I tend to go through phases of musical listening/purchasing in which I develop a nearly academic interest/obsession with either a certain musical sound/movement, or a specific artist. I'm curious what some of you are obessing over at the moment.

A recurring interest of mine this year has been odd early crossbreeding between disco/r+b and punk/postpunk...this was prompted by getting heavily into the band ESG, and getting the Disco Not Disco compilation (which I both *highly* recommend), which segued into interest in punk/post punk from NYC in the late 70s/early 80s and the present, which is like an echo of a lot of those sounds displaced by a few decades.

Right now, I've rediscovered the Nation of Ulysses. I had both albums for the longest time now, but mostly just ignored them til last week when I randomly pulled them out, and realized -holy shit!- those are two incredible records. I think that when I first got them about three years ago, I wasn't in the right state of mind to appreciate them...I was into the Make-Up, and Nation of Ulysses struck me as being nonmelodic hollering that I interpreted as "ah, this is before they learned to write tunes". That may be true, but there's a lot of brilliant things going on lyrically on the albums, and musically as well. Recommended.

Female singer/songwriters. I finally woke up to the extent to which I've been conditioned by the relentlessly phallocentric music press to dismiss hundreds of talented artists as "chick music"... Oh, and I was too young and scared to appreciate riot grrrl at the time, so I'm making up for that now as well...

This is as good of a place as any to pass along this bit of really wonderful news:

from the Dischord site:
quote: After spending the winter in the studio, Fugazi have announced two releases due out in the fall of
2001: a 10 song album called "The Argument" (CD/LP) and a 3 song single, "Furniture + 2" (Cd
single/7"). Fugazi toured part of the western US in April,(the "Four Corners" tour), and parts of the
US leading to Western Canada in June and July, 2001. They are also playing their traditional summer
free show at Fort Reno Park in DC on Monday, August 13th. Fort Reno is near the Tenleytown
metro stop in upper northwest DC and has free live bands playing all summer long on Monday and
Thursday evenings.

It has been far too long since End Hits came out. Yes!

What 'chicks' have you been listening to?

I was just talking to one of my roommates last night about how we both agree that women often make better punk music than men do, particularly in how they sing it. God bless Ari Up and Corin Tucker and Kim Gordon and Kathleen Hanna and Nikki from Huggy Bear etc, etc....

Le Tigre (+Bikini Kill), Cat Power, Ani DiFranco, Liz Phair, Free Kitty, The Breeders, Bratmobile, Sleater Kinney... okay, so admittedly most of these on the same compilation tape made by a Barbelith posta deluxe, but it's a start, and has moved me to seek out some albums. [Your Name Here]'s CD has some good stuff on as well, such as Dar Williams, whom I'd never heard of before...

Also rediscovering Kenickie. That first album has some great stuff on it. Where did it all go wrong?

Flyboy...I'd highly recommend these records to you, given what you've listed:

The Slits Cut
Liliput/Kleenex kleenex wonder girl
ESG A South Bronx Story
Young Marble Giants Colossal Youth
Julie Ruin (aka Kathleen Hanna...most people don't have that record for some reason...it's the missing between Le Tigre and Bikini Kill)
Slant 6 Soda Pop Rip Off
Helium The Dirt of Luck, The Magic City, Pirate Prude
BIS The New Transistor Heroes
Solex Pick Up, Vs. The Hitmeister
Moonshake Eva Luna

don't they play a free gig in dc every year, though? i missed last year's (at the smithsonian festival of folk life) coz i had to catch the train to the house of hadalis...

my latest big thing is disco (again). salsoul, rose royce, brides of funkenstein...awww yeah. (hah. just typoed "fuckenstein". i'm too hot and i need food)

this morning i was playing a lot of pavement and mazzy star; last night it was weird electronica, courtesy of some warp bands.

those are pretty much my things at the moment, but i haven't bought any records for ages. today i was trying to find a cd by some "vodou jazz" band that were playing on the south bank, or else some klezmer. couldn't find nuttin'. >sigh<

Yeah, that free gig in Tenleytown is an annual thing that they've been doing for about a decade. I've never seen it myself...when I lived in DC, I moved there three days after they did it, and moved a month before it the next year. Last year's show was rained out after a couple songs, so you didn't miss much.

PS: I already mentioned the Disco Not Disco comp...do you have that? If not, go get it! Seriously. Go get it, you'll love it, if just for Loose Joints "Tell You (Today)".

My Sonic Yotuh obsession has been pretty intense in recent months, but I think it's on the wane now because I've run out of records by them.. (but then Action Records has about 8 that I've never heard of, so the second wave might be on it's way).

During the last month I was at Uni., I was literally addicted to Pavement - I couldn't get up in the morning without listening to at least 3 songs, and they were on my walkman constantly.

Current fascinations:

Well I bought 'Call the Doctor' by Sleater Kinney for £5 and it's getting played lots and lots and lots.. and gets better every time.

Deltron 3030 is also on heavy repeat.

(Oh, and Flyboy, if you're missing Kenickie (and who isn't?) check out Angelica's mini-album 'The End of a Beautiful Career'. It's unapologetically indie-pop, but it's got all the best bits of Kenickie and subject matter that covers eye-gouging, Mary Queen of Scots, dead kittens, sea shantys and scary pagan-magic overtones.. absolutely top.)

Current musical fascinations:

The Dukes of Hang-gliding - gloriously mellow acoustic songs with dark lyrics.

Snow Patrol - Songs for Polar Bears -
Quirky, a bit like an irish pavement only better, keep meaning to buy the new album, very good live too.

Looking for stuff by a local Manchester Band called 'Hooker' saw them live a few weeks ago. Very interested in how they sound recorded. Sort of P J Harveyesque at times.

Been listening to Whipping Boy quite a bit of late as well...

Currently listening to my old Babes in Toyland stuff at the moment. Angry, Bitchy and loud - lovely.

Call The Doctor is indeed a good album, I especially love "Anonymous" and "My Stuff"...
Back in 98, when I was dealing with a horrible break up while commuting three-to-four hours daily and depressed beyond all belief, Sleater-Kinney's The Hot Rock was my obsession....I would listen to it at least twice daily, totally absorbed in the lyrics and music. It remains one of my all time favorite albums, certainly the best of Sleater-Kinney's catalog...they haven't done anything quite as interesting musically or thematically since, I don't think. Songs like "Hot Rock" "One Song For You", "Start Together", "Burn, Don't Freeze!", "Quarter To Three"....they hit me where it hurts every single time.

Every time I hear the music in "Hot Rock" tense up before bursting into
"it's not real...you don't need to tell me that it's not real", I just want to wince or cry.

No Idea. The last album of theirs I got had a picture of a cheesegrater on the cover (very good, but Heartworm still better) and the sleave notes are very vague and makes it sound as though they've split.

Uncle Retrospective might know.... he twisted my arm and made me buy Hearworm once... s'pose I better say thank you for that and Puressence....

i have a long history of "just missing" their free show every year. but this time i'm only a 5.5 hr drive away rather than an 8+ plane ride away. i don't even know why i want so badly to see fugazi "free" since every time i have seen them it's been 5-7$ (close enuff to free in my book and always appreciated)...i think it's cause i want to see how ian mckay reacts to rowdies without the "i'll kick you out of here and refund your money" schtick to fall back on.

That would be RAM I suppose? The Hiatian Vodou punk band that played the South Bank a few weeks ago, which I only found out about the day afterwards. There was a small article in Hot Tickets about a month ago that described them as "what The Clash would have sounded like if they'd discovered Vodou and hypnotic drum rhythms".

I'm also attempting to track down their CD, will keep you informed if I have any luck finding it.

Haven't been as organised as listening to a scene but I've just been through one of my periodic Pet Shop Boys phases, due to my discovery that the old albums have been rereleased with bonus discs and interview booklets (I'm a sucker for that sort of thing). Otherwise my world is being rocked by Fridge and DJ Spooky though not at the same time.

You know, I've seen Fugazi five times since 95, and I've never seen something like that happen. I guess I've been in the well behaved Fugazi crowds.

To anyone reading this: never hesitate to see Fugazi live. They are one of the best live bands out there, they never fail to deliver.

That, and they nearly always play "Reclamation" and "Floating Boy" and "Target"...isn't that enough?

She's in CryCryCry (the fireman song on my tape).

Mortal City is her best album, I think. Although her best track is the first one I heard, a live performance of The Great Unknown on the Postcrypt compilation from 1800PrimeCD (the number is the name, and the URL, too).
"This is a song about nuclear waste, and it's also about my family."
Everyone laughs. Then she goes and does it...

lyrics are here: http://www.poplyrics.net/waiguo/darwilliams/018.htm
quote:I'm no ordinary princess, I was born in the cold war,
And my team is the Rockets.
Go team, it's a dangerous time.
And I dream of the moon and building lunar clone colonies.
And I build my peace with strength, that's the best weapon you've got.
Oh, I am the brainchild, I am the mortar,
With a plastic trophy and an eating disorder,
And vision as big as a great big wall,
And they tell me that I'll move forward for the good of us all,
And the good of nuclear families all.

Lately, I'm fascinated by cool jazz. I heard a thing on NPR about George Mraz's new album -- jazz arrangements of Moravian folk songs. I want that.

lucky you! he may not even do this anymore but from 90-94 i saw them three times, twice in honolulu and once in san antonio, and he threatened the crowd each time. the only time i ever witnessed him actually handing over 7$ and having the bouncers escort someone out was in honolulu round about 94. i always respected him for the concept and follow through but it got tiresome and preachy after awhile. i guess that must be why the 94 show was the last one i made an effort to attend...i mean how can he top that?

the free show in dc sounds like a perfect way to reintroduce myself to their live performances after sooo long..."hey, ho...it's off to DC i go..."

And Now For Something Completely Different...

I've been digging North African Music recently. I picked up Natacha Atlas' new album last Friday and it's kicking my ass. She does a wicked Moroccan-stylee version of I Put A Spell On You.

Two weeks ago I saw this Algerian musician named Rachid Taha...blew my mind. He had a full band (guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion) and the music was fierce – rock 'n' roll with flourishes of rai. Supposedly he plays arenas in Europe, but I saw him in a dark sweaty Greenwich Village pit and...WOW!

When I saw them last month in Green Bay, Ian pulled a huge Asian kid out of the audience and put him behind the 2nd drumkit. The kid didn't get the "yo, keep cool" hint & kept throbbing back & forth within (I kid you not) millimeters of Ian while he was doing solos. I don't know about you, but I would've decked the kid 10 times over if somebody did that kind of ignorant shit while I was trying to put on a show.

To anyone reading this: never hesitate to see Fugazi live.

Damn straight! Towards the end of the gig (which lasted over 2 hours), guitarist Guy Picciotto said he wouldn't reccomend the topical creme/lacquer Skin-On because he put some on and his fingertips are bleeding again. Man, playing for 2 hours with bleeding fingertips for $6 a ticket. Now that's integrity!!!

Wow. Do you remember what they played that night? Any new songs? The last time I saw them, waaay back in Dec 99, they were playing two new ones, "oh" and "the argument" and I was really impressed by them. Man, I hope that the next time I see them, whenever that is, they pull out "Cassavetes"...I saw them do that one at my first Fugazi show, and it still knocks me out. I could always do to hear "Floating Boy" and "Do You Like Me"...I've never seen "And The Same", "Caustic Acrostic", or "Reprovisional", I'd love to witness those someday too.

I've been getting into heavy metal a lot lately; I think it was the offer to start a metal band with two of my friends. Venom has been on my record player more than usual, I got this Death tape for free and have listened to it a lot, same thing with Slayer (I got Undisputed Attitude on tape, which is Slayer covering a bunch of punk rock songs, and Reign In Blood on cd which is fucking incredible), I borrowed Master of Puppets from a buddy and have been listening to that a lot and the next cd I plan on purchasing is Speak English Or Die by S.O.D. although I already have Live at Budakon by them. Before this it was psychobilly, but I lent out both my Demented Are Go and my good Meteors cds, but I still have my 3 cd psychobilly set. And I've had this odd obsession with Springsteen for quite some time. And I'm still not over being obsessed with Shellac's new album.

Anything from this decade is new to me.

Until I was fourteen, the only music I listened to voluntarily was classical. At that point I was introduced to blues, and from there to Hendrix and Zeppelin, to Johnny Winter and to various jazz artists. For a while I was big into Queen. I don't know where that came from.

Lately, I've grown fascinated with hip-hop/rap. It's got some cool stuff. I dig Outkast and even, to my horror, Afro Man.

If you like early music and jazz, I've been listening to a vocal quartet (The Hilliard Ensemble) and a faanntastic saxophonist (Jan Garbarek) doing some 15th & 16th century motets together. The polyphony with the improvised sax descant ascending over the top - recorded in a monastery - is guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck rise.

Japanese pop music: due to a roommate who travels yonder yearly.

Rainer Maria: a wonderful band from Madison, WI. Listening to them sort of made me get into this idea that music is regional, at least/epecially within america. Poepl from different areas will use different metaphors and have different themes... prolly not explicityly true, but it seems to be working for indie and folk music. Boston and Chicago certainly implicate their origins

Gustav Mahler and Hector Berlioz: my introduction to dead white men with symphonies. Basicallly devoured these folks due to a programmer firend having a trunkful of cds...

And I've always been into chick-rock and would have loved to be in on that conversation Flyboy had, just to smile and nod.
