Beejebus (I am assured there is no correct spelling), where have all the late folk gone? All watching the WC or Big Brother Live? Or better things to do? Although what beats late shifting I just don't know... Is there anyone around tonight

Just finished watching the Heat win the NBA Finals. I think I can safely say that this year's NBA playoffs were the most competitive that I've ever seen. My congrats go out to Shaq Daddy, D-Wade, 'Twaan and the rest of the team. Fucking great basketball.

Anybody about?

I'm here. Last overnight shift, hopefully EVAH.

Is it the sweet, lazy job or the shitty job?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
05:20 / 21.06.06
Here I is, in front of the machine, making words out of shit. I'm dry as a bone.

I highly recommend tracking down some Feist and giving her a listen.

It's not technically late here, but I'm having a lazy afternoon surfing the interweb, drinking wine and listening to new hip-hop.

Anyone else lazing about the Barb?

I'm hopping between interweb and the monumental sadness of the BB eviction show. Also with wine.

But Scarface on the telly later, so it's all good.

I'm wandering about. I could do some work here in the office, but naaaaaah.

No work! It's a no work day. Here, anyway.

On first listen, the GZA/DJ Muggs collaboration is pretty damn good. I may listen to it again consecutively.

Scientist, is it just me or is at least half the British population of the board obsessed with Big Brother? Would you mind explaining the appeal?

Yeah! Not that you have to justify you viewing habits, but...okay, yeah, you do.

Something about the car crashes and the slowing down and such?

The weird thing is I have a froth-mouth hatred of reality television usually. It's lazy, horrible, and generally soul-destroying.

Big Brother's all that, but there is something of a five-lane pileup about it. Everyone in there is, to one extent or another, shallow and fame-hungry (although no-one ever gets famous via the bloody show).

It only really got interesting when they started the "Big Brother gets nasty" stuff a few years ago. Custom-designing the house to be ever more claustrophobic and stressful and the like. Putting the housemates through nasty twists and turns like labrats.

(Oddly enough it was about the same time that there was the occasional break in the livefeed as security had to go in and break up near-fights).

DJ Shadow currently on the ol'iTunes at the mo'.

Nice. Endtroducing was my soundtrack a few years back. Rump shakin'!

there is something of a five-lane pileup about it.

Thought so. I got caught up in the first and only season of 'Mad Mad House' for very similar reasons.

(Can I just express how odd it is for me to be Shifting at this hour, in this place? Feels like I'm breaking the rules.)

(Oh, and also, I am now fifty posts away from 1000. Took me three years and change. Sad.)

Ahh, here we go, the inevitable Organ Doner. I swear I must have eight separate versions of this from various CDs.

I reckon his next big thing will be a concept album. Four hours of continuous freeforming variations on Organ Doner.

I be angry if it didn't sound so good.

D'you have his UNKLE album? Great great listen. Mike D, Thom Yorke, and a few others make an appearance. The opeing track is...ah, I can't describe it. Suffice to say you NEED to hear it. And not an Organ Donor to be found!

Ahh yes. Psyence Fiction, the album that killed trip-hop.

I heard a rumour they'd designed it to be an alternative soundtrack to A New Hope. Tried it one night and it kinda works. The Knock was for the Death Star assault.

Of course there was a certain amount of, shall we say, chemical enhancement that night so that may have contributed to the effectiveness of the combo (oh to be young again).

I agree. S'why I asked. So, the people are so desperate to be on TV that their exploitation isn't stomach-turning because they are, essentially, asking for it and aware of it? I suppose I can see that. And watching it as a psychological experiment is intriguing. Still, doesn't sound like my glass of wine, as it were. And I still can't see why it's so popular here on the Barb.

I guess it's just shocking to me that the BB thread has 2500 replies and, for example, Jack Fear and I are the only ones on the entire board who give a fuck about baseball (Not that baseball has anything to do with BB, but I use it as an example because it's another form of entertainment marketed to "teh masses").

DJ Shadow is cool, though I lack any of his albums. Which ones are the best?

Oh, and the standard Lateshift question: What are you drinking!?

For me it's Villa Mt. Eden Cabernet Sauvignon 2001, with a fridge full of Michelob Ultra Amber for later (the Mich Ult is an experiment. Don't judge my beer taste on it).

Yeah, quite possibly. I remember once, long ago, listening to Endtroducing and watching the birds on my on my back porch. They danced a lovely jig right in time to the aforementioned Organ Donor that day.

We're not as young, or as high, as we once were. Sad, really.

Only water, Jake. No beer at work for me today. Which sucks, cuz I was kinda hoping...

And I bet you know which DJ Shadow album I'd recommend by now, doncha?

Jake, Colossus of Clout
20:19 / 23.06.06
Endtroducing would be my guess! I'll hunt it down.

Sorry about the water. There's always cocktails after work.

Do that. I daresay you won't be disappointed.

There are indeed. Corona with lime will be the drink of choice tonight. Along with a bit of "enhancement" later in the eveing.

I'm out.

Mmmm..... Corona with lime is a great summer beverage. My other favorite hot-weather drinks: Margaritas with Sauza Hornitos and Grand Marnier, Heinekens just above freezing, Tokay wines, Sapphire martinis dry as fuck, Geary's Summer Ale... I fucking love summer.

This new Lupe Fiasco album may be this summer's soundtrack. It fits the lazy, hazy days so well.

Los Americanos need to try Pimms. We didn't have that in Scotland but now I'm in London, I'm awash with it all summer.

Pimms (a gin-based fortified concoction) mixed 1:2 or 1:3 with Lemonade, ice, fruit (apple, orange, lemon), cucumber (originally borage), and fresh mint. Delicious, cooling, and gently, decorously intoxicating.

I've always considered gin an autumn drink, myself...

Jake, Colossus of Clout

Strong truth. As are all drinks.

But all drinks also complement certain times of year best. Since I drink almost every kind of alcohol, I like to cycle through by season.

Alcohol is cooling in the Summer, while Vivaldi's twangin' his fiddle
Beer is cosy and warming in the Autumn, when the chill starts
Hash is a fireside treat while Greasy Joan doth keel the pot
Speed blows away the cobwebs in the Spring when the grass is riz
But Rehab is all year round.

Imagine group psychotherapy with Tara Palmer Tomkinson and Michael Barrymore. Oh no no no... The horror, the horror! Just say no no no... (...fuck off, Kids!)

Not been on the Barb for what must be a couple of years.

Thought I'd brighten my knackered night shift with a foray into the Late Shift and now you, you sozzled bunch, have only made me worse with your booze addled ramblings.

I

WANT

A

BEER!

Jake, Colossus of Clout

Go get one!

Everyone deserves a delicious, delicious beverage.

Yes.

There is a 24 hour Tesco just opposite my workplace, but getting fired is generally too high a price to pay for a shifty beer in the office.

Guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow night - I feel World Of Warcraft and few beers may well be on the itinerary.
