Aint it Cool News loves THE OTHER SIDE!

"THE OTHER SIDE is the sleeper comic of the year...Jason Aaron has thrown out a comic that even seasoned pros would be proud to have their name on...Cameron Stewart's art is actually almost a textbook of what good art should be."

Full review here.

I feel kind of bad bumping this thread all the time but screw it.

Anyone who wants to see a picture of me in Vietnam, brandishing an AK-47, check out the latest issue of Wizard Magazine, which has a 2-page spread on The Other Side.

Also next issue out next Wednesday, Nov 1!

I'd forgotten what it was like to buy comics that come out every month. Hot damn!

Just read the 1st issue. I liked it. Not as good as the "hype"built up by Cam on this thread but I'll be back for the rest of the series. Definitely an intense read and the art is spectacular.

Sorry, I'll try to be less enthusiastic about the comic I'm really proud of and want you to read...

Really, I was sold before I even read it 'cause I like your art. Was skeptical of a "war" comic but this is a different beast altogether from what I can gather. You have every right to be proud. I'll try and curb my on-screen sarcasm.

#2 went on sale today, though I've heard of some shops not receiving their copies, which sucks.

Anyone who bought it, sound off like you got a pair!

Got mine. My primary thoughts on both issues of this so far are a) that they're fucking gorgeous, and b) it's more like a metaphysical road movie through the emotions of war than a 'war comic'. More later, promise, but yeah, fucking gorgeous as a comic.

The presence of the jawless jarhead is something I think is best described as 'special'. It adds something very interesting, with the dead as his tormentors and possibly only friends.

And in issue 2 we have an obligatorily re-purposed anecdote from Michael Herr's Crossroads.

More later.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

I like the continued presence of era-specific comics in the backgrounds and the conversation -- nice implications about propaganda and the way war is portrayed to those outside of war. The Haunted Tank moment was especially good, apropos of the character's situation. I like that the reality/insanity issue isn't addressed properly, it's just this vague ambiguity about whether his "best buds" are illusions or actually haunting him.

Beautiful artwork, very clean - Manhattan Guardian was good, Cameron, but you've picked up some new (intangible) quality for this one. Maybe it's just the passion you bring to the series, I don't know. Want to talk about what's changed about your art/process betwixt these series? Your evolution is subtle but noticeable.

I sometimes wonder if the presence of the dead AND the whispering rifle aren't a bit overkill, but I can't decide which I prefer.

The pig moment was, uh, special. I'm uncertain how I feel about it.

The Vietnamese character feels a little underdeveloped, although I loved the sequence with him and the tigers. I find his narration and situation are a little flat in comparison to the American; there's not enough specific detail going on? I think this might be solved by the time they meet up. If they meet up.

Cameron, if your Halloween costume was the pinnacle of awesome the artwork on this series is awesome shot into space.

This is one of the books I look forward to reading more then most others in my sack every week. This book takes at least twice as long to get through then anything out there, in part due to the prose, but I spend half the time just looking at the pictures, then realizing there is text.

How long is this scheduled to run Cam?

Yeah this is real nice. Very different from most things that come out monthly. It's not saying anything overly new or revealing, but it's really strong distinctive writing, and exceptionally satisfying artwork. You should be proud of yourself, and I'm sure you are.

Wow. Despite there being about twice as much competition as usual this week, this comic easily wins the prize for the most attractive cover of the week -- and what's on the inside ain't half-bad either. I honestly just started picking this up on a whim for Mr. Stewart's art, but top to bottom this mini's been wonderful -- the dialogue's razor-sharp, the art is everything I'd hoped for and more, and the coloring is gorgeous. And I'm dead crazy about the Jawless Jarhead -- a great visual.

Only just got issue 2, but yeah, it's excellent. Lovely job on the art, Cameron- and Aaron's writing's pretty shit-hot too. Yes, the splash with the tigers is awesome.

Just found this, too.

Looks like you're getting yourself some good press, Mr Stewart. And it's well-deserved.

I was pretty fucking excited by this way back at the beginning of the thread, and now it's here and is starting to take shape, I have to say I'm not at all disappointed.

(Incidentally, the first place I looked for this today had sold out. I hope that means a ton of people bought it, rather than they just didn't order enough).

It's great. I love the jawless ghost (especially the way he looks simultaneously like a timeless, iconic image like you'd get on a metal album, and like a brand-new, never-before-seen image. He's got a kind of EC Comics quality to him which I also love) and the talking rifle. I love the split narrative. And I love that the American protagonist didn't come off in issue 1 as being particularly likeable. I've grown to like him now, but I think he's earned that, rather than having it assumed.

The NVA half of the story is still putting me in mind of The Sorrow Of War, but that's probably just because it's the only account I've ever read of the war from that side. And the comparison is meant to be complimentary.

Yeah, you guys are doing a great job, and I'll certainly be buying the rest.

Stoats: He's got a kind of EC Comics quality to him which I also love

The whole series has an EC Comics vibe and I think that's one of the characteristics that makes it work so well.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. THE OTHER SIDE has been a labor of love for Cameron and I for quite a while now, and it's great to see it now generating such a strong response.

In THE ONION's review of issue #1 (which they rated A-), they said, "Writer Jason Aaron, a newcomer, has a gift for profanity and violent extremes," which I figure is about the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me. They also said, "Cameron Stewart's clean, expressive art has a terrifying war-is-hell immediacy."

If you guys liked Cameron's tiger splash from issue #2, wait 'til you see the splash page from #3. Wow.

Luvverly.

Keep up the good work, guys, The Other Side rocks (and is one of the few comics I'm still buying monthly, given my shit cash situation).

I'll have more to say on the story once we get a bit further on, but so far it's looking like what I end up saying will be very complimentary.

Late for the party for issue 2 (mail order comics and lags on shipping) but issue 2 was even better than the first one. The ghost soldier and talking gun bits are cool and staring down 4 tigers with just an AK-47? Brilliant. Ready for more.

I'm with the Stoat in that I'll have more to say when the run is a bit further in. Suffice to say though that I'm loving it so far and I'm excited to have more issues on the way. It runs right alongside ASS in the must buy stakes.

That cover is the business, Cam. I've seen you potter about drawingboard.org and I'd love it if you could post something or other in either of the main Creation art threads.

It's goood, from my initial read-through. I wasn't really in the headspace to suckle fully at its teat, but when I get home from work tonight I'll give myself some alone time with THE OTHER SIDE.
