'm turning the cranky off now. And not posting about what I look like. Dyed red hair and jeans and black boots and band t-shirts, for the most part. Blah blah.

Aaaiggh! How do I do this? THe first time I converted the brackets to greater than/less than signs (< >) like someone suggested on this thread and I just got a red X. So the second time I just tried the brackets for the hell of it. Now what? Help please

try this, using < and > instead of [ and ]:

Obviously, put the http address instead of tony's pic.

Good luck

Actually, HunterWolf, I think that Yahoo Briefcase is one of the sites that won't let you import an image to another site. I've tried before and it never worked. But I could just be incompetent beyond belief.

Don't do it...

Oh... I guess you didn't see the part in Foxy Brown where Pam Grier confronts the head madam of the bordello/crime syndicate with a pickle jar...containing...the *phallus*...of the madam's boyfriend...

You are in a world of trouble, Signore Archive.

I feel a bit inferior in the old tongue department now, after the lingual exhibitionism of Tom and Mordant. But at least I'm not living in fear, like the Lurid Archive. Soundtrack of your dreams tonight by Trent Reznor and Bob Flanagan, mmmmm...
