The Oblivion people are currently working on a new entry into the Fallout series, due this time next year. That's exactly what you're looking for in the first instance, I think.

I would like a game that will work on a 1.6Ghz computer with so-so graphics. Medieval Total War 2 was taking too long to load, and MTW1 was giving me illegal operations, so I'm in need of something probably 4-6 years old, preferably turn-based with history!

The obvious choice that springs to mind is Shogun: Total War, which can be got in one of those "3 for £10" deals. But you've most likely already got that.

Not sure if this is suitable exactly for this thread, because I've not got a comparison game in mind.

I want a 'starship/naval combat simulation'. Either the high seas or between the stars - I'd like a game that simulates capital ship combat, complete with damage control, maybe a simulated bridge, realistic physics (to a point, I don't want to fly through space for four weeks before taking a shot). I've got a Mac and an old-style xBox, but I'm thinking of getting hold of a cheap XP licence to run it on my Macbook, so an older PC game is an option too. Any ideas?

Yes... but now that you mention it, I never did try the Mongolian Invasion add-on... great idea!

The other recommendation I have is a game called Majesty - it's a little rare, I believe, but well worth getting (and you can now, I think, download it online).

It's a fantasy rts with a slight twist - you take charge of the castle, build all the buildings etc - but you hire heroes, and they're not under your control. They wander around the land, fighting monsters, levelling up, buying things in your shops etc, but you can't 'order' them to do anything. You can put bounties on lairs and creatures to try and convince them, though.

It's good, it's cheap, it'll work on the system you describe...

It's my Dad's birthday on Wednesday and he's mentioned a desire for some kind of game to play.

He's on a Mac, which limits his choices a little. He fancies something kind of exploratory, rather than action-based. Myst was mentioned, but he says he'd fancy something not quite so empty.

I'm thinking one of the Civ games might be fun for him, but has anyone else got any good ideas for relaxed-but-interesting games on a Mac that aren't shooty or require fast reflexes?

Not so much a birthday present really, since it's a download, but you think he might enjoy any of the old point 'n' clickers of yesteryear that you can run under SCUMMVM?

Also, do you think maybe The Sims 2 might be the kind of thing he might like?
It can get as busy or as slow as you like it. Easy to play to just muck about with every five minutes, or you can put a but more time and strategy into it if you want to see more of what it has to offer.

Sims series, sim-city, anything like that should do the trick. The newer sim-city stuff lets you tinker with the buildings and so on. Is he the sort of dad who enjoys tinkering?

There's also the various train simulators. No, really...

Hmmm.. I get the feeling he might like the scumm stuff. Monke island and day of the tentacle are probably tuned to a similar wavelength to his humour.

I'm not too sure about The Sims - I find myself annoyed by the game for reasons i can't articulate and I get the feeling that in this case I'm my father's son...

Simcity etc may well be good for him. The train simulator is a good idea - he used to love his old train set, so a computer version might go down well.

I'm reminded that he was talking about Cosmic Osmo a while back. He used to have it on one of his oooold macs - it was probably the first game i ever played. I might see if there's an OS X version around...

Thanks for all the tips!

I would like, I mean REALLY REALLY like, I mean more than I like Mudkips...

a WoW-style MMORPG based on the novels of China Mieville. I wanna be a cactus. I wanna live on a floating pirate city. But most of all, I want to see an in-game economy based on capitalism, but one which would reward play based on a socialist ideal, something the co-op nature of MMOs would surely be ideal for. I have no idea how that would work- that's why I'd like someone else to make it. C'mon, it would fucking rock.

Stoatie: I would like that too. I say "like", I mean "sell my soul to any fucker for". You might just be able to do it with the Oblivion engine, if you had many, many years, an astonishing art team, and some sort of economist/programmer hybrid...

Failing that, I would like a large-scale, slow-paced strategy game of the science-fictional variety, with space colonisation and some sort of 3d-tactics element. That is pretty, because I am shallow. And I've played through Startopia now.

Thirded.

I'd settle for Sim Mudkips though.
