MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

I was just reading over some notes from a trip I took to England in '05 and I now have a desperate craving for Galaxy Minstrels, which are not available at all in Canada.

Pity me, Barbelith. Pity me with postage and candy.

I do not know what Canada has to offer you... our Québecois mélange of french fries, gravy and curd cheese would probably be inedible by the time it arrived in England... but I'd be happy to work out some sort of Canadian-UK candy swap if there's something you can't get over there.

I will send you some. PM me your address and I will happily pity you with postage and candy. (But only if you from now on refer to it by it's proper name which is chocolate or, at a push, sweets.)

I will send you a lot of chocolate if you will parcel up Leanne Franson and send her over.

She is Canada's finest. (Only if she doesn't mind, of course.)

Hey, if there are going to be deliveries of sweets, I want in on this. I've got a lust for Cadbury that's killing me.

Kali I can send you cadbury from NH. We have two fine store that carry English brands of chocolates.

I think you folks on this North American cont. will find if you look lot's of online sellers and shippers of such treats.

Well, we have a place around here that sells British goods, but it's not as lovely as finding a package with a UK postmark on it.

I have a craving for Irish jaffa cakes; somehow they're thicker, and sweeter, than their British counterparts.

But this is but an idle musing.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

Should I mod this into a kind of NA-UK candy exchange thread? Because I'm willing to send Canadian candy to anyone who is willing to send me British candy. And Kali is apparently game too.

I'm not sure what Canadian candy IS, mind you, but I'll figure something out.

Oh, and yes, there are mail-order places that deal in UK candified goods, but postage & handling is exorbitant compared to just dropping something in the mail.

Plus: fun!

I like this idea, Matt. Let's do it!!!

I have plenty of access to bizarre Asian candies if anyone here wants a daring basket of untold horrors (and maybe a few delights).

Hey, I like that idea. Weird candy baskets!

There is very little uniquely australian confectionery, but if I say TimTams, maybe people will want them. They seem to be a fairly popular international trade item.

Just putting another node on this network...

Red Frog Rising!
Australian confectionery is thankfully a lot more that 'tim-tams'...if my memory serves me well (tis been over a decade). If any of the below exist i would be honoured to swap you some of NZ's finest high cocoa solid goodness..
Firstly, I remember there is the sizzling sweetness of the 'Violet Crumble', in my gastro searching no other 'bar' really subtly balances chocolate and honey in such a way. Extremely moreishly dangerous aswell, you simply keep eating them till your gums get shaved off by the honey knifes...bliss!
Secondly, there is the sheer playtime and multi-use potential of the 'Pollywaffle'..gooey marshmallow, crunchy wafers and chocolate yumska, with the mysterious aftertaste of 'air' that has been trapped within the bar.
and lastly, the unforgetable 'Cherry Ripe'...all I can say regarding that is this design masterpeice is CHERRY'S and CHOCOLATE! A beautiful and totally underrated flavour blend, that in my knowledge only exists in this form in Australia.
ooohhh....
i am going to sleep well tonight, thank you red frog...

This seems to be a site specializing in Canada-only candy; I've linked to the chocolate bar section. I can't guarantee that everything on that page will be available to me, though.

Matt, I will swop you any sweetie you care to name for a tube of Slott's Original Swedish Mustard, to which I have become addicted. Alas, I only have one-eighth of a tube left from my trip to Stockholm, and cold turkey looms.

Can you or anyone else help? In return I can send chocolates, Marmite, Spam, etc.

eh? What do you mean Kali? You don't have Bisto? How do you make instant gravy? Do you have to go through the rigmarole of making real gravy everytime you want it? Fair enough for a weekly roast but what about if you just want a quick bangers and mash?

I think there are packets of powdered gravy in the grocery store. I think.

I don't make brown gravy very often but I am very fond of sausage gravy with biscuits.

I have access to some really amazing chocolate.
byrne &carlson

Of special note is their chipotle and smoky salt chocolates.

Anyhow as I'm sitting next to one of the world's finest chocolatiers I figured I'm honor bound to offer some up. Being as it is high end stuff the cold months are more suitable for shipping.

Erm, for UK folks desperate for overseas goodies, there's always Cybercandy, P&P can be ruinous on heavier items but they do have shops in Brighton and near Covent Garden.

It's not anywhere near as much fun as getting exciting parcels in the mail, though!

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

I'll look for Slott's next time I'm at the grocer's, WhiskeyPriestess, but... are you sure it's a Canadian thing? With the name "Swedish Mustard" and all?

There's a Montezuma's near me if anyone is interested. They do lots of fun stuff. Also a shop of the type which sells boiled sweets by weight if you have a hankering for rhubarb and custards.

Custards probably don't travel so well. Drat.

They're boiled sweets with rhubarb and custard flavour, like these (except the ones at the place I'm think of are a little less... lurid).

On Cybercandy (could they have come up with a more awful name? No. No they couldn't), it's also very very expensive.

I went in there the other day in an effort to get my hands on a peanut butter Twix only to find that it was going to set me back about a quid fifty.

I decided nay.

MattShepherd: I WEDDED KALI!

I'll have a look, Boboss. I know they have Twix in my area, but PB Twix aren't familiar to me. If so, we're in bidness.

lord, this thread's got me excited. if anyone's from kansas (or lives near the vermont country store), i'm seriously in need of valomilks...

the western/northwestern u.s. selection available to me, if anyone's interested:

abba-zabba (weird white nougat bar with a peanutbutter center, kind of hard to eat, tasty, mystifying to bystanders that have never seen one)
idaho spud (cocoa-marshmallow center covered with chocolate and coconut, supposed to look like a potato, looks sort of like a turd, tasty)
chickosticks (peanut, coconut, and sugar formed into a stick. sort of like the inside of a butterfinger, but harder and better. VEGAN).
big hunk (nougat and peanuts. never tried them, they scare me)
u-no bar (fluffy chocolate center, chocolate and almond coating. pretty good.)
look! bar (chocolate covered peanut nougat, apparently. i don't get near them)
some sort of bing cherry candy with a chocolate coating and a whole cherry inside (not the "twin bing" that palmer makes)
rocky road bars in many varieties, i don't know much about them

also, i'd highly recommend steve almond's book "candy freak".

Matt, I have developed over recent years a dependecy on Dare Maple Leaf Cookies (or nearest equivalent, of which I have sampled many equally fantastic variations) As seen here. Should I not taste these at least once a year, I fear for the consequences... Therefore, I pledge to send you WHATEVER YOU WANT* in exchange for these delights, as most of my Canadian friends seem to either forget I am addicted to them or just don't go home often enough. If you want the pure British boiled sweet experience, I recommend you keep an eye on Mr Humbug (once the site's completed), my proper local sweet shop, because they have all the classic UK shit to blow your sweet tooth's mind, and I'll shop to order for for some of those sweet, sweet cookies...
