No, I think the bite caused her body to swell up and finally burst open. If she had been shot by someone I think they would have made it a little more evident in the shadow cast on the screen - it would have been a profile silhouette and you would have seen the gun. Also I doubt that the surviving characters would be so trusting of the military if they'd just watched their friend be executed, infection or no.

I assumed it was an Alien-type deal, hence all the panic- shooting the fuck out of someone with automatic weapons probably makes nearly as much mess as them exploding- there must have been more of a risk in letting her live than just that.

I'm not sure we're supposed to know, really- it's that Blair Witch trick again. All I got from that scene was that there was panic, and something AWFUL happened... which is all I needed for it to work.

Yeah, the ambiguity of the scene does add to the suspense. I'll have to watch it in slo-mo when the DVD is out.

Not that I enjoy watching people's head exploding in slo-mo...

You hate it, of course. Every exquisite macro-second.

Yeah, it was the stomach area exploding. You can see her swelling up in the second teaser (but it stops just short of the "money shot," as it were) I don't remember hearing any gunfire in that scene (I could be wrong), and if even if they had shot at her, the bullets could possibly have gone right through her body and pierced the hazmat tent, maybe even catching a bystander in the crossfire.

Also, as the group was being first led through the makeshift infirmary here was a foreshadowing shot of a dead soldier with a burst-open stomach being wheeled away on a stretcher, along with a dead parasite. Could that be the way they reproduce? By injecting their prey with venom that somehow congeals into a full-grown parasite in a matter of hours?

you can find the scene under "Marlena's death" at Youtube, the swollen belly in a loop, even.

anybody who didn't grasp a good mental picture of the monster from the bits shown in the movie can have a good look of it at the hasbro [pretty expensive] toy.

it seemed a bit healthier in the movie, actually.

That was part of my reasoning for thinking that whatever happened if they DIDN'T shoot would have to be really bad... but now I come to think of it, I may have imagined the gunfire because I was expecting it and there was so much hullabaloo at the time.

That Hasbro toy was really neat in a "fun grotesque things to place on bookshelves" sort of way until I looked at the price tag.

Sigh.

But for like 10 parasites, that's a steal, right? ...Right?

Aww, now I've got to buy that Cthulhu figure I saw so I can stage the ultimate no-holds-barred falls-count-anyplane battle of all time.

It looks... wrong. Biologically I mean. Leaving aside the matter of scale, I'm not sure something along that design would feasibly be able to move. And there's no hint of any aquatic/marine aspect to it. Obviously that wasn't as obvious in the film, where you largely get only fleeting glimpses, but still striking. So is the design just sloppy, or is it intentional?

it's pretty much spot-on, i guess. it's supposed to be a cross between a lizard, a deep sea fish and a crab, isn't it? but still looks like a wingless bat to me.

i liked much better this cute home-made version, hehe.

I think it was intentional. They wanted the monster to look... wrong, somehow. To increase the uneasiness when it´s sighted

But yeah, biologically speaing, it just doesn´t make any sense

ooh, one little comment I forgot to add in my last posts, about the Hud character:

Will you shut up already, you annoying person? God, by the time he got killed, I was thinking, "about time, damnit"

The Heroclix Cthulhu?

They've got one of those at my local comic shop and everytime I go there I stare at it covetously. Come to think of it, it's only half the price of Cloverfield.

MUST...NOT...SPEND...MORE...MONEY...
