I'm still here, sort of. I log in now and again, maybe once every couple of weeks. A lot of the time I wander around, look at the recently updated threads, then log back out.
A lot of my time is spent posting at Metafilter these days, which has an actively posting userbase of at least four or five thousand, and a hard-core of at least five hundred. There's always something going on there. It's also very heavily (and well) moderated by four exceptional moderaters. There's been a lot of discussion on there recently about sexism, racism and the like, and how to tackle them, which reminded me a lot of what I liked about Barbelith. Smart people sometimes say dumb things, and Metafilter is a good place because a fair majority of the users believe in and argue vociferously for it remaining a 'safe place', where people are challenged on unexamined biases and bullshit.
I'm very sad to see Barbelith gradually deflating. I learned my posting chops on (of all places) Yahoo Groups in the late nineties, and Barbelith was the first place I felt I could write and be understood in an adult, non-hostile and constructive environment. I'll still pop in until one day I'm confronted with an error page.
Or until the Great Barbelith Renaissance of 2009. Lo, I have seen it, and it's herald shall be open registration and vigorous moderation. |
