I just bought "Hatful of Hollow" by the Smiths as a gift, but am sneaking in a good few listens... can't... stop...

Embarrasingly enough, today I have mainly been listening to Midnight Star's 'Midas Touch' remixed by, I believe, DJ Hell (well, It's called the 'Hell interface mix' and it's bleepy, electroey, technoey fun). Also been enjoying some early house classics: Todd Terry's 'Bango to the Batmobile', 'A Day in the Life' and Orange/Lemon's 'Dreams of Santa Anna'... throw in the nice remix of David Byrne's 'Fuzzy Freaky' by DJ Food (best thing they've ever done - I'm always going on about it, but no one listens to me...) and 'Red 2' by Dave Clarke (sweet, sweet memories of The Final Frontier and Club UFO) and you've got one happy Runce....

All available on Audiogalaxy.

Racebannon.... I haven't heard them but everyone says they sound similar to bands like Usurp Synapse, Orchid, Reversal Of Man, and Combat Wounded Veteran which I guess means out of control screemo chaos core. Sounds good to me.

I haven't heard any of those bands, but out of control screemo chaos core minus the screemo (most of the vocals are crooned and therefore much more creepy, I think) nicely sums up Racebannon, to be sure.

I mentioned Rachid Taha on page 2 of this thread (because I saw him live), and I'm proud to say that almost six months later I still can't get him off my stereo.

Just picked up his live album and it rocks.

Ierne, would you mind pimping a few songs in specific, either here or in the song pimpin' thread?

I'm curious about him, but I'd like a few helpful hints, to know which songs to jump on first, to get a taste...

I think Made in Medina is the album to go for if you've not heard him before – try these:

Barra Barra (track 1)
Foqt Foqt (track 2)
Verité (track 9)
Garab (track 11)

Avoid tracks 4 and 10 – They're a bit twee.

All of the above are also on Rachid Taha Live except for Verité.

There's only one really bum track on the live album – track 9, Ala Jalkoum. It's a real shame about that tune, because Femi Kuti (who does guest vocal *en anglais*)is another one I can't get off my stereo! Fight to Win is the Kuti album I've been checking.

I've said a lot of nice things about Joan Of Arc here in the past - I think that at their best, they are one of the most "Barbelith" bands in the world. And at their worst, they are pretty unlistenable. Their entire catalog is comprised of uneven records, but Live In Chicago 1999

I bought 'Live in Chicago 1999' just because it was really cheap (the shop had a lot of 2nd hand copies - guess many punters were unimpressed) and I liked the cover, and I remembered somebody (Flux probably) talking about how good it was .. and I really, really like it - I've listened to it pretty much every day since I got back.

Though I can see why their other records could get kind of unlistenable .. this one's held together by big, wonderful songs, but sometimes they get so slow and quiet they almost stop altogether..

Luther Wright and the Wrongs - Rebuild the Wall.

While on tour, this Canadian country band were whiling away the time "countrifying" anyhting that came on the radio. "Another Brick in the Wall" came on, and they were shocked to discover that the entirety of The Wall was in fact an undiscovered country/bluegrass album. So they redid the entire thing, word for word with few exceptions. And it's really great, beyond any novelty level. Their version of Comfortably Numb rocks my ass, and Empty Spaces is terrifying.

Grud, is this thread still running? Am I back? Hmm. Anyway, re: the Stereolab thing I was on, I did get Aluminum Tunes about six months back; pretty good. About to head off south to see them live (perhaps twice, if rumours I hear turn out to be correct), and hopefully that'll put to bed that obsession for a while. Until they decide to put out Switched On Vol.4 or something.

Also rocking my wyrld:
That ... And You Know Us By The Trail of Dead album - a little wanky, yes, kinda like Bill Corgan's version of Daydream Nation. But not as bloated. Worth it just for "Relative Ways".
Also, Midnight Oil's _Capricornia_ is pretty special, as is the Amelie soundtrack, and... umm... Ryan Adams. Gold would be better without the Tina Turner wannabes on it tho'.

Lately, I've really fallen in love with the band Imperial Teen, but I find that it would be really hard for me to describe what I like about them without inadvertantly making them sound boring or ordinary. They are a pop rock band, nearly all of the songs have two or more members of the band singing... most of their songs just knock me over, they are so well-written and well-executed. I especially love when their lyrics take on a more sinister tone, or when they play up their queerness (all of the band members are gay or of ambiguous sexuality, and the band is two men, two women). Their new record, On improves on their previous two records greatly...more subtlety, more harmonizing, more pianos and keyboards. The songs "Our Time", "Sugar", "Baby", "Teacher's Pet" and "Ivanka" are particularly wonderful, right up there with the best from their previous two records - "The Beginning", "Yoo Hoo", "Lipstick", "Open Season", "You're One", "Imperial Teen" and "Waterboy".

I highly recommend checking out On, and then working backwards...

I know I'm lagging a few years behind everyone else, but a mate just copied me "The Shape of Punk to Come" by Refused, and it's very pretty indeed. Is their other stuff as good?

And are DrowningMan as good as they're cracked up to be?

I'm not very bright in the ways of music, but lately I've been really wrapped up in the Afghan Whigs, especially any cover songs, like their "Miss World" cover.

Yesterday, on the way to work, the local played "Artificial Light" and I found myself obsessing over Rainer Maria again. The only reasonable criticism I've heard is that their vocals are too far underpitch to sound good with the treble heavy guitar work... which I think, from time to time, is what makes it wonderful. At their best moments, they remind me of good Modest Mouse. On average, they turn some wonderful lyrical tricks... mmmm

Dude, that album kicks! One of my cooler managers made me play it when I worked at !ndigo, and I think he did it just to see the look on my face before playing it contrasted with the look on my face 30 seconds later. Just awesome.

My current obsessions are 60s soul (I'm going slowly, so please don't yell at me when I flunk quizzes on Shirley Ellis), and Einstürzende Neubauten. Neubauten have been a small obsession ever since I saw them live, and it just keeps getting more intense. Whether they're playing around with helium or amplifying burning cigarettes, I cannot help but be entertained.

Also: been listening with intense glee to my live recordings of the Rheostatics. Those shows are really like nothing else on this planet- just about every single song they'll do will have a bit of guitar solo or Martin Tielli's voice that turns my stomach upside down and lets the feeling rise up to my throat, through my skull to the top of my head, where it tingles for a second and brings an involuntary grin to my face.
Lastly, tuning in to Finnish radio. (Moving to Finland in the summer; must hear as much of the language as possible.)

REFUSED is really good, but their older stuff is mostly straight forward hardcore with a metal influence. Drowningman I'm not so sure about. I have their first LP on Hydrahead but haven't heard their new stuff which I hear is really amazing and similar to Converge or Dillinger Escape plan. I still play their first one from time to time, it's crushing.

I'm developing a thing for big band swing, Fred Astaire show tunes and stuff of that ilk. I've always liked it, but listening recently to this cheapo Gene Krupa album I've had for a while I suddenly 'got' it, if you see what I mean. It's the purest expression of joy known to man. Even the stoopidly straightforward rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat drum solos make sense now - it's fekking hardcore.

I swear, no sound can beat a big sh*t-load of blaring trumpets for making you want to jump about in a thousand directions at once shouting YESSS! YESSSS!

Kyuss - Welcome to sky valley, it sounds like it was recorded using two cans conected by string in an airaid shelter, it is masterly.
Desert Sesions 7&8 - all kinds of peolpe doing all kinds of things with rock. Includes the classic 'I really miss you since I killed you'. And I managed to get the 10 inch double vinly, obssesion oh yes.

Spiderland - Now on 5th copy lost 2 to girls, trod on 1 while hammered, 1 stolen, 1 rendered unplayable by the spiffing wheeze that someone had to do lines of speed of it. I still have that copy. It is a noble obsession Riz. I now appear to have spelt obsessioan several different ways.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Led Zeppelin.

Yes, mock me now, for I'm only just really beginning to like them. Except for the hobbity bits, they rock.

Damn you, HMV sale. Damn you, lack of willpower. Damn you all.

The Return Of Rothkoid

Thought I'd resurrect the obsession thread, based on some feeling-sorry-for-myself purchases from yesterday. And because I felt guilty about my role as threadkillah.

First things first: they're all Naxos CDs, which means they're a fiver, or that you can get them for 5-for-£20 when HMV have a sale on.

I picked up three the yesterday, and they're pretty earwormish.

Firstly, I must recommend you all go out and buy the Music For Glass Harmonica CD. Yes, it should really be spelled "armonica", which is utterly superb. For starters, you can see exactly where Philip Glass' score for Candyman came from; the sound of the instrument is superb. There's two 20th Century works for the instrument on the disc - well, three, actually - but the sound is just... wonderful. Eerie, like a cross between a pipe-organ and an arrowed angel.

Secondly, the Japanese Orchestral Favourites disc is great - the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra play a selection of popular Japanese compositions; there's a fair bit of orchestrated kabuki stomp here that makes the disc worthwhile. Lots of Takemitsu-esque tunes, but enough strangeness to keep you listening.

Thirdly, I grabbed the new-ish recording of Mahler's 10th as arranged by Wheeler. Admittedly, there's a couple of arrangements, so I felt OK about choosing this one - the Rattle-conducted version was £16 quid! - but this seems quite close to the composer's 6th in terms of evilness and general dark bastardry. Which makes it a pretty apt choice at the moment. Martial moments and big string sections make Rothkoid a happy boy.

i just wanted to second the Led Zeppelin bit... it's faded now, but right after I saw Lord of the Rings ALL i could listen to was zep. but that might suggest an obvious non-diversion to the hobbity bits... but i definately kept thinking the music would have been perfect if they played Ramble On during all those big trek through the mountain shots, and i hope someday the zeppelin fan edit surfaces...

I am with Suds here. Pop music is where it's at and I'm trawling second hand shops for old 100% Hits compilations. I'm esp. obsessed w/ Britney's Slave 4 U and Janet Jackson's 'bet you think this song is about you' number, whatever that's called.

Yes! Pop! Especially hip-hop flavoured r'n'b pop... I'm obsessed with the Ms Dynamite single, 'It Takes More', at the moment, as well as Tweet's 'Oops (Oh My)' - must we fling this pop filth at our kids? Oh, and the Ja Rule one that goes "I'm not always there when you call, but I'm always on time..."
