Yep, that was one of the most hilarious comics I've read, ever ever.

In fact the last WWH was a totally brilliant smashtastic snortfest. He smashed the Avengers. All of them.

Next up: the army!

Anyone else belwildered by ongoing attempts in the crossover issues to add depth and weight to this?

Yes, after the Hulk smashes every superhero in New York (although Reed was being a dick again and so was asking for it really) he now has to fight: the U.S. Army, led by Thunderbolt Ross, who didn't manage to smash Hulk in the last 40 or 50 years. Talk about a tension-killer, oooh, I wonder who'll win?

God's yes . The Army full of flimsy little people . And easyerly smashable equipment .

Damn could be a close one

So not like Civil War: X-Men at all, then?

the newest issue of Hero's for Hire actually adds something interesting. it seems there is a bug Queen on Hulk's ship. as far as i knew Miek had said the last queen was killed on the planet and his race was bound to extinction because of it.

which does give a little weight to Miek being the bad guy of the series. pushing Hulk into revenge for a way to get a new planet for his race.

little does he know he'll have to battle the Skrull for it...

How does it compare to baking an apple pie in the afternoon after erecting a set of Ikea shelves? Because that's my baseline for deciding whether to buy comics these days.

The eccense of the pie flavour , with a good side helping of wipped SMASHING .. err sorry meant cream.

It is making a nice light read . Not to heavy and really beats the heck out of sheleves.

So far Hul issues and Ghost Rider have been teh more indepth charcter/plot wwise . Heros for hire the side plots . Avengers , Iron Mand and Xmen just arse kicking

Eh, depth? The Ghost Rider ep was an all-arsekicking absurdofest, if I recall correctly.

But yeah, some of the crossover issues have tried to add dimensions other than SMASH to the proceedings, and they've failed horribly. The core comic is the only one truly worth reading - it knows what it's about and it does its job surprisingly well.

Huge fucking relief after the po-faced disappointment that was Civil War.

I was thinking more the 2nd issues with Johnny Blaze and Ghost Rider fighting themselves. Then the observations Doctor Strange had , and the nice little realization Dr Strange and Reed Richards had.
Were not talking major depth here but a good try.

Yeah, the second GR issue had a really nice dis of the Illuminati. More effective than any amount of them being beaten up by Hulk, Thor, or whoever.

this is totally fun. After leaving #s 2 and 3 in a pile of unread comics, reading 2 and 3 back-to-back was delightful. Thunderbolt Ross is the Dick Cheney of comics --- he knows what's good for everyone, and they're all fools if they don't appreciate his wisdom.

Dr. Strange having a crazy, raging persona called "Zom"? Is this retro-continuity or has this ever been referred to before? (Because Strange says "Zom must live again" even though it's obviously a move with terrible consequences...)

Betty is still described as 'dead' by her father, even though she pretty much was resurrected at the very end of he Bruce Jones run, right?? Guess he (and the world at large) doesn't know....

Two words:

STRANGE SMASH!

I'm really enjoying the shifting focus on exactly who the 'bad guy' is in this comic. Quite an unusual move having the protagonist actually as the Big Threat.

I think we can thank the Peter David Tempus Fugit retcon for that. Basically large but not very well defined chunks of the 10 years or so between Peter Davids two runs where written out as delusions caused by Nightmare - which allows any of the Bruce Jones stuff that made no sense to be ignored.

I took Ross mentioning that his daughter was dead as confirmation that her ressurection was one of the things that was just a nightmare illusion - but I suppose you could be right, at this point most of the events from the Byrne, Jenkin, and Jones runs are still sealed up with the cat in the box - till someone confirms them one way or the other they may or may not have happened.

they gotta bring her back to life, for real, in time for the Hulk movie in summer 2008. That's just how comic business goes.

wow, so Zom is actually a character that's pre-existing -- and going such a way back, no less! Thanks for the link. I'm sure that pretty much every comics reader is going to need some background on Zom; hopefully they provide some backstory in World War Hulk #4 for those without net access.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Well, they didn't bring Jean Grey back to life in the comics with X-3 or kill off Xavier, so maybe Marvel have realised they don't need to try and force the comics into the same position as the movie in the hopes a few extra people might pick up the comic.

enjoyable ending - makes sense for the Sentry to go a bit psycho/on power overload, and that way (plot-mechanics-wise) it makes sense for the Hulk to mostly redeem himself by bringing down the Sentry (which he pretty much does, but Tony Stark has to help out with subduing both the Hulk and Sentry).

However, Bruce ending up in a coma-type state in some secret military installation is a weird way to end the story.. and Jeph Loeb writing a monthly new Hulk ongoing in which a Hulk shows up who has red skin?? Uh, could be bad. Although I like McGuiness drawing the Hulk...

Marvel is doing another famous 'have your lead character die or leave the book and then continue the book for a while with a different lead character' (Superman's death, death of Captain America, John Walker becoming Captain America, Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern) but in a more radical way with the currently monthly book becoming THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES for a while. Interesting...

oh, and the idea of a previously-unknown child of Hulk and whoever his warrior princess/queen was on that mysterious planet (Sakaar, I think it was called?) is potentially cool too...
