Well- I could see the teen drama aspect of Invincible being a little bit offputting to some, but it's really just a ton of well-written superhero fun. It's clear that everyone involved loves superheroes and is having a ton of fun on it, the art's fantastic, it's self-aware but not obnoxiously so, and frequently has its tongue in cheek without being silly. A lot of the minor superheroes and supervillains are absolutely inspired, hilarious, or both. It's clearly taking a lot of cues from mainstream superhero books (there's a villain named The Elephant who makes a brief appearance, and a pseudo-Justice League play a big role, which sounds lame but works really well) but it never seems dull and it never descends into parody. It's basically Robert Kirkman writing about how much he loves superheroes.
In summary: great characters, great art, lots of love put into it, hugely entertaining. Check out at least the first trade. |
