It could just be me, but I'm interested in who actually reads Policy. Personally, I think it should be compulsory, but then I'm a bastard like that.

So if you've clicked on the Policy, then tell us. Tell us why, if you want to. Personally, I'm more interested in how many responses this gets that the content, though obviously that could change given the content.

Incidentally- don't tell anyone about this thread. Not for SSSHHHH!!! secret! reasons... I just want to know who actually sees it. IE who reads the Policy.

I check it every other day or so.
Why? Well because I'm curious how things are going, if everybody is playing nice, and/or if I can help in some way.

Also sometimes folks say the funniest shit in these threads.

I read the older threads on the banning process to learn what offends the community and how it deals with conflict.

To me Policy has a meta-thread quality that has allowed me to see how other people are viewing an exchange elsewhere on the board. Ed-u-ma-ka-shun-nel.

I check the Policy every time I hit the 'lith, before leaving, just to make sure I'm up to date on current meta-talk, trends on the board, possible shifts in procedure or policy, amd debate surrounding the behavior of trolls.

I also really like to read the policy because some of the most engaging debate happens here. And I'm always amazed (and come away appreciating this place even more) when I see people solve problems and change boards practices with their ideas rather than new lines of code in the backend.

I know the Policy has a reputation for being unread, but I have a feeling most people nose about here quite regularly. This thread will test that theory I suppose.

Tom Paine's Bones
02:19 / 23.06.06
I read the Policy pretty much every time I'm on Barbelith.

I check it out every couple of days.

Hardly ever post here, but I read the policy pretty obsessively. Not only does it seem only sensible to do so, but also it's usually a very interesting read.

I read it when I want drama, but sometimes it surprises me by having nutritive value as well.

I read Policy because
a) I want to know if people are whining about me
b) I want to know who people are whining about

I love drama. That's why.

I read it at least once a week or so... maybe more if I'm bored at work. Usually I check out the Moderation Requests Thread moreso than anything else.

Why? Just to see what's happening, and to find the links to the nasty threads that have been locked and fought over.

I browse Policy on a daily basis, and normally post on the active threads. Some of the really interesting stuff on Barb happens in here.

07:43 / 23.06.06
Yep. I read it as much for the interesting conversations as for keeping abreast of policy changes.

Present. I'm interested in group processes.

I take a look every few days. I think it's important to be involved in discussions that might have an impact on an individual or the community. When there are problems, I feel like I should at least follow what is going on and where appropriate contribute.

But I admit I love the drama and the entertainment as well. And other bits of the board sometimes make less sense if I don't know about what's being said in policy... (references in individual posts or someone's response to another poster).

Yeah I do for what its worth. I enjoy the better class of arguments.

I check fairly regularly, even if I'm not posting much, so that I can keep myself informed about important issues on the board.

10:10 / 23.06.06
This is my first post in policy but i spend alot of time reading it to keep abreast of current affairs

i also think, as many have said above, that some of the most engaging and entertaining threads take place here, as the discussion is geared towards the actual operations of a community and not just entirely academic.

This is good... it'd also be good if some of the people who DO post here more regularly at least checked into this thread just to say "hi", so we can get more of an idea of numbers.

Oh, OK. I didn't want to skew things.

I think this is my second time reading this thread. That should give you an idea of how often I'm around the forum.

Jack Fear
12:16 / 23.06.06
Yeah, I'm around.

I think the less time I spend reading Barbelith on the whole (and my hours logged have been in decline as the years go by), the more time (proportionally) I spend in The Policy. Since I don't have time to read every thread, cruising for drama, I use The policy to point me towards the hotspots.

I read Barbelith far more then I post, but I always check Policy - partly because I like to feel up-to-date on what's happening, and partly because I'm interested in the meta-debates that occur here (The Psychology Of Trolling etc...)

I don't often post in The Policy, but I read it almost every time I'm on Barbelith.

It's very useful for getting a sense of where the board is and where it wants to go (and sometimes where it's been as well). There are good arguments to be found here too - both in the entertaining and well-reasoned variations.

13:29 / 23.06.06
I stop in at the Policy Shop just about every time I'm on--first stop after conversation, usually, unless I'm actively engaged in a debate elsewhere on the boards. Same reasons as above--best place to get a sense for what's really going on here as a community, where the hot spots are, and watching the process. I sometimes post.

Nice idea, Stoatie.

Yeah, I check in pretty regularly throughout the average day and post here every once in a great while. I feel it's part of my responsibility as a member to know what's going on.

This is good... it'd also be good if some of the people who DO post here more regularly at least checked into this thread just to say "hi", so we can get more of an idea of numbers.

Often though, its a case of catching threads in policy a bit late on. With limited spare time, once I've got round to reading everything I've either run out of time or my views have been covered pretty comprehensively by other posts.

I think the thread is read a huge amount but not necessrily posted to.

I also wonder if newer posters think it's a 'mods only' forum?

as a new-un, the Moderation Request thread was very helpful for asking the mods for help conversationally. Seems like the right place to ask questions.

I spend most of my Barbelife reading policy, it’s quite slow moving, so I get to read every part of the active threads. I would pretty much agree with all of the reasons for, already given above.

I read the policy.

I pop in here every time I take a run through the fora to see what the status quo in the community is.

The RSS feed we have is pretty helpful for keeping up on things too.
