As I mentioned in the "Coming Soon" thread, a friend who works at Fox just told me that a friend of his who works for WB saw the movie and said, in shock & awe: "THE DARK KNIGHT is the best movie Warner Bros. has come out with in the last 10 years." And the guy who said that isn't even a big superhero fan.

And now I see that Rolling Stone has given the film high praise in an advance, no-spoiler review.

I figured it was time for this movie to have its own thread, as it hits theaters in a few weeks.

Very much looking forward to it. Sounds like the crew behind Batman Begins might outdo themselves... even the dialogue in the trailers, practically every line, is pretty brilliant, shedding new light on the character while still remaining totally faithful to all that makes the character & his world work.

And I just had to add this very fun interview with Christian Bale, to start this thread off with a little meat (never fear, veteran Lithers who remember the days when I was link-crazed, this is a one-shot deal)... really enjoyed this NON-SPOILER interview.

Bale on 'the one entertainment Bruce Wayne has in his life.'

AICN also has a very positive review

Not reading any of these in detail

"It's enough to watch Bale chillingly render Batman as a lost warrior, evoking Al Pacino in The Godfather II in his delusion and desolation. It's enough to see Ledger conjure up the anarchy of the Sex Pistols and A Clockwork Orange as he creates a Joker for the ages… The haunting and visionary Dark Knight soars on the wings of untamed imagination."

If this film has half as good as this hyperbole-tinged review says it is it'll be the best Batman film ever.

thanks, Finder, i was frustrated the previous thread never got reopened after the speculation on Ledger's death.

i envy the Rolling Stone reporter so much it's ugly... [and the review contains a minor spoiler, watch out].

july 18th is still. too. far. away.

It is, really, isn't it. And yet it is the first opportunity we will have actually to say what we thought of the film. Unless...

Has anyone here seen a sneak preview? Cube, this could be your moment...

I don't think Cameron Stewart will mind me posting this sketch he did and put up on his facebook account:

ohh, the line for wanton destruction forms on the right, babe... Now that [non-Mac] Heath's back in tooooooownnn!!

is this the same piece, Finder? i love it, there's a Mort Drucker vibe there, like in an unproduced MAD magazine parody.

if not, please post a direct link. i haven't got a Facebook account. =B

i wonder whatever happened to comic movies' comic adaptations. in the case of decades-spanning franchises they made some sense, commercially-wise. or not, as they stopped being produced.

but i digress.

That is indeed the same piece - I hadn't thought of the Mort Drucker thing but now that you mention it, I agree that there's a Drucker vibe there...

Thanks guys! Drucker is one of my favourite artists so that's a real compliment.

However! Again, let's keep this thread on topic, which would be the film itself rather than goofy drawings I did of the characters...

I was quite surprised by this Wired article (location spoilers), which says Nolan shot sections on IMAX stock, and always planned for it to end up there.

Really? IMAX? That's not a gimmick? When I saw it was on there, my first reaction was, you know... It's not Transformers, is it?

Seems like an odd approach to IMAX, using it to display long, static shots, instead of being really really whizz-bang.

Anyone doing it properly?

BAM!

Reviews pouring in to AICN.

Again, haven't properly read 'em, but as far as I can see the hyperbole is universal.

Awesome! Great! So glad we finally have a thread to talk about the film itself! When I saw it at the weekend the crowd just went wild when we found out the Joker's origin. And such a shock to see a brutal re-imagining of the Ridddler in there!

I haven't properly read this thread, but I think it's excellent. As is the film, incidentally, which I saw at Cinéma des Artistes tonight.

Cinemas which let you drink are totally the way forward.

You people across the sea actually already watched? You're pulling my leg, right?

Pulling my leg... The Joker! Aww, it's like a awful riddle. Riddle-errr. Riddler! "Across the sea" -- sea... See? "C". C for Catwoman! Pretty fishy... Where's there a fish there could be a... Pinguim. Penguins are in cold areas. Like Mr Freeze! Where they banned seal clubbing. "Ban". Bane.
(yes, that scene is easily more classic to me than any Frank Miller moment)

On a serious note, I'm ridiculously excited to watch this fucker.

I was about to purchase tickets when the wind blew the notes from my hand and into my neighbour's garden. There is a non-molestation order in place preventing me from asking for them back. Has anyone else had this problem? It seems to be a rather massive oversight on the part of Chris Nolan and Co...

Purchase moles, train them to tunnel them back to you.

But make sure the moles are trust-worthy, or they will just take the tickets and go see the movie themselves.

What with TDK and Wanted being on general release, could this be the summer when The Man finally gets 'it' stuck to him?

Just finished watching the Animatrix-style prequel animations, Gotham Knights. They're about on par with a bad Batman comic- darkness, grime, uninspired fights and My Parents Are Dead. Little is revealed about the film or Film-Batman as a character except for some mostly unnecessary backstory. The animation is on par with a prime-time (in Japan) anime, but frequently very ugly and the interpretations of Batman's costume often worse than the Cyber-Bat look in TDK.
Then there's what they did with Renee... You see, to elicit many a Squee from fanboys (freaks...like me!) they've put in a few Bat-Supporting-Characters that we don't see in the film- namely Killer Croc, Deadshot and Gotham Major Crimes Unit Detectives Crispus Allen and... Anna Ramirez? Were the writers huffing weaponised fear-toxin when somebody explained Gotham Central to them, because one of the few openly gay characters in the DCU is, by astonishing coincidence, the one character who absolutely had to be renamed when she's in front of a mainstream audience.

Won't be watching that, then.

Thanks for manning up, Phex.

FinderWolf
20:31 / 01.07.08
The reason for not using Renee in the new animated stuff, I read in an interview with the makers of that video (I think it was with Greg Rucka, to boot) is that it ties in with the new movie's continuity/version/universe, and the writers didn't want to be bound by what happens with Renee in the comics (also implying that some things may happen to the Renee analog character in THE DARK KNIGHT that fans may not like), so they wanted to be unencumbered by fan reaction. I honestly doubt it has anything to do with Renee's sexuality. It seemed more like a simple plot/fan reaction issue.

Let's get back ontopic, people. Has anyone else read anything about this on the Internet?

Phex: Dorset Doom
21:42 / 01.07.08
Thanks Boboss. Somebody has to stand up to the CRIME and FILTH that is INFECTING my city. MY PARENTS ARE DEAD!

Anyway, looking at the IMDB Cast List there's a Detective Ramirez but no Crispus Allen, so it looks like in the film at least the Detective Ramirez character isn't an analogue for Montoya and I'm guessing that Findy is right on this one. Guess I overreacted. Like the criminal. In the alley. DEAD. BOTH DEAD...

And Haus, here you go.

Has anyone else read anything about this on the Internet?

Well I have, yes. It's all pretty interesting stuff, but the main thing, as far as I'm concerned, about this movie, is that my wife has left me, and the children have been taken into care.

I'm disappointed by the kids in particular - it's not how they were raised.

Wow, I started reading this to see if I could glean any insights with which to pass along to my Batman-obsessed pal, but I can see why the old thread was locked.

Yikes.
