You are about what? 5'9''?

I'm here, also.

Damn you, MCS, and your cross-posting abilities.

16:39 / 12.06.08
I'm around for Film & TV, Random Q&A and the odd Creation thread.

Also lurking more and posting less, but still here. May start a thread tonight.

16:54 / 12.06.08
Still around. Sort of. I expect I'll be posting in Comics again, sooner than later.

I love this place! There are about three or four RL people with whom I share my interests, and here there are dozens. And compared with other boards I frequent, Barbelith is very healthy. It´s a reality that most people lurk, so this board will be hopefully active for a couple years more.
And at the end, we´ll have a contest about who´ll be the last to post before Tom pulls the plug.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
17:07 / 12.06.08
Daytripper! I thought you'd gone off to the East, aboard a breathing boat. Good to see you're still 'round.

I'm here, lurking all areas and popping up now and then to play my part as Barbelith's version of Keigo Asano. At times when I post it can feeling as if I'm doing... something... unpleasant over a cliff, to borrow Haus's phrase, but I'll carry on to the bitter end. The people I've met via this board seldom fall short of awesome, and I'd like to carry on meeting them in this place.

COG
17:26 / 12.06.08
I read most days, poke around in the archives and occasionally post. Mostly in convo as I am not really ready for long, heated debates over anything these days.

Have started reading Comics and it's guiding me in various ways to some new things. Love the Manga and anime stuff. Temple is highly interesting to me though not through any actual practice.

I bravely stamped down on some rampant boy's club sexism on another board which in the past I would just have avoided, so the fiercely defended culture of Barbelith has definitely taught me things.

I have only met a couple of you in the flesh but the place definitely feels homely.

Van Plague?
17:46 / 12.06.08
I lurk, will lurk until there is nothing left to see. Back in the day I lurked because I didn't feel I was smart enough to play, but smart enough to be impressed and edified by the content and people here. I'll be very sad when Barbelith is no longer.

Mug Chum
18:04 / 12.06.08
Still here. Films, comics, games, reading the ocasional switchboard, books or temple thread and lurking The Ancient Threads. And getting the occasional foot-in-mouth, practicing for a future yoga thread in the Temple.

Also, I'm feeling hugely guilty for rarely contributing to the lab. I do science. I do science til it comes out my ears, but unfortunately I've found it very difficult to engage with that part of the board, for a reason I find very difficult to pin down.

I'm the same way with music and the music forum. Weird!

Bastard Tweed

I've been here a few years as something of a post/lurk lycanthrope. I actually only created this account because there was a period of time when the site was a closed book and you couldn't even read threads without being a member. It felt rather like withdrawal so I signed up.

I've always wanted to become more active in the discussions here but seeing as how my workplaces most never involve free-time near a computer so the only time I have access to the internet is at home where I still have only dial-up.

That's right; you heard me: dial-up.

What's more, as I'm American, busy, and in a state of relative penury, I usually come to threads quite some time after they've been initiated and any contribution I could make has already been stated or queried by someone else in a near-enough fashion that my posting would be fairly superfluous. Thats why I got so excited when Stoats mentioned having read The Terror in the Dan Simmons thread because I knew that due to some folks boycotting the author there was a very good chance that I could contribute things to the discussion that wouldn't be otherwise.

Unfortunately it seems we were the only two individuals actually still here that had read the damned thing.

*sigh*

I would also like to say, as someone who actually witnessed something of the heyday for this board, that the signal/noise ratio still seems to be about the same; it's just there's fewer folks talking so it can be hard to notice. I still find insights and discussions here that I would be hard pressed to find elsewhere, they just happen a lot m o r e s l o w w w l l y.

I'm still here, sort of. I log in now and again, maybe once every couple of weeks. A lot of the time I wander around, look at the recently updated threads, then log back out.

A lot of my time is spent posting at Metafilter these days, which has an actively posting userbase of at least four or five thousand, and a hard-core of at least five hundred. There's always something going on there. It's also very heavily (and well) moderated by four exceptional moderaters. There's been a lot of discussion on there recently about sexism, racism and the like, and how to tackle them, which reminded me a lot of what I liked about Barbelith. Smart people sometimes say dumb things, and Metafilter is a good place because a fair majority of the users believe in and argue vociferously for it remaining a 'safe place', where people are challenged on unexamined biases and bullshit.

I'm very sad to see Barbelith gradually deflating. I learned my posting chops on (of all places) Yahoo Groups in the late nineties, and Barbelith was the first place I felt I could write and be understood in an adult, non-hostile and constructive environment. I'll still pop in until one day I'm confronted with an error page.

Or until the Great Barbelith Renaissance of 2009. Lo, I have seen it, and it's herald shall be open registration and vigorous moderation.

I'm here although I don't know about "still" because I only just joined. My password keeps going weird though and condemning me to short periods of abstinence for some reason.

I've been checking in pretty much daily since arriving here and will probably continue to check in regularly until there is nothing to check, even so the archives are a useful resource.

I hope to one day see the powers of alas and haus combine to form SUPER POSTER.

Is alas still around?

The Policy, and stuff like Barbannoy, functioned like watching bigbrother or reading celebrity gossip when I had a rather quiet 7/8 months in work.

I suspect paying attention to as much of the board as possible is the only way to know who's posting. A thread entitled 'lurkers! identify yourselves' is unlikely to be conclusive.

Why don't we just pm Tom and ask if him and Cal can throw together some poster stat graphs at the bottom of the front page, surely that would be quicker than all this speculation business.

My guess: 144. When is the winner announced?

I'm still here, have been for years. Mostly lurking posting only when I feel like I've got something unique to add.

I don't really have time to read and post regularly, often other people have posted things similar to what I would've and the board doesn't seem to need a lot of "me, too!" so I keep quiet.

If I were able to be a regular contributor, I'd be more vocal. That said, I try to read at least something here every day and will definitely feel something important missing if the board were to disappear.

If there's something I could do to help sustain the place, I'd be happy to do it.

Still looking in a couple times a day, posting very very occasionally.

Actually, I probably spend more time reading the archives than in looking at active threads; make of that what you will.

Proinias hello I am the recently deposed finance minister of a small South American country. I desperately need to get $2,000,000 equivalent in my national currency out of the country so that the revolutionary junta cannot spend it all on pipes. Please PM me your bank details so I can transfer this money into your account!!! If I am shot to pieces crossing the border you may keep it all, otherwise I will deposit a commission of %35 into your account on my arrival in the United States. Thanking you for your kindness!

Something doesn't smell right about this.

One minute I think you're trying to date feminists in London and now this. There will be no pm until I've solved this head scratcher.

lurking, mostly everyday, at least in convo, switchboard and lab.

Mon Oncle Ignatius
01:43 / 14.06.08
Um, yeah, just woke up; and I always have a tab with Barbelith open if the browser's running, which it always is. Whether I'm reading or not depends on awakeness, but I skim the recent posts lists every few hours or so.

Posting; less often.

Long time lurker, small time poster.

I used to love this kind of forum and this was the best of them all. I don't check in often enough to have even realised that it was shrinking enough to warrant this discussion. Now I'm depressed.

So you haven't seen your banning thread then?

I'm about and having similar lab-contribution problems.
