Oooh, like the idea of a list of threads you're involved/interested in. But hey, aren't we getting a bit ahead of ourselves here? New Barbelith has only been running for a few days. Why not leave it alone for another week or so, see what people really miss.

As for the review thing, I've been using a second window for a while anyway, since the old review didn't always work for me. 'S not a problem.

I really wish that we were able to see links to poster's personal blogs and websites. I really like just randomly seeing other people's blogs and such, and I miss that option.

I simply do not see why people can't open another window and read in one while typing in the other if they need to see the whole thing in front of them... – Tom

Another idea, which is what I tend to do, is copy & paste the post(s) one wishes to respond to in a text document, using Word, Simpletext, or whatever word processing software is in one's computer. One then types out their response, referring to the B'lith window and refreshing to see if newer posts have answered one's questions or dealt with one's issues. Once that's done one can hit "reply", paste in their response, and post.

Oh, btw, the Conversation and the Policy&Help Forums aren't displaying the three or four most recent threads...

This has been done on purpose, since those forums move very fast.

Personally, I'm finding the board harder to navigate. Not being able to see Today's active topics or see the recent posts of a particular poster (including myself!) means that it takes longer to find the things I am interested in.

Being able to flag threads you are interested in and listing how many new replies there have been to those threads would help a lot.

I certainly miss the buttons that inserted formatting code and while I understand the reasons for removing the ability to easily edit posts I miss that too. I know that being careful will avoid most typos, but it would still be good to be able to correct mistakes say within a 10-30min time limit.

One last thing. Can we have a background? White is too bright.

Being able to jump directly to a higher page in a thread before opening page 1 is a real timesaver.

If it's not a lot of trouble could that same page listing be applied to the forum list page.

I also really miss the "reply to this post" button, to include that post in the edit box. That is more valuable to me than listing the entire topic again, and certainly a better use of bandwidth. Though, it does encourage folks to include text more, which I can see trying to discourage. Still, I liked it.

Just copy and paste the part of the post that you're replying to and stick in in bold type.

Tom thanks for that informative reply. sorry if i was sounding too picky; i don't know if you've posted all those same answers before but as much as i've tried to keep up with all the policy threads etc, there's always a lot of barbelith that slips through the cracks. it's definately key to be getting out all these ideas about how the new board should be functioning.

it seems the core concept you have is 1) having post be well thought out and 2) reducing emotional, reactionary responses. to further this end, you are trying to develop a board mechanic that forces people to be more circumspect. i suppose at this point, we have no idea if this will work. one concern is that as i think we can all agree, creative thought comes from a lack of physical and psychological restrictions, which is why beaurocracy and "writing by commitee" are both death to creativity. on the other hand, rules and structure can force higher creative thought, such as in the case of low-budget problem solving, story structure restraints, or artificial constrains like the sonnet or the governing rules of interactive design.

it is most certainly a difficult razor's edge to be walking. on top of it, your third goal, or the uber-goal, is the development of community, and this is only possible through communication, visibility, and overarching understanding of the groups desires (for the future) and attitude (in the present). how do the board features affect the community building?

let's try to open up a discussion on how we would all like to try to acheive these difficult goals. i wonder if i've even correctly analyzed what the goals are?

How easy/difficult would it be to implement a 'Members currently online' list?

That could, theoretically, help to reduce the amount of noise, the amount of traffic in the Conversation and also the requests for some kind of Barbelith chat room. Have a gander at who's online right now, have a chat with them on MSN or something instead.

the concept of taking conversation to diffuse points outside of barbelith -- does that contradict the community building goals or strengthen them?

19:52 / 28.03.02
Well, I for one would show up as always "on-line", as I have a static connection to the net and never bother logging out, as then I would have to dig up my password to login next. I'm not sure how many other folks do the same, but the "who's on line" feature would be a bit skewed by anyone else who does this.

If people want to chat with folks on-line, an easier implementation of this would be to just put your ICQ or AIM number in your member profile, and let folks have at it from there. No need to drain any more bandwidth from Tom's account than necessary

I too have been a big fan of the "Today's Active Topics" link, basically because I like to see what the action's been when I come online. But I definitely see your point in removing it, Tom.

The "ignore" thing kind of scares me. I'd like to test it out and see how it works, but that would entail ignoring someone.

Overall, though, I like the new look, and though I miss things from the old board, I'm having fun getting acquainted with the New Barbelith.

Speaking about bandwidth...

Loading up the topic in a new window would take up the same amount of bandwidth as having the entire topic below the reply window. This could be remedied by having the REPLY window pop-up as a new window.

We should be able to jump a couiple of pages into a thread from the main forum window instead of actually clicking on the thread name and then clicking on the page to which we want to go. This will save up A LOT of bandwidth.

Also, non-bandwidth-wise, having a non-white background would help as would black letters.

Oh, and having the ability to flag topics would help save bandwidth because we wouldn't need to track down our topics. Imagine not being on the board for a week then trying to find your topic in the Conversation. Can you imagine through how many windows one will have to go before finding one's thread and then finding out that nobody replied? This would cause a HUUUGE waste of bandwidth.

And I still miss the happy faces.

Nevermind.

Oh, and isn't it a waste of bandwidth to open the links in the same window as the Barbelith Underground? Because once you finish reading the link and go back to Barbelith, the thread page is loaded up all over again.

Don't think so. The previous page is held in your computer's memory, so you're not actually connecting with Barbelith unless you choose to refresh it.

I miss the graemlins... but I guess I can learn this html malarkey. Other than that, I'm gonna quit whingeing and see how well everything else works for a while. Then maybe I'll come up with suggestions. (or possibly a folk song). Yes, there's stuff bugging me (but it's not stuff that would have been an issue before I joined here, and I got used to the way THAT was, so...)
So yeah. Silence from me on this topic for a few days, while I explore. But until that point, can I just add that I REALLY like the new colour scheme (hadn't really thought about the borders, but I like the mustard yellow. And the new bar at the top telling you who you are, etc. But- and I know I'm doing what I said I wouldn't, so I'll be brief- I liked seeing everyone's "from" entry beneath their posts. It wasn't something I'd have gone out of my way to find, but it was nice.)

I run my display in quite a high-res (1280x768) so I find half my monitor to be bright white while I'm here. Hard on my poor vampire eyes... Seriously, late at night in a darkend room the background is way too bright. Could we perhaps select our own background colour in our profile or something?

Related to this is font size. It's too small and Ctrl & mousewheel doesn't work on this site. Please let me re-size the font! As an aside... I have the same problem with LOTS of weblogs. We don't all run at 800x600 on a 14" monitor :P. Yes I could change down my monitor res, but changing res for different web sites is a pain in the backside.

Hey how about we put a big 'this site is now owned by AOL' banner on the front page, just to freak Grant Morrison out next time he comes knocking?

What about darkening the white a bit instead of changing it completely? Make it off-white or something.

Do people REALLY hate the white?!

Maybe I should be talking to Cal about ways of skinning the board - ie - allowing you guys to change certain things about the way you individually see it when you've logged in...

I like the white. However allowing user definition would be cool if possible.

Said it elsewhere, will say it again; I think we're gonna need the ability to close/lock/unlock threads at some point. It got used a bit on the old board, particularly with doubled threads - would be handy here, too.

Is there a thread to explain how to do the whole bold, italics bit? I have some URLs I want to post but always used the buttons in the old board so don't know how to put them in now.

btw, what commands do work here? Blockquote doesn't seem to - is my HTML old and rusty?

Also, could moderators rename threads as well as closing and opening them? At the moment if a thread mutates there is not much to do about it...

As mentioned in the Inertia thread by a number of people, a bit more on the profile side would be nice: the "from" and homepage link option would be good...

There's no way to rename threads or edit the summaries at the moment. I will endeavour to persuade Cal that this is a priority fix (along with the moderate user commands)...

One thing I've just noticed. When you send a PM to someone by clicking their name in a thread, once you send the message you get the 'Click here to return' button. Thing is, it doesn't return you to the thread, but your PM inbox. Not a problem as such, but it just seems a bit odd.
