I've had my eye on this thread for a while now but have been leery of posting to it.

However, here are a few things; I think the best advice is to make a one egg per person mushroom omlette, then you have something lining your stomach. Empty stomachs will make you sick, guys. A little bit of tabasco is good too.

Bathe as you come up, this also helps with the sick and the kind of pre-flight nerves some people get. It's a cool way to ease you in to things.

I think fruit juice is unwise unless you wanted to calm yourself down a bit. Particularly on acid.

Grow kits: Those little kits are cool, but if you get a spore print and a cheap aquarium and be VIGILANT with sterility you'll have much better results. Much. Happy to converse about this via PM if anyone wants to.

not sure about Tez's advice to take them on an empty stomach.

I should point out that I stated that taking shrooms on a full stomach (i.e. after a heavy meal) was inadvisable. I did not actually advocate taking them on an empty stomach.

On the growkit subject, they are very easy to do, and can yield good results. Sterility is important, as is the ability to accurately maintain the humidity and temperature.
These guys offer a reasonable little setup, plus a free brick to start you off.

Quite right Tez, I misread.

Some people above have suggested they like indoors, a bath to ease the nausea and whatnot. I often feel the need for space when I'm high.
Great times a few summers ago, eating some mushrooms and then catching a train to Cassiobury Park in Hertfordshire. Wandering in the woods, following the canal and lying in the sun in the long grass. I remember this intense sense of belonging. For want of a better cliche... of getting back to nature.
Where do you like experiencing altered states?

The first time I did mushrooms I made the absolutely brilliant decision to watch "Eraserhead" while I came up.

Good grief! That film freaked the crap out of me and I was sober, how the hell did you make it through?

Dear tentative droppers of teh LSD,

Eraserhead on the screen, Cradle of Filth on your iTunes, Ann Geddes on your wall, the company of that acquaintance you've never really trusted, a handful of hallucinogens and when those pretty wavey lines go sort of jagged and eye pokey you have only yourselves to blame.

Shrug.

(That said you poor, poor man).

Is making mushroom tea an effective way to enjoy mushrooms for a first-time user? Does adding sugar diminish the potency of the hallucination?

tea is my favorite way to ingest them, but be warned that it can cause them to come on considerably quicker (and all-at-once-er) than just eating dried mushrooms.

last time i had tea was a couple years back, and I started by drinking 3.5g of mushrooms that had steeped for over an hour. I then proceeded to put a sonic youth tape into the boombox in the bathroom and took a shower. 10 minutes later, I stepped into the kitchen dripping wet and wrapped in a towel and proceeded to explain to all of my housemates how sonic youth was a pure reflection of being a neutral participant in the apocalypse, whereas jane's addiction was a reflection of the same apocalypse, but was a report constructed after the fact relying on mythology.

things got considerably weirder very quick, leading to me finding the largest tree in town and chewing bark off of it, and eventually returning home and sitting in the darkest corner of my lawn very quietly explaining to one of my roommates that while I knew that there was a thing called the sun in the sky, I had forgotten what the sun was, and that I had made peace with the fact that it would never return from where-ever it had gone a few hours earlier.

anyway, that was a total tangent. tea is good/quick-hitting, just don't actually boil the mushrooms. treat it like green tea, taking the water off the stove when it's just a bit short of boiling, and then pour over the mushrooms and steep as long as you can (i usually steeped for a couple hours the day before and then poured the whole mixture into a container and kept it in the fridge for a day or two).

lastly, a note to any inexperienced sitters: don't keep requesting running commentary of what the tripper's experiencing. unless you've both decided beforehand to do some serious psychonautic research in the name of science, it's fucking irritating.

edit: sugar shouldn't affect anything.

Good, because I take my tea with a good amount of sugar. Thanks for the info, and does tea shorten the effect at all or is it just quicker-hitting than chewing?

I'm probably going to want to do something artistic during the hallucination, if that's possible.

I'm probably going to trip a few times this year before the criminalize all mushroomy material (except sporebricks maybe).

Thanks to the media-furore surrounding the accidental death of a young french tourist last year*, the government of my formerly tolerant country has decided to ban (along with the previously dried form) fresh mushrooms somewhere this year.

I think it's sad that the government report on the health-risks (psychical and physical) on mushrooms was made in a time of anti-mushroom sentiment, and grossly overstates the dangers of the drug.

I've tripped quite a few times, with only one partially bad trip experienced.

I've felt the earth breathe, I saw rolled joints fall from the trees (and smoked 'em with my friend, as we both still swear by), I thought I was John the Baptist. Trapped in junglebook. Stuck in a pre-historic village. I laughed till I cried and cried till I laughed. Best of all, I remember it all to this day.

I got a lot from this drug, more than any other I 've even tried (save maybe mdma), and I find it very disconcerting that the death of one person, however tragic, has been used to paint the entire subject of psylocybine in an extremely negative light. Where is the outcry with regards to alcohol and the deaths it causes annually?

That being said, there are dangers attached to the use of any drug, and one could best proceed with a modicum of caution (not paranoia though). Setting and trusted friends are perhaps most important I feel.

*
The victim was a french girl of about 17, who fell/jumped off of a bridge in Amsterdam while under the influence of psylocybine. Because the drug was sold over the counter to someone not yet of the legal age, this sparked a furore, with an international twist, seeing as the parents' blamed the drug (and dutch drug policy) for the death of their daughter.

It later turned out that the girl had been experiencing heavy bouts of depression and anxiety long before she ever tried the drug. The mushrooms probably intensified the personal problems she'd been having, which is the normal mode of things. Mushrooms and other hallucinogenics can cause personal problems to be magnified a great deal, become visceral, visual and terrifying. However, if this girl had been somewhere with friends in a less threatening environment than the streets of Amsterdam in the middle of the night, things might just as well have turned out alright.

i don't find that tea affects the overall duration of the "plateau", it just decreases the coming up by a bit. i like this because it minimizes the stomach cramps (for me) and the "uh, guys... things are getting kind of weird" anxiety. i'm sure some will disagree; you're really just going to have to experiment.

I'm probably going to want to do something artistic during the hallucination, if that's possible.

the advice early on in this thread about following your instincts in terms of activities was really good. by all means, have paints or a notebook or some instruments around, but try not to put yourself into a place where you're thinking "oh, i'm in an altered state, i have to go do x and y because it seemed like a good idea when i was sober."

You may want to look through Stan Grof's 'LSD Psychotherapy' for some interesting descriptions of recurrent cycles -- for example, giddiness-fear-irritability is one pattern that seems to come up a lot. If you're going to keep yapping on and on about your incredibly dull drug visions, people around you may become quite irritable. It would be a joy if somebody took drugs and was hit by a sudden impulse to shut up and sit quietly in the corner, reading a good book.

I tried mushrooms last night, and despite all the great advice in this thread regarding tea, I decided to eat them instead.

About an hour after eating the mushrooms, they started to affect me; my sense of touch was incredibly sensitive, and my mouth felt much larger than it really was. After eating some food, I stared at a Pokemon card depicting Dragonair for a while. After what seemed to be hours, I stared at a picture of a tye-dye t-shirt on the box of a tye-dye set.

In addition to words moving around, I saw them in three dimensions, as well as colors. Sound was tangible, and I suppose I should mention that colors seemed to be capable of speech.

After staring at things, I watched the Addams Family, and proceeded to explain that the children interacting with Uncle Fester symbolised the loss of innocence as one transcends youth, and the adults in the film were all sadomasochistic.

Everything seemed to relate to Poe's literary world, and the concept of ultimate nonbeing implying ultimate fear. This theme seemed to emerge with the character Cousin It in the Addams Family, the black screen of my friend's MP3 player, and several other things. I explained this on paper, and on the other side, for whatever reason, I wrote the word "FUCK."

but try not to put yourself into a place where you're thinking "oh, i'm in an altered state, i have to go do x and y because it seemed like a good idea when i was sober."

That was amazing advice, though I do regret not building a deck of Pokemon cards prior to me taking the mushrooms. Anyway, the trip didn’t really have any negative aspects, other than the fact that I was freezing cold for a lot of it.

I suppose it would be a good idea to have a book of Escher drawings handy next time?

And a blanket. Lots of people do tend to get chilly on 'shrooms.

Yes, I was freezing cold for the first few hours, or what I thought was the first few hours.
