There is another element I would like to bring to the discussion... Games in general (and not only video games) create a temporary reality where players can practice skills and rehearse scenarios in a mostly harmless way. This can be very similar to creating a mindspace where symbolism and mental representations are used to enact magic. Moreover, games also often serve as a rite of social bonding.
However, one of video games' shortcomings is that players have a very limited capacity to alter to game environment and game rules. This makes tweaking games to suit a magical purpose much more difficult, while physical games and board games can be easily adapted by players to fill whatever need or gaming preference they have. Videogame designers should explore the possibility of creating more open-ended gaming environments where players have more control over how the game is played, but this is a difficult task given how hard it is to alter the video game medium. |
