it said i'm a satyr (i'm not). or, at least, if i am, it's as a deeply-confused satyr who's convinced he's a sidhe. yup.

i'm a cross-kither.

Mr Ed and Lothar -

As someone who once did a bit 'o work for WW - more on the Mage setup, but anywho - that's precisely the way to use any White Wolf game system.

Half the people who work there are serious in that particularly angsty, woe-is-the-world way. Hence the fact that you can't win...more than that, you're not supposed to try to win or save the world, etc.,etc.
They've actually redone all of their books in the past two years so that everything is nice and uniformly bleak. Anything bright, shiny, or the slightly bit colorful, funny, fantastic, or silly [like the entire "Umbra" concept] has been systematically purged, as has all of the fatbeard-y epic-adventure potential:
You've irrevocably lost the AscensionWar/Apocalypse/Gehenna, the world is dying, now go mope about. And positively no cheering up...!
Broguht to you by the people who made "Pathos" and "Angst" a scorable trait.

Cool beans [Monkeys]!

I used to play lots of 1st and 2nd ed. WW games and slowly just burned out on it. It was around the time that Changeling came out that it started to taste old for me.

There was one cool scene where someone I played with was in character as a Pooka who was slowly sliding into Banality. The high point was when he rocked back and forth singing 'Jesus loves me this I know'. He got the roleplaying point for the session.

What stuff did you work on there?

<looks around>... Oh shit! I fell into geekdom again didn't I?

basically I was the lowly research-monkey whose output was then savagely misappropriated by the "authors"...never got any credit either.

The stuff I take pride in are the Euthanatos, Dreamspeakers, and Cult of Ecstacy Handbooks, which try very hard to pull those three Trads out of their exceedingly bland archetypes. Also the Book of Worlds...hence my grudginess about the decision to lock down the Umbra et al.
The writing is other people, but the ideas...oh yeah.

My big project proposal to become full-time, which was rejected, was doing a WoD set for South Asia...an area that is almost wholly neglected.... They did knick my idea about Nagas, though....

Sadly, the term fuckbake does not originate with me. I think it's something I've picked up off one or other of my friends; possibly an Irish-ism.

A Nocker? What the hell is a Nocker?

Sure, its pretty much right especially the part about creating things with flaws, but dammit, Nockers look like some strange clown things. What's wrong with his nose?

The Monkey

Nocker - comes from knocker, ie "one who knocks." But also from Icelandic/Viking, naugr meaning dwarf.

A fae creature described/imagined by British miners. Characterized as malicious, possessive of their underground hoards of metal etc., dwelling deep tunnels. Often physically described as small and somewhat like a bipedal dog, or just generally simian-ish. Folk linguistics says their name comes from the noise of their industrious attempts to pull down the support-beams holding up the mine-shaft. Shifting layers of rock above and below a mine shaft also make a popping, knocking noise.

The Germans describe a similar critter called a "kobold."

The Nocker in White Wolf, though, is a dwarf in denial or a slightly obfuscated gnome...a fae embodiment/archetype of Iron Age craft-industry. With of course, a healthy dose of Tolkien....

It's all about shamans. It's pretty much the 'Shaman sourcebook'. It's as accurate as it could be and still conform to WW cosmollogy and the Mage magic system.

Take a look at it if you don't mind seeing more of your research used in other people's writing. (I know, that was your job but it still has to be frustrating sometimes).

Are you doing any other RPG related work right now?

Lothar,

Now I'm in college - fourth year anthropology, minor in bio - soon to be a pysch grad [enshallah]. That takes most of my intellectual time.
For awhile I was trying to develop a fRPG on my own, applying cultural anthropological models [and a biological model of speciation, a metaphysic/philosophy that resembled particle/wave physics], but got bogged down in details and conflicting interests. The project was largely grounded in my grudge against D&D as such a ploddingly moralistic, Eurocentric game, with occasional digressions into Orientalist fantasy that make it all so much worse....
Mmm...we're thread rotting sort of. Maybe switch to PM.

For what it's worth, it worked. The Cultist of Ecstasy in my game was a mathematician, and the Euthanatos I always wanted to play was to be a documentary filmmaker instead of yet another assassin. I do have the Dreamspeaker book, but I never got around to figuring out what their place might be in the game I was running (set in London circa 1926).

And I don't trust myself to take these tests and answer honestly instead of trying to pick the "cool result".
