I find it very interesting that as soon as I start posting in the Magick Forum again, this thread gets bumped up by someone sickened at the thought of this thread. Whatever.

Curious, Irene, why did you only show pm's that supported you? Was I the only one to PM you to argue Mod's case? – fenris23

As far as PMs were concerned, yes you were.

So nobody wants me to say "hey, what happened to the big Rex/Knowledge love-fest?" then? – Haus

Oh, it's happening in one of the "objection" threads. And since I've no intention of troll-feeding, I'll bump up my own thread instead.

Ierne- I'm sorry , but honestly, your criticisms are unfair to people who want to get the most out of Barbelith. You have turned into a "Cop" as oppossed to (as you put it ) a "bitch" You are applying your sense of order to a place that thrives on Chaos...anyone who does not meet your criteria feels the wrath of Ierne it seems. You get booged down by semantics and are unwilling to budge when you think you are right...(see:dizzy or your argument on High/Low magic) – Rex

Rex was kind enough to send me a copy of his Objection Thread post (a segment of which is above) via PM, knowing full well that I am ignoring him and his companion May Tricks. And how fascinating that Rex waited until I began posting on the Magick again to "contribute" his "non-criticism" of me. All too predictable.

Rex, I find it amusing that you mention my Moderation duties after you accuse me of being a "Cop". Moderation has nothing to do with telling other people what or how to post, or imposing "order" on "chaos." It is a duty to facilitate conversation between posters in a particular Forum and ensure that everything happens in an expedient and safe manner. There is no censorship involved in the process, nor should there be. Your implication that I would censor people that disagree with me is ludicrous and ill-founded.

I think there is a difference between "people who want to get the most out of Barbelith" and people who post any old shit in the Magick because it's the Magick and it's a ghetto forum and the freaks won't mind anyway. The four Moderators are responsible for making sure that the content in the Forum is applicable to the subject of the Forum, for the benefit of all those who participate.

I'm very, very tired of May – and now you – painting this painfully pedestrian, unoriginal Disney Villainess caricature that has absolutely nothing to do with who I am and what I post. It so happens that I disagree strongly with the both of you concerning the importance of a dualistic perspective (what you refer to as High/Low magick). Deal with it.

Yes, I'm a Moderator; after serious consideration as to whether or not I should keep the position due to the recent situation (as well as time constraints from having two jobs), I've decided to remain a Moderator because I think the Magick is important place for seekers to share information, and I have enough experience and knowledge on the subject matter to be able to facilitate that sharing of information.

Should be pointed out that moderators can't act alone - everything they do has to get seconded by at least one other moderator (in the case of edits) and two other moderators (in the case of deletions).

This stupid little scuffle is just as bad for the board as any of the Knowledge threads. Seriously.

i'd just like to point out that this is not entirely true. does this thread represent a board-wide sidetracking of the "barbelith project"? is it effecting the quality of the board as a whole?

no. i've just stumbled over this thread, barely read it, but caught the above remark. if this thread disappeared, the "issue" would go with it... which says to me that it's irrelavant. sort of like the conundrumical "Trolling" forums that some folks have suggested. it's not as though noise bleeds from one thread to the other. if a coupe people want a burn through a three page thread slagging on each other, it actually has no baring on any of the other threads. the totality of barbelith is a very strange thing, in that it is different for each user and is formed by the PARTS that that user interacts with. totality from pieces. since barbelith is at least in part an experiment in community engineering, i think it's interesting to consider the idea of something that is or is not "bad for the board."

i mean, the very notion that people ought to "go back to the forums they inhabit" is taking too literaly the metaphor of the board as a place. no one goes anywhere, except when they walk away from the computer. the state of barbelith at any moment is made of people who are in all places at all times. you could "be here" in this thread while simultaneously be "inhabiting" your usual thread. the non-space in conflict with our personal metaphors and ideas about how barbelith COULD be are a major source of community cognitive dissonance. again, i think it's interesting to think about the larger issues that are raised for community-building in virtual space by threads such as this one and the emotional energy that goes into them.

i've just stumbled over this thread, barely read it, but...

Well, thanks for the well informed opinion.

...it (this thread) actually has no baring on any of the other threads.

Maybe not. But when people start saying "I hate it here" it seems that something may have struck a nerve. The fact that a member saw fit to post PRIVATE messages that other members sent hir just doesn't seem right. Ive given my name and address to a couple of people here and would be mad as hell if someone decided to share that info with the entire board. I realise Lerne didn't give out any names but still...the expectation of privacy is something to think about. The whole thing seems even worse because it doesn't appear as though Lerne asked Tom or any of the other moderators for help before starting this thread. I'm not trying to make any kind of judgments about Lerne as a person but the whole thing seems poorly thought out and inappropriate. Even if Mod3 is annoying.

the very notion that people ought to "go back to the forums they inhabit" is taking too literaly the metaphor of the board as a place

Ok. How about everyone goes back to sitting in their wobbly vinyl chairs and click over to the magick/comics/music/headshop/art forum and forget about trying to get the last word here. Myself included.

Oh, look! What a lovely rosy apple...

An aside: should moderators really be using the Ignore function? It seems to me that doing so automatically reduces your ability to moderate effectively.

Murray Hamhandler
19:44 / 16.05.02
Good point, Randy. I suppose you'd still be able to approve the moderation actions of others, but it would alleviate you of the responsibility of directly moderating the posts of those people you ignore. Maybe the Ignore function should be removed from the moderators' toolkits.

Why? It's not like you couldn't turn it off if you're asked to dicker with a post's contents. I mean, there's no guarantee that a moderator is going to read through a post as closely as they should anyway, plonk option or no plonk option. Taking the button away from moderators wouldn't achieve much.

Hi all.

After quite a bit of deliberation on this one, I have chosen to respond to some of the comments directed at me. I do not wish a rehash, I wish to clear a few things up.

So nobody wants me to say "hey, what happened to the big Rex/Knowledge love-fest?" then? - Haus

What?
I have explained myself to death on this one...there ain't no love fest. I don't know Andrew, I don't defend his actions, etc... ( PS- for a while I thought you were knowledge Haus...no offense intended.) Anyways, so now I am a "troll" for speaking out? All I ever asked for concerning knodger was links to his "offensive" posts so I could form my own opinion...yeesh. He took it upon himself to follow up my posts with his adulations...For the record we have never to my knowledge communicated.

and now, back to my friend...

...knowing full well that I am ignoring him and his companion May Tricks. Ierne

Okay...If you say so. I honestly had no clue I was on ignore...thanks for the update.
As for my companion...more name dropping, Ierne? What does May have to do with me in your limited perception? Because we are both members of M.O.B.? Oh wait, don't answer that...Im on ignore! Any problem you have with me, kindly address it to me...I'm sure May and Mod3 and whoever else is on your iggy list will appreciate it, instead of lumping us into the "ANTI IERNE MACHINE"

And how fascinating that Rex waited until I began posting on the Magick again to "contribute" his "non-criticism" of me. All too predictable. - again...Ierne.

Predictable? Have you been following my career? I wish I could say the same, I had NO CLUE you had stopped or started posting in Magick. I stumbled across your post days after it was written, and another day to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth after reading it.

Your implication that I would censor people that disagree with me is ludicrous and ill-founded.- still going strong, Ierne.

Ierne, at which point in my post did I "imply" that? My moderation comment was directed towards you attitude ... not your ability to censor.I was implying that your behavior was not fitting of a moderator IMHO.

I think there is a difference between "people who want to get the most out of Barbelith" and people who post any old shit in the Magick because it's the Magick and it's a ghetto forum and the freaks won't mind anyway

I agree...except for the ghetto forum comment. The Magick forum on Barbelth has been an increedible resouce for me in my ongoing studies. I have yet to find a place like it in cyber land, but now,( thanks Ierne) I am seeking one...any suggestions?

It so happens that I disagree strongly with the both of you concerning the importance of a dualistic perspective (what you refer to as High/Low magick). Deal with it.

Show me where I posted anything on High/Low magick...please.I should have, mind you. I would have easily corrected the lot of you in the fact that high magick/ low magick is not about attitude...it is about altitude The terms were coined to classify the different forms of Magic performed by groups in different geographical locations (i.e. High magic was performed by people of the mountain regions, low by the lowlanders to make crops grow...etc. Sorry wrong forum...but do look it up.) Now you may disagree with me. If you ever happen to see this.

Anyhoo,Irony, sorry we have come to this. I had oodles of respect fpr you, even after your Mod3 fiasco.Sorry your tired of me...I know the feeling.
BTW Disney Vilaness...never crossed my mind.

Mord@nt- I am soooo sorry about all this, thanks for the stern talking to. It took me awhile, as I said to finally reply to this...sorry if I let you down.

Till then...

My bad.

After posting my rant knodger took it upon himself to be cute at my expense. It was irresponsible of me to allow him to place me in bad light. What seemed to be a conversation took place in a period of a couple of minutes and actually lightened the mood.

As for the Dad comment...yeesh.I was apologizing for posting in the wrong spot...and Andrew jumped me.It seemed innocous at the time, and honestly, I didn't even know he was back on the board.

Again, there ain't no lovefest going on.
