The Marvel Universe - Who Can You Trust?!! (SPOILERS)

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
04:01 / 29.06.07
I guess what I'm saying is - I don't think any of the present New Avengers team are Skrulls, barring possibly Jessica Jones, and I don't really think Iron Man particularly thinks so either.

sounds suspiciously like something a skrull would say... *peers*

I know we are supposed to be excitedly speculating on who is a Skrull, but I can't bring myself to care.

Aww, tavella. Of course we don't really care, s'just comics. But it's meant to be fun isn't it. This is why we pay for our funny books.

Current top of my Skrull-list is the Sentry's wife (whatever her name is). Sentry thought he'd killed her. I reckon Sentry thought right.

Not a bad idea, that Sentry-wife thing. Not a bad idea at all....

Spaniel
20:47 / 03.07.07
Ooooooh, Twig, that's just the kind of leftfield scariness I want to see.

Tony would be a big boreyawncopout, Mrs Sentry would be resally fun and nasty.

I'm desperately trying to think of a well placed Skrull that might explain some of the Scarlet Witch / Hawkeye messiness.

Agatha Harkness Skrull?

The Falcon

SKRULL COMMAND: Yes, that mouldering corpse Skrull has been really f'in' effective.

And are we to presume that SHIELD is utterly infested with Skrulliness, as explanation for the stuff in the Breakout arc (and the reason Fury went underground).

Maria Hill's role in this? Unwitting puppet promoted in the knowledge that she'd be too far out of her depth to worry about any enemy within?

Speculating this stuff is more fun than the actual books.

What an impressive "zinger"!

Alternatively, trolling. If you have read the last arc of New Avengers and want to offer a critique that explains why you didn't enjoy it, go right ahead.

A stunning contribution Janean, thanks.

Why is it, whenever a writer tries a gimmicky story device like this - surely one of the things that is only really possible in this medium - there are always a subsection of fandom who feel a need to pout like teenagers.

They still buy the books of course, and read the forums evidently, but it is important for them to be able to proclaim in public that they are above all this silliness, and that they won't be playing along.

Is this fulfilling a psychological deficit. Is it control issues? What?

Maria Hill is so a skrull. Why else would she have stepped aside so graciously as director of SHIELD in favour of Tony? She virtually forced him to take that job ...

At some point a skrull's going to tell Tony that none of their plans would have worked out nearly as well if it hadn't been for him, him and his damned arrogance. A gutted Tony will then slink off to think things over at the local branch of 'Spearmint Rhino'. And perhaps emerge, bleary-eyed, a week or so later, having signed away Stark Industries to somebody named Amber.

WAAAAY back and probably off topic now, but no, I an not a Fabian whoever fan (X men books make me break out) and I DO actually have the sense of a man about town. When I say "Marvel Joycoreness" (is joycoreness a word? No, no it isn't') I mean freak Stan and Jack "THIS WEEK THE FANTASTIC FOUR GO INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION, THOR IS SENT TO ASGARDIAN HELL TO FIGHT THE FIFTEEN FURIES OF RAGNOROK" ect. And, I suppose Bendis might be viewed by some as a step in the right direction, I look at the writing that is involved in Annihilation, and I KNOW that there are writers at marvel who know how to write stories that are amazing and fantastical, and still interesting to me, as an adult. Bendis can write a good soap opera, and he can write a good Spiderman, but it seems more and more that Marvel is putting all their eggs in the Bendis basket (and Miller, sometimes) and that saddens me. I don't wish for the days or the spider clone, the age of apocalypse, or the Marvel turned to Image Heroes Reborn. I just don't think that Bendis is all that great, is all...

So, after the latest ish of NA -- Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman --- eeeevil Skrull or still hu-man?

and the plane's mysterious sudden malfunction has me wondering just what that was all about -- I doubt Danny Rand can be a Skrull since he just got his own title which is doing quite well...

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
14:53 / 13.07.07
And, Danny-as-Skrull has been done before. Kl'rt the Super-Skrull aped him in the old Byrne Namor title, mimicking his power by using the Thing's strength and Human Torch's flame concurrently.

IMO, Spiderwoman is a red Herring... she'll bring the skrull to Tony to help facilitate the next New/Mighty crossover and perhaps reconciliation.

I took the "Storm" the NA flew through as the arrival of Thor a book or two over.

Wasn't there an EMP pulse in Mighty, that explains the plane malfunction? (I'm only reading Mighty in the shop)

Jessica Drew is the triple agent. She's not a Skrull, she's just working for Tony. This is Bendis toying with us.

Twig the Wonder Kid

Or Fury. Or Hydra. Or someone. I dunno.

Whatever, it seems painfully slow as a storyline. Whoever it was that allowed Bendis to stick Spider-Man in the Avengers, thus giving him carte blanche for page after page of wacky banter (which presumably he can churn out in his sleep by now, after a hundred plus issues of 'Ultimate') should be, and for all I know actually is, feeling a bit sheepish at the moment.

While it's perfectly legitimate for artists to be paid by the page, I wonder if this still on as far as writers go, especially if, as seems likely in this case, they are in fact ... a skrull.

Spyder Todd 2008
04:00 / 09.11.07
Yes, yes, you were right. But WHEN did he get replaced?

Also, why exactly did the Skrulls replace Elektra, anyway? I mean, outside of Daredevil, is she really all that important?

FinderWolf
04:27 / 11.11.07
I guess there must be some strategic reason they replaced Elektra - control of the Hand (huge Ninja army) and the Japanese criminal underworld might not be a bad asset to have...

So it looks like Bendis wants us to think that Jessica is a Skrull, and the baby is half-Skrull, half-human. Bendis has said that upcoming New Avengers issues will deal with the conflict in Jessica & Luke's relationship. Is Jessica's 'it's so silly for you to think I'm a Skrull' just smart manipulation (if she really is a Skrull)? Is this is a psyche-out from Bendis, where we're clearly supposed to think she's a Skrull and she isn't?

>> Wasn't there an EMP pulse in Mighty, that explains the plane malfunction?

Bendis has said that yes, this is what he was going for. It was female Ultron's EMP.

I note that the Skrulls in Illuminati #5 also feature a Thor Skrull (with a hammer?!?) and a hybrid Colossus/Nightcrawler Skrull (check out his forked tail). This is rather random; although I guess they've encountered the X-Men and Avengers enough to maybe have the info. to replicate these power sets...

Our Lady Has Left the Building
20:32 / 18.05.08
If every big event that could use someone of his stature fighting is going to have the Sentinel put out of action by his fear about his dark side, as in World War Hulk and now Secret Invasion then really the writers need to kill him off or really depower him. Maybe now he'll come back in the final part and punch away the distrust.

As it is, issue 2 is rather dull, consisting of a dumb fight on Monster Island and a scene that 'proves' that some of the heroes that turned up on the crashed ship may well be the real deal. Oh, and the Skrulls take Manhattan. Including a Skrull Doctor Strange it would seem, which must be interesting, has he checked about how Agamotto might think about this?

I never noticed that kicking I got earlier in the thread. From the late Flyboy, no less. Using quotes around the word "zinger!"

Anyway, I thought it worth mentioning to Our Lady that the New/Mighty Avengers thread appears to be a default Secret Invasion thread. Because, y'know, it's all Bendis. And damn right about the Sentry. Either use him or quit using him. Stop making excuses.
