Dug up every cliche they could find, didn't they? Ugh. I don't remember squirming so much at the dialogue before now. It just felt stiff and stilted and annoyingly melodramatic. And if I see one more half-ass writer add "y" to a noun to make it a "hip" adjective I'm going to bean them with a sledgehammer. "avoidy"? "magicky"? And wasn't it quaint that Buffy came back and they resolved it in such a neatly anti-climactic ending? Awww. <retches> Where's the extended, solidly written storylines I used to know?

Terrible start.

man, I had a few people watching that had never seen it before and they were like, "THIS is the crap you're always talking about???" and, you know, I had to agree.

Yeah but you gotta admit the part with the monster gift to gilles was fucking hillarious!!! I just wished they would have held off a few eps before bringing Buff back. It wasnt the best but im going to chalk that up to everyone being on edge baout how its going to work out with the new network.

And seeing as how a slayer died, shouldnt there be another slayer in town soon or does Faith cancel that out???

Faith cancels that out. There won't be another Slayer called until she buys the farm.

Says who?! I don't remember that being part of the mythos. That would kind of imply that Faith's the 'real' slayer, and Buffy's like, the leftover Golden Age Slayer, or something.

Yeah. That's the case. From the mouth of Joss: when a new Slayer is called, that's where the lineage goes. Buffy being the less "proper" Slayer than Faith is also quite important in terms of some of the show's ideas/themes, IMHO...

So does that put the kibosh on my (high) concept for a Buffy novel, then? You know, the 'One Girl In All The World' idea?

Generally speaking, I liked it. I especially liked how they didn't do the old "it looked like she died but really didn't and here's how it was done" trick that's resurrected many a supervillain in the comics.

I'll admit that the show was rather heavy, lacking its usual characteristic wit, but considering what Buffy's been through, that's understandable.

To sum up, I enjoyed watching it, but I wouldn't use it as an introduction to the show for someone who hasn't seen it before.

I just wanna know why it wasn't wide-screened like Angel.

Mmmmm, love the widescreen.

I dunno, having just seen the second episode of the new season, I don't know how they're going to come back from this. I mean, how the hell (no pun intended) is anyone going to be happy in this show? I know they rarely keep characters on Buffy happy for long, but the group dynamic is well and truly fucked I think.

That, and whose idea was it to put Willow in that ridiculous red fuzzy top?

I agree. No more tops for Willow!

I like the little bit at the end of the second episode (cause I had figured it out) but you're right... this is gonna be hell for her and our fun loving Buffy is gone!

Yes but the real question is how much Spike?

So, did anyone else notice the fanboy bone that got thrown us in the recent episode of Angel. That's right. All you who taped it go back and watch the part where the old man is saying his little spell. The last word he says is "Kimota". Yup, you heard it here first. Joss Whedon, or whoever wrote that episode, has some good taste.

So, i have a questions for you---if the slayer was found, and giles is her watcher, what the fuck are all the other watchers for???

Captain Zoom

For training other watchers, and for looking after candidates for slayerhood. For more info, and some great Spike and Dru evil stuff, read "Spike and Dru: Pretty Maids all in a Row". It's a great book, set at the opening of WW2. All sorts of background info on the watcher's council.

I loved how Giles reacted to Willow when he got back..that was great. Im waiting to see more of Giles and his magicky past...

Yeah, and foreshadowing much there? Willow threatening Giles, almost? "I'm not one of the bad guys" ? They're laying it on kinda thick.

And then we have the sweeps week musical episode to look forward to. Any predictions?

Indeed, and over on the spoiler boards, it's been speculated that the "Willow-gonna-go-evil?" foreshadowing is a big red herring: standard operating procedure for a Buffy series would be to hint at one Big Bad and then pull a bait-and-switch two thirds of the way through...

I predict that the show will continue in its noble tradition of fanficcing itself...

Does anyone think Buffy and Spike are really gonna hook up, speaking of which?

This has been one of my fave developments in the show over the last few years. Not the Buffy-Spike angle, but Spike's whole redemption. Logically he is still having all the urges a vampire would have, but seems to have been able to surpress them with greater ease over time. My wife and I once speculated that there was no chip. Spike's condition was a result of deep-seated hypnotism to convince him he couldn't harm living creatures. In last season's finale, the little creepy demon guy says there's no smell of a soul around Spike, but I begin to wonder if he's developing one. I wonder if they'll ever pursue this or if it's just given that he's good now.

What if Spike's chip was removed? Would he harbour resentment towards Buffy in the same way that Angel did when he became Angelus?

Who thought that a teen TV series could prove to be so fascinating?

I'm still curious about the musical. Will it be kinda Andrew Lloyd Webber, will it be kinda Sondheim, or (God I hope not)Rogers and Hammerstein...

I can't believe I'm the first to post about the recent episodes, and 2 days late at that.

Is it just me or does Buffy seem to be returning to it's high-schooler roots. Bringing back Johnathon, focussing an episode on teenage vampires, it all just seems a little "first season" to me. Last season just seemed like a much more mature (not adult, just better-defined) story. I mean, the Joyce's Death episode was incredible, but what have we seen thus far? And, if we can all be honest with ourselves, Willow's the big baddie for the season, isn't she? Isn't she?

ON to Angel, and some stellar acting from (arrgh, name escapes) Wesley. I'm confused now by the ending. I thought "Billy" was going to be the baddie this season. Maybe it'll finally come down to Wolfram and Hart.

Just watched a music video from next week's musical Buffy episode.

Holy fucking hilarious.

I think they're getting back to the high school roots cause if they focused on the Buffy ripped out of heaven Willow slowly turning bad-guy side of things, it would be a titanic mopefest.

I'm getting pretty damned sick of Dawn, though. I'm having a real hard time caring what happens to her character.

I hate Dawn but lets talk about Willow now... I really really like her and I was watching a early episode this weekend and I love how much She's developed! She went from Willow (an ugly lonely little tree) to Will (strength) and I like it. I see nothing wrong with her blatant (Chaotic) use of magic. Terra needs to get bitched slapped (or, heh, mindwhiped). I mean, Willow can do much better (what about the rat girl? She can bring back the dead but she can't turn a rat into a girl???) Anyway, if she does go over to the darkside (which would suck) I hope they don't kill her or depower her that would be retarded (literaly)... I had a point

Musical tonight

RE: Spike... now I've got the whole fourth series on video, and there's no moment where he's stretchered off to graft a chip to his brain. And the first few scenes where he tries to hit people aren't played as they are later on... he seems to have little problem escaping the Initiative. Equally, the doctor who 'tries' to remove it in the fifth season... how hard does he try? Or does he know there's no chip in the first place?

I'm with the 'No Chip' brigade.

Captain Zoom

That doctor was from the initiative, right?

I suppose there's the no chip school of thought and the didn't want tobe the first person drained when spike was free school of thought.

I think they just wanted to keep Spike around as a main character, and if he was evil, it was only a matter of time until Buffy staked him.

I really do think they've got to deal with it though. Especially in light of last season's heartfelt declaration (You treat me like a man...), and Spike and Buffy's deepening relationship this season.

Can't wait to see if Mr. Marster's can sing.

I'll be watching the tape of that every night for a month. I'm in total valley girl mode: "Oh. My. God."

Normally when I watch such things I'm embarassed on behalf of those involved, but not this time.

God DAMN it! Buffy's been pre-empted for a hockey game! I won't get to see the musical until Saturday!

Stupid Flyers.

OK, after reading through the thread, I think I can safely assume that the Trio will not be the main villains for this season (thank God), but perhaps will act as the agents that bring the next Big Bad to Sunnydale. Here's hoping, anyway. I can't take a whole season of these guys.

I'm seeing parallels between Buffy and Willow this season, with both using crutches to deal with the world (Buffy depending on Giles to act as a parent figure, Willow depending on her magic for . . . well, everything), and sooner or later these crutches are going to be kicked out fom under them. Giles, after all, is showing signs of having to leave, and as for Willow, well, somebody made those rules for the proper use of magic, and I'd assume that said somebody was capable of enforcing them.

Barring that, don't forget that she still has that standing offer from the demon that offered her Anya's old job.

This is all, of course, idle speculation. I've long since learned the folly of trying to second-guess Joss Whedon's twisted little mind.

You know I don't think Spike has a chip in his head and if he does it's been inactive since the university-secret-ghostbusters-squad got shut down...he roughed up Xander in the first episode (or was it the second?) and he attacked funeral attendants during his song and dance number! I mean, if he actually stopped to question the chip... he'd probably realize that it doesn't work!

Mazarine

See, I think I remember Spike wincing when he grabbed Xander, and he was really attacking the chairs at the funeral.

Y'all are so nice not to spoil too much, living as I do in a UPN-free zone.

What's more curious to me than the chip thing is that the sun shone on Spike at the end of last season, and he was pretty much out in it early in this one, offering a lame excuse as to why it was okay.
