Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Gifted...Dangerous...Unstoppable..what was the name of Emma's arc? I'm waiting for the trades on this one because they is so shiny. But Joss needs to put down the adjectival thesaurus.

Torn.

Found this to be quite hilarious. Colossus's attempt at a joke was up there in comedic moments of '06. And the exchange between Brand and Scott at the end was worth the price of admission.

Found myself rooting for Agent Brand. Scott's as keen as ever.

Mayhaps the destruction of Breakworld entails the obliteration of their warlike culture?

Another great episode of The Kitty Pryde Show, with your host, Kitty Pryde.

even more than usual. It's been clear enough from his earlier work that who he'd really like to be, rather than a terribly dissipated trekkie, is a spunky teenage valley girl what gets to turn the hott, muscley boys down because theyt are so superficial, and have no emotional intel;ligence. And up to a point it's fair enough; I don't know how I'd feel if I was trapped in Joss Whedon's (lucrative, but still ... ) nightmare world, but best guess is, not terribly good.

But he's been wheeling out this same, sorry old trope for over a decade now, and I honestly think, enough is enough.

And all this crap to do with outer space is simply that; crap. The material to do with SWORD will be dropped from X-continuity faster than you can say 'I've stopped reading this' the second JW removes his arse from the blocked nose and terrified eyes of the franchise.

Joss needs to put down the adjectival thesaurus.

Indeed. A thesaurus where "gifted", "dangerous" and "unstoppable" are synonyms can't be very good. Let's hope he got a better one for christmas!

I think Whedon has done an okay job on all 3 of his completed arcs. there were a few really crappy occurences in them, but he recovered. What really bothers me is that hes only brought a few new things to the title, and just reproduced other storylines and added to them a little, mostly Morrison's work.

nevertheless, im still looking forward to the rest of Unstoppable, which looks bloody good.

Meh. This last one was probably confirmation that it's fully losing me. There's something close to surreal about this series' pace that makes a really odd impact on the reading experience, by which I mean Marvel Are Fuckwits, naturally.

Its value by now seems to come down to the occasional good character moment - and that, Whedon rocks with - but it's just lost all Oomph; all the rush that'd be needed to make the plot, which ought to depend more on rythm than originality, seeing as, hmm, it doesn't have that much of the second, is absent.

Getting dull.

true, but he's recovered before with AXM, im just holding out for a second recovery.

Maybe so, but then, he hasn't, I feel, dipped as low before.

When do you think he recovered? I think he's slowly been getting worse since about issue 7 and I've mainly been staying for the art and a strange sense of curiosity over how Colossus breaks the Breakworld.

i think he did well with the first third or two of Torn. it was original, and it kept its action/dialogue ratio similar, and the rythm of the arc was good.

I believe the new issue is out today, wherein we find out what Plan B is (i.e. the X-Men not instantly dying when their ship is blown up in space).

Much love for the green-haired S.W.O.R.D. lady (love the silly SHIELD-like name) and her scabbard/sword-shaped spaceship. Curious to see where this goes, especially since Whedon, in showing how eeeevil the rulers of Ord's planet are, clearly wants us as the audience to see them get their comeuppance courtesty of Piotr and his X-buddies. And Cassandra is still lurking inside Hisako (probably, anyway).... and Scott has no optic blasts, just scruffy beard and new Dirty Harry mixed with Mr. Rogers attitude.

ah! thanks, i'll have to check that out. how long's it been since the last issue? 4-5 weeks?

although, whedon seems to have just recycled a lot of morrison's work up to the current arc. theres been Nova, the super-sentinel, hes retconned a little of it as well. did anyone else notice the similarities between the look of Miss Dwyer of the Outer Church and Danger? i thought that was a little weird.

Plenty of nice, clever, little moments throughout. Which is what Astonishing is best at.

I know it's been said to death but you can't have a series this slowly paced released at such a slow pace anyway.
What even happened in this issue? They landed on the planet? That should be like one pannel. Two at most.

I mean, i love the character moments, but wouldn't that be more intresting in the context of an adventure filled story?

new ish out tomorrow -- I find myself almost just wanting to fast-forward to the end where Colossus destroys the Breakworld somehow.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
19:21 / 01.05.07
I am finding that Whedon's x-iness reads much better in chunks rather than individual issues; I have no qualms about "waiting for the trade" because in this particular instance I know that I'm going to get far more enjoyment out of it. There are certainly weak spots - the end of the Hellfire Club engagement when SWORD zaps them all into space and things break down a bit stands out - but there's lots of good stuff as well.

I can see where the problems with Kitty come up, certainly, but he's had enough "good moments" with her - I'm thinking of her descending through hot magma, feeling old, it felt more in tune with the "grown up Kitty" of later Excalibur and felt like Kitty was actually allowed to have an arc again.

I do wish it could be a new arc. Just a bit.

It's a bit like turning every Batman story into one where he realizes he can't go it alone and likes having kids in combat gear around.

SPOOOILLERS!!!!

You have been

warned.

Interesting issue...good interaction between Scott and Emma, and I like the idea that Peter's 'destruciton' of the Breakworld could be interpreted another way.

Although I don't think we need anymore 'wow, Kitty and Peter are really gonna have teh sex!!!1!!! isn't that awesome/cute/adorable!?!?' scenes.

One weird thing: I don't think I'm reading this wrong, but Agent Brand really does...the sexy thing with Beast/Hank?? I guess Joss was going for the 'they can't stand each other; they squabble intensely so they must be attracted to each other' thing.

also, Emma's line about wearing a more S&M outfit if Scott was going to be a 'submissive' was sort of unintentionally funny, since all her outfits (including the current Cassaday-designed number) are very S&M anyway.

I very much doubt it, for a number of reasons. Any good scout knows that the best way to keep warm is direct skin-to-skin contact. This probably counts double if the other party is covered in fur and very large.

Haus you make yiff sound irresistable!

Who's tapped to go after Whedon? Or does the book fold with this arc?

Also, has it ever stepped back up to the level of the first few issues?

The Falcon

I'd say so, yes. The first arc of the second volume (from #13) is probably the best the book's been, in my humble.

22:39 / 05.05.07
Yeah, but Beast's 'oh. my' and the timing of the panels seemed to indicate some sort of innuendo/hanky-panky was going on there. (or is this just my desire to see ol' Hank get some action after Trish Tilbey dumped him years ago in the Morrison run?)

Marvel has stated they will continue Astonishing with a new creative team but have not yet announced that team.

Although I don't think we need anymore 'wow, Kitty and Peter are really gonna have teh sex!!!1!!! isn't that awesome/cute/adorable!?!?' scenes.

If you don't mind them having been written one-handed, apparently, then I suppose not.

Why am I still reading this series? I don't do it every month, or anything, but still, what's wrong with me?

The Falcon
22:50 / 05.05.07
I really don't know, Alex. You haven't liked any superhero comic except that Batman text issue to the extent you'd share it (in the last six months?), so maybe you should just read Batman? Maybe newuniversal, but that last one was a bit guff.

finder, I think 'Oh. My.' is responsive to naked lady. For skin-to-skin. Which may be a bit saucy in the end, but I expect we'll just have to wait to find out, won't we?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
10:29 / 06.05.07
I find myself enjoying this, but really did we need the whole 'Aaaah, but maybe the prophecy of Colossus breaking everything just means overthrowing the Government, have I shown you my Tarot set, death doesn't actually mean physical death you know' moment? I really hope that they do destroy the planet now, just for that. But many nice moments.

I suspect that the next arc will involve going back to the school to find Cassandra Nova has taken everything over again. Does anyone know whether Joss is staying on after this arc finishes? I've liked what he's been doing with Scott and Emma and it would be nice to see that continued with, especially if it's decided that they don't need to undo what Emma did to him in order to give him back the blasty powers. I like Cyclops blasty powers. Blasty!

"I suspect that the next arc will involve going back to the school to find Cassandra Nova has taken everything over again."

Err, how?

The idea of Cass got purged from Emma at the last arc. The real Cass is still locked up, yes? (As opposed to being Ernst... grrr...)

And yeah, this is Whedon's last arc.

The Falcon
17:21 / 06.05.07
There was some confusion, I think, as to whether Cassie N. had chucked herself into Hisako(?) in #18, wasn't there?

The Falcon

And Hisako is in space, with the team.
