I know it was mentioned in the 'Is there something wrong with TOOL?' thread, but it really needs its own (assuming there are still enough fans on the board to merit it - guess we'll find out).

Just to clarify, by the way, this is a thread for discussion of the new album and material by people looking forward to it, or who've listened to it/read an interview/seen the video/seen them live etc. Please post to this thread if you just want to generally talk about why you don't like TOOL. That's the official 'TOOL suck, no they don't, yes they do' thread. It's still current - as of writing this it's on this forum's first page - so no excuses. Post general TOOL-hate here and you are spamming. If, on the other hand, you want to talk about why you don't like the new album/video/artwork/Maynard-wig, feel free to post here or there.

Tracklisting is as follows (assuming their official website isn't fucking around with us, as is their wont):-

Vicarious
Jambi
Wings For Marie (Pt 1)
10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)
The Pot
Lipan Conjuring
Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)
Rosetta Stoned
Intension
Right In Two
Viginti Tres

I am quite unreasonably excited about this. The release of Lateralus was, for a variety of reasons, a defining moment for me that I still refer to when talking about Unreasonably Cool Stuff. I am, of course, also trepidatious. There's been no real hype so far, so all it's got to do is live up to their history. Which is fairly mindblowing. TOOL exist as one of those bands/projects that are worshipped as much as admired or loved, much as many do Radiohead, or the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin. Lateralus comfortably exceeded most fans' wildest dreams of what 'the new TOOL album' might be like. Can 10,000 Days survive expectations now that the bar's been raised that high?

I'm excited, and I didn't even like Lateralus that much (well, less so than Undertow and Aenima.) I've also never seen them live so I'm pleased they're playing Download and two dates at Hammersmith Apollo.

Amazon even has a shot of the cover up: clicky

I'm trying not to get too excited. Tool is one of my favorite bands and if I get too excited, I may go "blah" when I hear the album.

Maynard has a lot to apologize for with this album, I think. Thirteenth Step was hit and miss, mostly miss, and Emotive or whatever the fuck it was called, was just plain awful save for the song Passive. For about two years, Maynard was on my shit list. Let's hope this album thrusts him back into my good graces.

Someone on Amazon said :

"Come on, Rossetta Stoned?Lost keys?, you would have to be a Idiot. Every time tool puts out a new cd, they always put out fake titles, playlists and even fake mp3s (so, if you download prior to release, you just downloaded, row row row your boat.) 10,000 days (thats lame)? have more faith"

Maybe this is right, but at least we don't have long to wait now to find out. I just want it to be May 2nd really quickly. Will this album be any good though? Hell yes. The Arctic Monkeys album is the best I've heard so far this year, and when this year is over, Tools album will be the one that I liked the best. I don't feel it, I don't think it, I know it.

I loved both 13th Step and, to a lesser extent, eMotive, but each to his own I guess. Though it's a little unfair to hate Maynard for them either way- APC's Billy's band, really- Maynard's just the hired help.

Yeah, I can divorce the two quite easily - having bought and sold 'Mer de Noms' it's become evident that A Perfect Circle are not the band for me; there were a couple decent tracks on 'Mer..', as I recall, but it wasn't really enough. It wasn't even clear to me what Matt was on about, initially, so far off my radar have that band slipped.

This though... psyched. Tool are the only metal band I really give a rat's ass about anymore, which is a long walk from my teen years when it'd've been hard to find a non-metal band I gave likewise for.

How bad can this album possibly be really ? It's not like there is anyone else that remotely sounds like Tool. As for rating all the Albums maynards voice is on : I liked Mer de Noms when it came out, but it's aged badly for me. It sounds immature as far as i'm concerned. Thirteenth Step had extremely boring and stupid cover art, but the album had a few gems, and the production sounded awesome on it. I didn't like emotive, but I considered it really just a cover album. Lateralus I didn't like when it came out, but Its really grown on me. I think its a solid piece of work. Aenima is an awesome set of music and really was an influence on me when i was much younger. Undertow also had a big impact on me when I was even younger than that, although haven't listened to it in years.

A new tool album always gets me excited. Has it really been 5 years?

Lateralus was to me a distinctly positive album compared with Aenima and Undertow. If my memory serves me it was released pre 911, so it will be interesting to see what effect recent events have had on their sound.

Maynard's just the hired help.

hahahaha I wonder what he'd say to that?

Wow, don't forget Adam Jones aswell. Personally, I'd prefer Adam to be at the top of his game than I would Maynard, because I can listen to a song where the vocals and lyrics aren't spot on but the guitar is, but if the guitar work is off, then I'm not too sure that I can.

April will go on for too long either way. Oh, and has Dave Bottrill produced this album aswell? Please say he has....

02:44 / 24.03.06
no, he hasn't. Actually, Tool is producer of this album, but the engineer is joe barresi (queens of stone age) on this one.

Neat, I'm sure I won't miss him too much then.

The image according to Amazon.

Even though Tool is a big fan of alterna-titles and fake track listings, I think at this point, we can safely assume this is the album title and probably the track titles.

But I guess we find out and this post will remain preserved until so. Unless I edit it to make my prediction correct. MWAHAHA.

And while this is a fan-created image, I hope the CD actually looks like this:

And the cover looks maybe like this:

The first single will be the first track, called "Vicarious" and released officially on April 17th to radio, which means it will leak out about a week or two prior to that. So, any day now, really.

Personally, I'd prefer Adam to be at the top of his game than I would Maynard

....and after listening to Parabol and Parabola a few times over the last week or so, I'm not so sure about that comment. Maynard is brilliant on those songs, and even though the guitar work is amazing, he's easily as good. I hope that they're both as good on this album anyway...

At least it's less than a month to wait now.

Not wishing to sound overly naughty, but it just wouldn't surprise me if you were to go a-Torrent-searching and found the album right now. It wouldn't surprise me at all...

Not that I would, of course...

I mean, I'm gonna buy the damn thing anyway...

Me, too. That's not even up for debate. For Tool, there is a serious emphasis on the experience of the artwork as well as the music.

14:07 / 05.04.06
And anyway, it could just be, for example, a bloke with an acoustic singing about monkeys.

Ah well. It'll be more exciting if I wait for the day.

18:55 / 05.04.06
the album hasn't leaked, any torrents you see are fake.

It's a long album, so I would imagine the real release will be about 80 MB anyway.

Although on reflection, the guy singing about monkeys was actually pretty smart...

Well, the single "Vicarious" leaked. I don't know why but it's freely downloadable in the full uncompressed wave format from the Zomba servers. Anyway I'm sure the mp3 will be out and about if it hasn't already.

I have to say, this song is far better than anything off Lateralus as far as I'm concerned. The Lyrics are very poignant and we can all relate to them, I don't wanna spoil it for anyone who wants a fresh listen but I will say I'm super excited about the direction of the album and just how good this band is.

Guitar riff sounds oddly like Schism's riff. Liking the really hard bit at the end. Will comment further and use pronouns and full sentences.

Listen to it a few times for it to sink in, I noticed quite a few different things on successive listens, for me I liked it more and more the more I listened to it.

09:37 / 15.04.06
I found the track but it was a torrent file and I couldn't play it, can anyone pm me or e-mail me a version that I can play in media player?

10:14 / 15.04.06
Got it in the end, after installing a torrent client.

After listening to it once, I liked it, but I doubt it'll be my fave track. It seems like it alternated between the verse and bridge right up until the end, then it finally hit the chorus, (which was really amazing, don't get me wrong.) and I'd have preferred it if it had hit the chorus a couple more times instead of letting it out just the once inside the final minute. Saying that though, it is only my first listen, and I'm sure it'll grow on me. The ending was Tool at their best though, so that was great to hear, (and a huge relief after all this waiting.) and I'll go back and listen to it a few more times, obviously.

It does seem like it has the same thing that bugged me about Schism though, where the best bit only played once, and briefly, but yeah, still good stuff.

...always gotta have your whiners I guess.

edit > ahhhh! Haha! It's the first track on the album, that explains it. It's the intro song, no wonder it plays like that. I really cannot wait until May the 2nd now, and hearing this has made the wait so much worse.

Piracy is bad. But it it wasn't you'd go to torrent spy.

17:38 / 19.04.06
Jesus. Jesus Christ!

Erm....I can't believe that. If it is the real thing I'm not bothered at all about downloading it, because I'm definitely buying it on the 2nd aswell anyway. For people that are just after downloading that though........how could you!

Oh shit.....I still feel bad.

17:43 / 19.04.06
Is the downloading doing anything for anybody? Mine ain't moving.

Mine is. >.> (the top one on the list.)

I don't believe I'm doing this..

Nevermind, I got an alternate from filemp3.org that is solely mp3.

18:39 / 19.04.06
Fucking amazing so far. So ambient at times, so bone-crushing at other times.

---
20:14 / 19.04.06
I tried downloading it twice. 1 torrent was m4a or something and when I got the codecs it wouldn't work, and the 2nd was just a fake recording of something else. Matt, is there any way that you could wrap the songs up for me and e-mail me them? After registering at that site you mentioned it said that I couldn't download stuff too. I'll try a few more times at other places anyway.

matthew.
20:16 / 19.04.06
Why not convert the weird files? I'll hunt for you.

---
20:17 / 19.04.06
Oh, I just deleted it all because the codecs totally messed up.
