f you know music similar to Mary France or Telstar

Well, Telstar is a 60s surf classic -- look up the Surfaris & the Ventures for more, or any of the Rhino surf compilations. A lot of them were named for space-race icons (Telstar was the first big communications satellite -- I've got scans from a book on it somewhere.)

Like so:

These are big scans, sorry -- but the art's too good not to share.

Thanks for the recommendations, grant!

I had a surf compilation once with a song called Barracuda (or possibly Bacaruda, there´s a sample in the song with two guys talking, and one is always pronouncing it wrong). And thanks to the group Heart, I can´t find that particular song among all those other songs on the net.

So a surf or 50ies music mix could be another idea?

Rhino also had a series called "Instrumental Rock" or something like that. The 1960s one is the one to get. Early '60s.

I CAN'T SAY BACCARUDA!!!

Mistoffelees
21:31 / 22.10.06
Yes!

And I´ve discovered who the band and what the song was:

The Barracudas - Summer Fun.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!
11:34 / 23.10.06
[x] BLACKALICIOUS - CHEMICAL CALISTHENICS
Then White No Sugar
Then Dem Bones.

Feverfew
17:35 / 23.10.06
So then. The votes so far are as follows:

White No Sugar and Chemical Calisthenics leading with Two Votes Each.

Telstar, Supercollider and Dem Bones
seem to follow with but a single vote. The running is tense; who will win? Who Will Win?

Six votes to go, people! (I think... Although... Tired brain.)

White, no sugar!

I have now ordered my very own CBX cd.

Feverfew
19:55 / 23.10.06
Which has to be a good thing.

The rest of you voters yet to vote - in your own good time, please, gentlefolk.

Mike Modular
08:25 / 24.10.06
Oh, um, er... This wasn't that easy. I'd have probably said Telstar, but as it's an old favourite already I'm going to go for.... Blackalicious

Feverfew
20:47 / 25.10.06
Right then.

I'm conscious that The Sounds of Barbelith are taking off at the moment, what with Mr Whyte working on the End of the World CD and Mike Modular working on the Dark Carnival, so I think it might be a good thing to close the curtains gently on the Science mix.

There are now twenty-four hours, for those who wish to vote, to do so. I'm sorry if that rushes some people, but, hey, do try harder...

The winning track will therefore be decided, hopefully, by this time tomorrow. I have a small prize for the winner, so there's an incentive.

Thanks to all for being involved, I've had a good deal of joy making the CD and sending it out.

sorry it took so long for me to place my vote - I've been real busy and hadn't gotten a chance to listen to the mix until tonight

I really enjoyed MC Hawking, but my vote is going have to go to the song I almost picked myself - "Frontier Psychologist"

i'm gonna have to cast a vote for telstar, it was the one track that really filled me with the kind of awe that happens when science takes a turn for the awesome.

Has anyone seen "Polyester" (the film what the intro to "Frontier Psychiatry" is sampled from)? Is it any good?

my CBX CD is making me happy. Yay for the Science mix!

Frontier Psychiatry!
Sorry it took so long to vote, have been elsewhere doing otherwise.

Triplets
14:34 / 01.11.06
So - who won?

Feverfew
19:26 / 01.11.06
My apologies - I've been a tired and distracted Feverfew for the last week or so. We have an interesting situation here, though, folks.

By my count, (which is a slightly frazzled count, so point anything out to me that needs pointing out) White no Sugar and Chemical Calisthenics both come out with the winning three votes each. Which technically means a tie. However, I'm willing to send mini-gifts to both people involved as joint winners, so, hey!

Telstar and Frontier Psychiatrist then follow with two votes each, and then it''s Dem Dry Bones and Supercollider with a single vote each.

Thanks again to everyone for their contributions!

Hah! I got the silver medal! I believe, that´s 100% more votes than last time for my mix pick.

Thanks again, Feverfew, for all the work and investments!

Shit!

Damn creation for not being in the 'recently updated threads' section!

Damn my forgetful laziness!

I know it's too late to vote, but i'm going to vote anyways.

I vote for MC Hawking! Yeah! (Surprised it didnt get more votes.

And thanks for all those who voted for Telstar. I love the track. And silver is such a nicer colour! Whoop!

Also: CDDB was me. Glad it worked for you Matt.

Yay for science!

You warm my heart. Hawking was mine.

Simply for the line: "I ain't Thomas Dolby -- science doesn't blind me. You think you're smart? Form a line behind me!"

It paradoxically makes me stupid with delight.

Does Clint Boon have a Nobel? Does he have a kind of radiation named after him? I think not. I think not.

Although the idea of Blackalicious Radiation pleases me.

Or even better, a Blackalicious Reaction. More complicated than titration.

Oooh, I didn't know that the singer for Tribe was also the voice of SHODAN from System Shock. That's rather cool. Good song, too.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
11:13 / 10.11.06
I didn't know that either! That's way cool!

Polyester- the John Waters film? I didn't recognise the sample, but then I haven't seen it in years. It's very good, though.
