hehe, I was just going to post the link to the Engine thread where you posted these.

oh my... seriously. I'm speachless. wonder how you could even get BETTER. every pic is so lively and the panels so three-dimensional. I dunno, it's just powerfull stuff. wish there was a B&W wordless version for this series as well.

nice one, man. I'll get this. and if SEAGUY 2 really does get done we wonder how beautifull it'll look.

oh, and will bitchslap me if I say you're like the lovechild of Jack Davis, Darrick Robertson and Phillip Bond [plus others I can't put my finger on right now]?

just the stupid comparison me here.

Good stuff Cam. Are you happy with how it looks coloured?

I haven't actually seen the colours yet, but they are being handled by Dave (NEXTWave) McCaig, probably my favourite colourist in the biz right now, so I'm sure I'll have zero complaint.

Holy string of deleted expletives, Bat-Cam. Those are *beautiful* and blew me away when I saw 'em over on the Engine (during the wonderfully madcap Chip Zdarsky day, for those of you playing at home).

Yeah, so, I'm buying this. Definitely.

Ooh, nice. I'll be buying this- I love your art, Cameron, and I have a strange fascination with Vietnam stories (as well as being a big horror fan) so yeah, I'll be there on release day or thereabouts with money I should probably be spending on food.

There's an inter view with Jason Aaron over at the Wizard site that's worth reading.

Jesus Cam, this is incredible.

Ech. I don't want to come of as fawning, but your art has always appealed to me a great deal, and this stuff really takes the biscuit. Everything is so solid and there. There's story and emotion dripping off every panel.
Not a war comic fan, but this is top of my list by quite a margin. You've exceeded yourself and then some here, if the writing's even half as good then it's gonna be something special.

Coupla things:

Firstly, the CBR link on the third post in this thread has a colourised version of your first page there. Was that always there? Is that the final colour?

Also, you said you were replacing that last chopper-swarm picture. Is that there as placeholder or have you guys decided to go with that after all?

Hey iamus, thanks very much for the kind words!

>>>if the writing's even half as good then it's gonna be something special<<<

As I've said before, my biggest concern with working on this book was doing the script justice. It's a fantastic piece of writing, everyone who's read it has been completely captivated. This is a script that came to DC in the mail, unsolicited, and on its strength Aaron now has two series at Vertigo. I wouldn't have invested so much of myself in this if I didn't wholly believe in the brilliance of the story. I've worked with Grant Morrison, Ed Brubaker, Pete Milligan, Mike Mignola, Brian Azzarello, Joss Whedon - a veritable Who's Who of the best writers in comics - and this is easily one of the very best scripts I've drawn.

I realize that I'm turning the dial on the Hype Machine to "Mark Millar" setting but seriously, this is some really great shit.

Regarding the coloured version of the first page - DC asked me to whip up a quickie colour version so they could include it in the slide show at the Vertigo Panel at the New York Comic Con in February, and that's what you see on CBR. The final colour will probably be similar, but better.

The image of the choppers soaring over the rice paddy is NOT in the final book, it's still an unused page.

Thanks again for the encouragement!

I didn't think they'd let the cat out this early, but the cover for #2 is up on Newsarama:

As well as another interview with Jason.

Are you doing all the colouring as well, Cameron?

Nope, it's Dave McCaig, who currently colours NEXTwave and many others.

Ah, I wasn't sure because on the preview there you'd just got credited with "art" which always throws me a bit. But by god, those colours really are great, very complimentary to yr inks (which also look like yr doing lots of new things, little things which really give of an absolutely amazing sense of feeling, fitting with what's happening in every panel and highlighting key things. They're not just framed pictures like what happens in far too many comics I see so before I get embarassed and shy I say YAY!) Even from just the thumbnail previews every page looked very distinct with it's own palette almost and all the different tones seemed very apt.

I very much like the look of this!

Read the first issue last night. Scattered thoughts. I hope this sells well, it's got some bold artistry to it.

Cartoony style works much better than I thought it might, says more. Tone is different than any Vietnam narrative I can think of, something dark-fantasy about it with the inglorious-but-dignified angry-dead grotesquerie that's so omnipresent.

Cartoony feeling extends to the script, with certain reductive tropes in place (Demoniac Ermy Instructor, peacefully zen-fatalistic Asians, gold watch), but it's generally in a positive sense, reductive/exaggerated to accentuate subtle relationships between ideas, in the real tradition of cartooning. A lot of information is passed by the reader over a single issue. Vo Dai's story feels two-dimensional to me, but I'm still eager to see more.

Cameron doing his best work, complemented by Dave McCaig being nothing short of brilliant. McCaig's choices are always bold, always work.

My primary emotional pictures these days of the Vietnam War come through Michael Herr's 'Dispatches'. (I imagine a large percentage of Americans get their popular notions of the war from echoes of that book, in Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now.)

The impression Herr's book gave me was that our relationship to war is the same as our relationship to the dead. I get the same feeling out of this comic.

Eager to see the next.

Ooh, something to buy on Saturday! Looking forward to it. That last panel up there, CS, do I detect a bit of a Kev O'Neill influence creeping in?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
22:35 / 05.10.06
This was a surprise - I hadn't quite connected it was coming out this week but there it was, picked it up and the comic blew me away. It suffers a little bit from being first-issue set up, but still manages to convey the characters without being too bogged down. The juxtaposition idea works well. I'm not sure how I feel about the dead men and the gun.

The opening sequence and how it relates to the main character's experience is solid, a very good move.

Cam's art is smooth, and the inks on top are crisp. I'm impressed and looking forward to #2.

Nice quick article on Cameron in the New York Times a couple of days ago. This comes on top of that huge article about Manhattan Guardian last year, they cannot get enough of him.

Nice work Cam. The art on this was excellent, really solid stuff. I thought the visions Bill has are terrific - creepy as any thing. The writing was great too. I'm looking forward to the next issue.

Well, of course, the old dilemma exists...if people don't buy the comics, will there even be a trade to wait for?

Brian Wood says:

THIS week, make sure you buy THE OTHER SIDE #1 (Vertigo). This gets my Highest Personal Recommendation. I read the proposal years ago, read the first script, read an advance copy of the first issue... and it keeps getting better each time. The first issue is really dense, it really delivers. It's gonna hit big, and I feel it's worth reading monthly."

I gotta say this was one of my fav books I picked up on my last trip to the shop.

For one thing, the writing and artwork work so well together creating a very dense story, so it takes a while to read, which I appreciate in these modern days of comics that i breeze through in 4 minutes.

This is definately going to be part of my monthly haul, especially since with all the other new stuff coming out my comics budget is going to be high for a while anyway.

An excellent book, well worth the cover price.
