Actually, I forgot about buying second hand comics in that response didn't I? The difference there is that at least someone once bought the actual copy you've got your hands on. You can't buy a single copy then pass it on second hand to multiple people, which is exactly what BitTorrent distributors are doing.

I understand that an author gets a royalty whenever their books are checked out of the library. As for reading them in-store, I'm not sure that's regarded as a legitimate way to indulge, either: just a couple of weeks ago someone was politely asked to leave Forbidden Planet in Croydon because they'd just been stood there working their way through the monthly issues.

i don't know about the UK, but in the US there's definitely no royalties paid for library use.
