Anybody in a green and purple suit is a super villain.

You know, It does tie everything together nicely. Or, "I'm Emma. Emma. Charles, No!" Whatever.

Why's the story more powerful if Charles doesn't come back? I can imagine a very powerful storyline where he returns. And the idea that Grant would dispose of Charles Xavier, before actually doing anything with him, is ridiculous. I don't think Cassandra is Xavier's twin sister (at least, not in the normal sense of the word). I'm not sure what the relationship is, but I am sure it's complicated. Cassandra is Charles' new arch nemesis, but she is also "the great lover". Charles will have to deal with her: their relationship has yet to be defined/resolved and Charles will be there when it is.

Well, I suppose you may be right.

There's a part of me that thinks that offing one of the main characters in the sneakiest possible way three issues into his run would be a very bold thing to do, and likes that.

That and killing Magneto, the main villain of 40 or so years, in the most unceremonious way thinkable...

Somebody mentioned that Cassie Nova might be Chuck's twin. Well, consider that she is held in a prison intended for Chuck's half-brother...

I am surprised more people were not shocked (SHOCKED!) by the Prof shooting Cassie. That really struck me, it is pretty rare for him to get his hands dirty like that.

What is this X-Corp stuff?

Yeah, Magneto's death was kinda funny. It was so....irreverent. And the great thing is, he'll probably remain dead for the duration of Grant's run (his death being symbolic of the death of the old and the ushering in of the new). And then some twat'll start on the title and resurrect him, but that'll be okay because now we have "super consistency" and can understand the changeover to the new writer as a "jump" from one quantum eigenstate to another, etc. blah......

Oh, and I've only just noticed: evil shadow clenching its fist around Jean, making her go "Auuuuu".

And Ellis asks:

quote: But what happened to the giant Sentinel??

Well, the Mothra and Godzilla "Mega Sentinel Jets" appear to be inactive now that they've fulfilled their purpose.

"....For fear of activating the two remaining robot monsters, both currently dormant......"

"...No one has claimed responsibility, and the sentinels are of an unknown unmarked design..."

And finally: I love the little chat between Cyk and Phoenix. A lesser writer would have Scott, fists clenched, tears streaming from his eyes, shouting - jagged speech bubble stylee - about how he,

"...can't stand it! Noooo! My mind, tis aflame!"

etc.

Grant goes for the subtle approach. The frozen, traumatised individual unable to convey his feelings; seriously involved in the process of renegotiating his life/beliefs. He's aware that he can depend only on himself - 100% alone, inspite of the "bond that will never break" between his wife and himself.

Fab.

Well, at least Grant was kind enough to kill Magneto off-panel, so that some half-assed writer can come in and say 'oh, but he managed to fight off the sentinels even in his feeble state'...

Well, it was surprising, but not shocking... Xavier has done this sort of thing before (I remember him killing the Morlock leader with his bare hands years ago, and wiping Magneto's brain).

X-Corp is something from the annual.

Nice, Cam. How are you on "cinematic"?

And are you in a position to hassle Grant if Frank quits?

I mean, how did you get your stint on the Invisibles? Did you beg and stuff?

It was Donald Trask's DNA, which was what made the Sentinels believe she was also a Trask.

Cameron: I love your drawings. I concur: whore yourself to Quesada. whore yourself to Quesada. whore yourself to Quesada.

Okay, rereading the issues, I found something that I couldn't believe that I missed, and that no one here has mentioned:

In issue 114, after Cassandra psychically attacks Charles, he's muttering in Jean's arms "Are these words from the future?"

What do you think THAT is all about?

Ellis

I thought he simply meant that Cassandra WAS the future of the human race.

I don't know...FROM the future? It's a semantics thing, I guess. I think it's a really interesting line either which way.

I like the thought of words from the future...

Doesn't quite work: she injects herself after she first talks to the Sentinels and they identify her as a Trask...

It's pretty obvious that we don't have the full story on Cassandra Nova yet.

Re the "words from the future" thing

It's quite possible that there's some sort of time breach occuring; this is a Morrison comic after all. Let's wait and see. Can't believe it took you so long to notice it, though. WHY AREN'T YOU MORE OBSSESSIVE?!?!?
And what about in the latest issue when Jean (who is clearly in an altered state, courtesy of Ms. Nova) starts rambling,

"...Charles... Don't go... You musn't...."?

Go where? Is she warning him against following Cassandra? If so, why? In her fucked up state is she getting a glimpse of what's going to happen?

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced Flyboy's right about the mind swap thing. If we are to assume that "Cassandra's" funny "Nuuuuuuuu...." actually means something, and that "she's" trying to convey real information, then there's every reason to attempt to impose sense upon ALL her ramblings. And its not too hard to impose "Emma" on "Umma" and "I'm" on "Ummmm" especially in this context: in terms of both phrasing ("Emma, I'm Charles. Nooooooo...." makes sense) and situation (Emma has just broken his/her neck).

I see only one flaw with the mind swap theory. . . even if he was paralyzed, couldn’t Professor X have identified himself with his mind rather than with his mouth?

Jamieon
17:12 / 28.08.01
Maybe he was in shock (after all, he's just had his neck broken and his mind swapped with someone else). Maybe Grant just didn't think of it...... etc. I don't really think that's much of a "flaw", Mr. Duck.

I agree with runt. Suddenly finding yourself in someone else's body has got to be disorienting. And with little time to spare (may be he saw the gun) He tried to just speak his warning, instead of taking the time to form the thought, then project it.

It's not that big a jump.

Question: I need to reread the three issues, but did we ever get a good reason for Charles to be carring a gun? Or was it just something he side stepped when Jean asked him?

Regrettable Juvenilia
20:19 / 28.08.01
I think he mainly has it for the reason he told Jean, especially since he did go bugfuck evil once already (Onslaught, if you care). And because it's happened once already, I don't think Grant will be doing it. I also think that having Xavier come out as a mutant and abandon the whole secret identity business is an important part of Grant's plans for the comic, and so he won't render it meaningless by having this not really be the Prof.

On the other hand, re-reading part 1, Cass Nova does say "I'll be you now and make you a murderer", and if this theory is true, she's succeeded...

What actually happened to the Onslaught persona, by the way? Still around? Destroyed so that it can't come back? Or was it 'neutralised' so that it could potentially return at some point in the future with a vendetta against Xavier, it's first, oldest enemy? Just a thought.

This just gets better and better with every issue. Because Xavier didn't just out himself - he outed the X-Men. Repercussions. Oh yes.

Ellis
09:27 / 29.08.01
If I remember correctly, Onslaught turned into pure psionic energy and the Avengers and Fantastic Four had to jump into him to provide him with a physical form which the X Men then destroyed.

As for the X Men being outed:
"What you mean the guy who shoots lasers out of his eyes is a mutant?? And the elf like one who 'BAMF's everywhere? And the furry blue thing?? I would never have guessed!"

(Has Xavier ever publicly admitted that he has links with the X Men?)

Yeah, I've thought of this too, and it's the only thing stopping me believing 100% in the mind swap theory. But I still view it as a strong possibility. God, I really want to know what the relationship between Xavier and Nova is! Aaaaargghgh.

I got it a bit late, but still, this issue rocked - I second all the things everyone else has said.

I love the FLyboy mind-swap theory.
Definate shades of 'a little splinter of Quimper' in Invisibles Volume 2. Maybe they haven't swapped minds completely, but the only plausible way for Nova to survive (and we've established that she does) is if she made the jump and lodged herself somewhere in Xaviers head..

My problem with the issue though - and I expect this to start some kind of limited argument at least - is THE COVER.

Maybe I'm still too much of a Vertigo partisan, but .. bleurgh. It's just not the sort of thing I want to see on the front of a Grant Morrison book.

The whole shop window dummy body, kissy face, airbrushed spherical tits, obvious male gaze thing. All my efforts to convince people comics are cool and worth reading will be as nowt if I leave this one hanging around.

I had the same problem, I felt I should have put the comic in a brown paper bag.
Plus the cover art is shit. It's badly drawn and thoes balls arn't sexy at all. I've read the arguements about her looking like lil' Kim or something but all it looks like to me is comic geek wankery.

Although I find the Nova-Xavier mindswap worryingly possible, my only question is 'why?'. As Nova she has a shitload of powers, including useful tricks like a regeneration power that makes Wolverine's look tardy. She's supposedly to mutants what mutants are to humans. Why would she trade down to get Xavier's psychic powers? It's the equivelent of a mutant becoming human. And she almost got Charles without Cerebra, why would she need it to get him?

I think what was meant was that Xavier outed Scott Summers, Jean Grey, and all the other prominent staff at the Institute, along with every potential student. There was never a concrete link in the public's eye between the Institute and the X-Men. Until now, of course.
