Peaches in general are much overated if you ask me. Lolly or no lolly.

There was no yogurt in these peach lollipops.

But Olullabelle, I don't care for the fruit itself, but they make a damn fine lolly.

What the hell are these hippo things? I'm British, and i've never heard of them (the only Hungry Hippos i'm aware of is a kiddie board game)...

I have to strongly dispute the "british style" chocolate being the best chocolate thing - real chocolate has at least 60% cocoa solids, and definitely no milk... Green & Blacks is pretty good stuff (or used to be), especially Maya Gold, but i'm not sure of the future of the brand now it's owned by Cadburys...

Got to say i love the idea of chipotle (if that is what i assume it to be, basically smoked chilli) chocolate... anyone got a link to who makes it?

Wine Gums have a slightly different flavour and texture to other fruit gums, but i'm not quite sure how to describe it... richer and more yielding, perhaps? Nicer IMO, anyway...

Some of these US/Canadian things sound intriguing, but i've heard American chocolate is even more milk-and-sugar and less real cocoa than British stuff... comparative info, anyone?

in terms of american chocolate being even more sugar/milk than british chocolate, it's true if we're talking about your ultra-basic milk chocolates like hershey's or nestle. all i really have as comparison for uk milk chocolate is the cadbury milk chocolate, and honestly they're more "subtlely different in flavor" than "better" or "worse". in terms of quality chocolate, most decent supermarkets will have a good selection of premium and 'artisan' chocolates that i think rival the european stuff.

with milky chocolate, i think it's not so much a matter of bad chocolate, but another type from another time. if you get brought up on hershey's or cadbury or whatever, you're likely to always find it to have a certain comfort-food goodness about it.

additionally, there's shit like the palmer brand that are basically cocoa flavored sugar/hydrogenated oil. yuck.

I think the hippos are an offshoot from the Kinder Egg people, a couple of years ago the only toys in the eggs were hippo statues. I fear that in this age of playstations, a small plastic toy in a small plastic egg that's very difficult to open inside a thin chocolatey membrane may not be the lure it once was. And have you noticed how the fillings in Cadbury Creme Eggs are almost solid and rank these days?

I've heard rumours that Tim-Tams are in UK Tescos but the stores near me never seem to sell them.

I dunno, my little boy seems to really like Kinder eggs. And I think they do well in the adult market too, if buy one Kinder egg, you might as well buy three and then you get one each.

The problem with American chocolate is that it's 'waxy'. It doesn't melt very well in your mouth. I think it has things in it that British chocolate doesn't, but I don't know what those things are.

Green and Blacks chocolate is amazing, especially the praline boxed chocolates but I can't very often find them. Also good is Green and Blacks milk chocolate, and Cadbury's is lovely on the right occasion - which is when you can't afford the extortionate Green and Blacks.

My Minstrels arrived! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU they are as good as I remembered, combining the taste of sweet sweet chocolate and the strange mixture of cigarette smoke and dashed dreams that is London.

Mostly chocolate, really.

HOORAY!

The cookies came, and I'm a happy boy! Imagine if you will, UK Lithers, a Jammy Dodger but with fondant maple syrup instead of jam. Mmmmmmm..... Having to restrain myself in order to make them last. Who knows when next I'll get my hands on such things...?

Do you know Jammy Dodgers, Matt? If not, then you shall receive...

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

The only Dodgers I know are Artful and Los Angeles. SEND ME JAMMY BRITISH COOKIES PLEASE.

Yes, that was shouting. I am that excited.

That's probably because they're old. A new batch are laid of couple of months before easter each year. If you've god a hard one, it's probably past its sell-by date. Compain to Cadbury and you'll probably get a box of new ones.

From the lovely and talented Moonweaver, I have received a box of chocolate. Strange, kiwi chocolate, with kiwi in it, which is delicious. And other things!

And also chocolate is winging its way over to New Zealand in return.

This thread is not easily located by title.

You want Minstrels? I can get you Minstrels dude...

Shouldn't you be standing near the mouth of an alleyway, holding open your trenchcoat while saying that?

Quantum
14:38 / 09.10.06
That's more of a hobby, holding my trenchcoat open in alleys. I'll post you some Minstrels if you send me something nice from the US of A. What do they have that's good there?

Quantum: he is, in fact, super. Not as super as Eccleston.

What do you want from the US of A? I can get you candy. I can get you...um, I dunno. Name it.

For the record, I SENT the chocolate, and its never-being-received is a mystery. Some theory in the "oh dear" thread, I think. I'll try again, Kali, but with more scent-proof wrapping.

Actually, xk's post above makes me wonder if a little Cadbury Tiny Halloween Chocolate Bar pack would be the thing.

xk, I would love said bucket. However, I must offer something in return. I do wire crochet and sculpture, would some form of silvery tiara be a suitable swap?

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
19:52 / 10.10.06
No one ever said you didn't send the chocolate. I just have no idea why I never received it.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

I'm a bit worried that it may have, er, melted on route. I imagine that a brown-drippy package could have caused some justifiable freak-out at a postal office somewhere.

But autumn is here! Chocolate-mailing season, I say!

Kali, Queen of Kitteh
20:53 / 10.10.06
Okay, now THAT'S funny.

"Oh dear, what is that coming out from that package???"

I'm being a complete chocolate snob by refusing any other except foreign chocolate.

Quantum, I'd love more Minstrels. Maple cookies seem to be popular on your side of the pond, or I'm sure I could find other maple goodness if you like the taste -- maple butter is delightful, especially, and syrup never fails to satisfy.

I'm offering any candy you want in exchange for fizzy jelly babies.

And someone please explain wine gums.

Quantum
17:10 / 20.10.06
Okay, I'll send wine gums, fizzy jelly baby-ish things and minstrels to either of you, just PM me your address. I don't know if I want maple butter through the post though, maybe something more durable... I've got Army and Navy sweets as an added bonus too, they're licorice & aniseed hard boiled sweets, old skool stylee.

Quantum
17:11 / 20.10.06
Matt, is ther such a thing as maple syrup hard boiled sweets? I'd fancy that.
Kali, wine gums can't be explained, only experienced. They're a bit like jelly babies but not.

Wine gums, da facts!
