Yeah, I don't know what you want to have happen really. True, some of what's being reported sounds pretty out-there, but if you do teh hmadjyykx long enough then positively bizarre stuff will occur in your vicinity.

I'm all for experiential discussions but I've got my reservations about the thread. I don't really need magic weirdshit to remind me that the Universe is big and strange, Astronomy Photo of the Day does that just fine) and I'm unconvinced that reporting this kind of thing is always a great idea. It can sort of turn into... titillation, I guess... chasing after the shiny things while the stuff that's really important gets sidelined. Magic isn't about weird shit happening or spooky people showing up behind your shoulder. It's about results. (And I'm not saying anything about the posters to this particular thread, but I would say that this kind of thing has a tendancy to attract attention-seekers. Not everyone who posts to a thread like that is going to be telling the whole truth about their experiences.)

So yeah, reservations, but I don't know that it's a mod issue, or even a go down and yell at everyone in my capacity as a private individual issue.

Well I think you should post that to the thread. It's very relevant.

I think this great thread on how and where you consume music is not really getting the love it needs.

Re: the Weird Zone thread. The thread starter has specifcally asked for no debunking which I think is fair enough. Other people's anecdotes are always that weird mix of fascinating and unconvincing. It's one of the reasons that chatting about magic on the internet is a bit ineffectual unless you've had an experience like that happen to you, other people's accounts are hard to accept. One of the reasons I don't tend to talk directly about "weird shit that has happened to me" is precisely this.

True dat. I don't really have any major objections to the thread or the posts in it thus far, but my reservations, insofar as I have any, would be creating the imprsssion that this is what magical practice is. To me, it's much more about deeper engagement with practises and disciplines over a long period of time, intergrating them and their lessons than just spookywow! stuff. Thus Mordant's objections in the "Core of Your Magic" thread. I think.

Well, that makes it sound a bit as though the reason people don't accept other people's accounts is because they haven't had weird things happen to them. Speaking for myself, I've had plenty of weird things happen to me, and while I think I can understand that people might have experiences which seem very striking to them, it doesn't mean that I agree with their explanations of those events. A no-debunking rule seems a little off to me. Can't there be an option for acknowledging each person's right to frame or understand experiences in their own way? A no-debunking restriction seems to me to be saying that I can't give a version of something that happened unless I imply or state a non-material or 'weird' explanation for it. Maybe I'm misreading the request? Is it just a request to be able to talk about things without feeling picked on?

Yes I think it probably is. It's 'I have a right to believe this was a weird experience, without you telling me it was actually a weather balloon.'

But I don't think it's helpful in terms of discussion. It means the thread will just be a list.

I think it is also. I read it as "no critical commenting on others accounts" rather than a provision about offering up your own i.e. it really was a weather balloon, OF COURSE it was a coincidence, you're just projecting patterns where there none etc etc. I'll try and respond to the rest of your post later, Gourami. I am having a "weird experience" induced by not eating last night, and am about to fall over if I don't cook dinner.

Meep. Do go eat. I am 2/5 of the way through a dare to drink one of each type of beer in the house and am a bit wobbly myself (though was sober when I made my last post) so I just want you all to know I LOVE YOU.

Just to alert everyone to a new thread that's been started in Lab:

Gender and race inequality in science and its wider effects.

I think we would benefit massively from contributions to this thread from people who don't necessary hang out in the Lab much.
