It's been a while since we had a round of the classic game of paranoia and suspicion, and since we now have a sparkly new games forum, who's interested in getting another game going?
A quick recap of the rules: Mafia is a game in which a group of players comprise the community where the game is set. The community has a Leader, who oversees the action of the game, but does not otherwise participate directly.
The Leader secretly picks a number of people to be the Mafia, whose collective goal is to eliminate the other players from the game. The Mafia players know who each other are.
The Leader also secretly picks a number of people to be Detectives, whose goals are to investigate other players in the hope of finding out which players are Mafia. The detectives do not know each other.
There are two game cycles, Day and Night. The game begins in Day, with all of the players trying to convince others of their own innocence, or of the guilt of other players. Both public posts in the game thread and private PMs are permitted.
After a set period of time, the Leaders calls for a vote. Every member of the community then makes a public accusation against another player. Only one vote per person is allowed,
and you cannot accuse yourself. The votes are then tallied, and whichever poor sod has received the most accusations is Executed by the community. Ties are broken by the Leader. It is then revealed to all what kind of person the Executed was.
Night then falls. The members of the Mafia collectively (by PM) decide on one player to eliminate, and convey their choice to the Leader by PM.
During the Night, the Detectives are each permitted to ask the Leader (again, by PM) if one other player is Mafia, and the Leader must answer 'Yes' or 'No' truthfully. The Detectives may then use this knowledge during the day to influence conversation.
Day comes again, and the Leader informs the commnity who the Mafia has killed. Day proceeds as above, and is followed by Night, and so on, until only Mafia are left or all the Mafia have been Executed by the voting community.
The first game will be run by myself. The total number of players will dictate the number of special characters, and - if the total number of players exceeds 10 - I will introduce the following two other special characters:
The Doctor - The Doctor can extend their protection over one other player for the duration of the Night Cycle. Protected players cannot be killed by the Mafia, and are informed if the Mafia tried to attack them (but not who the Mafia are).
The Fink - The Fink hates the law, and their goal is to get the community at large to Execute the Detectives. Each Night, the Fink asks the Leader (by PM) if one other player is a Detective, and the Leader must answer 'Yes' or 'No' truthfully. The Fink may then use this knowledge during the day to influence voting.
Assuming interest, the first game will be run by myself. For practical purposes, the Day Cycle will last for either one week or until all players have cast their votes, whichever is the sooner, and once a vote is cast it cannot be altered.
Players who drop out, or fail to vote within the alloted time will be automatically killed the Mafia, in addition to the player the Mafia chooses as normal. The remaining votes will be tallied as normal.
Other than that, players are permitted total freedom with what they do and say, and a little character roleplaying is always welcome.
So, thems the rules, whose up for it?
*Important - This game is utterly reliant upon frequent participation. Please only offer yourself for playing if you log in at least once every few days. |
