Over in the discussion thread for the Temple, I said:

Off topic, but we've got this thread going in the Temple on Magical spaces and cultural signifiers and it would be nice to get some more input, especially from Headshoppy people.

And then Seth goes:

I was thinking exactly the same thing about the Quantum Physics and Magical Theory thread, which I think could do with some Lab oriented people (I know I'd certainly appreciate their perspective).

Hence this: a thread for drawing attention to other threads, basically. Sometimes a topic arises that belongs firmly in one forum but could really benefit from involvment from heads geared towards another, so here's a thread for people to wave at other fora over the fence.

So... Temple paging the Headshop (Magical spaces and cultural signifiers), and the Lab (Quantum Physics and Magical Theory).

Of course this is just a ploy to lure people into the Temple so we can give them to Dagon.

Policy paging the Temple: We're discussing a change to the forum description.

If you don't jump in and get involved you don't get to complain afterwards.

(I love the idea of this thread)

Two things, really. Hey! Look! If you haven't been checking Gathering, you might have missed the discussions for a barbegig sometime this summer. Which will also need flyers and Stuff from artistic types.

Also, I *know* that Convo has gardeners, and people who garden, and people who know about gardening and growing plants and things like that. This thread needs you! In fact it could probably just be moved over into Convo. But I think it'd be nice to see more people coming into Creation instead. So I'm paging.

Temple paging everybody. We need guinea pigs for one of our twisted schemes. Essentially, we're looking for a sort of test-case for a magical experiment: you describe a problem (need a new job, need a new flat ect.) and a small bag of mixed nuts will attempt to make it happen.

Edited to say: I'm no longer involved in this project for political reasons. As outlined in the thread, I do not wish to associate with Holocaust deniers like zoemancer. I'd suggest other people disengage too.

Also, I reckon it would be pretty cool if some of the more Headshoppy amongst us had a look at this thread and maybe added something?

Page for Grant - there's a thread about China's one-child policy, which will be in Head Shop or Switchboard. I suspect you might have encountered a fair amount about this in the supplementary reading.

Right then

Are you British?
Do you want to keep on living in something resembling a democracy?
If our government were to piss all over Magna Carta would it bother you rather a lot?
Can you write?

If you answered "yes" to all the above I suggest you get your arse over to this thread.

It seems as if Mr Tony and his pals are trying to sneak through a bill that will aloow the government to alter legislation without the consent of parliament.

Just noticed this thread in Headshop. So paging any Headshoppy types with an interest in film/Zizek/Lacan/Mulvey/Freud to The Vertigo Thread *spoilers* in FTV&T. Alot of potential for discussion I would've thought. At the moment, however, the thread ze is dead.

There's a thread for all Barbeloids with children! Or for Barbeloids with knowledge of child development!

Boboss. Yeah: you, with the adorable baby, come to this thread on Sesame Street and its new video series for babies.

Temple to HeadShop!

Or anyone else for that matter...

I would be very happy to see someone more experienced with these matters start a "race for really-not-racists" thread or similar. If no one else feels willing or able, I'll start it later tonight or tomorrow, but I'd feel weird doing so because I don't feel qualified. I'd rather start something new than top an old thread because I'm under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that the atmosphere on the board has changed enough that an old thread might not be germane.

Would it be along the lines of the famous 'But I'm on your side! or, why clever people can't be racist' thread of yore (here)? I think you're right that we could probably do with a new one, though. I don't know if I have the energy to start it - anyone?

I think I'll bump that one anyway, until a new one starts. Nobody has much energy at the mo it seems.

For those of you who don't frequent the Policy section, there's a post there titled Shadowsax: His Crimes. I think it might be a good idea for some non moderators who don't normally hang out in Policy to check it out, as it might be a test case for how we deal with banning people in the future.

Ganesh
10:40 / 17.04.06
Yeah. While I think moderators should contribute, I think it's in the interests of non-moderators to engage with the discussion too, particularly if they have strong views on ShadowSax and/or how the issue of banning posters should be handled in the future.

Goodness Gracious Meme
00:28 / 19.04.06
Came here to bump for the reasons given by the two above posters. The discussion of/with Shadowsax is one that has implications for the operation of the board as a whole, and the specific decision-making process is one, I think, that should involve as many people who are interested in contributing as possible, whatever you have to say on the issue.

So BUMP

Paging Barbelites with cable. And Comedy Central. To FTV&T.

Seth asks:

I’d be fascinated with a discussion on here that attempts to delineate how our right to be offended interacts with how deep the offence is judged to penetrate (that is, judged by the offender, the offended and observers from a range of backgrounds), to beliefs, identity, body, or some spiritual context that one has faith governs all the preceding three.

In regards to South Park: The Cartoon Wars.

Come and play!

Head Shop thread on the caste system in India, into which heady mix Howard Bloom has been added. I have a feeling that this is actually a Big Gulp with mad flavouring, but this may just be a lack of familiarity with the source texts. Would anyone like to caste their opinions in?

At the moment the key question of whether there would be a sufficient body of active contributors is moot. All those with a view, please weigh in.

I'd like to call people's attention, esp. headshoppy types, to a couple of threads going on in Art, Fashion & Design.

First, one for which I feel just a wee bit responsible* is the "detournement" thread about a pair of limited edition Adidas sneakers designed by Barry McGee, an artist who is part Chinese. The thread explores questions about whether his "Ray Fong" image reinforces racist stereotypes or is playing with, possibly subverting them? Is it legitimate to raise such questions, etc.? It's worth a look and more responses, I think.

Second, our beloved leader Tom Coates started a thread about the rise (?) of the semi-naked male body in advertising--"The 80s, Athena, and the Homoerotic Poster"**--which raises some very interesting questions. am464 posted a link to a really cool photo-essay of sorts about the semeiotics of the male gaze, and I have also contributed a link to some excerpts from an interesting article by Susan Bordo about the history of the male body as "beautiful object" (complete with more half naked men). But it's just getting going, and I'd like to hear more people's thoughts.

*(Originally this thread was posted in Headshop but I raised questions both about the initial wording of the summary, etc., and its placement in the Headshop, realizing that AD&F is less trafficked, which is unfortunate. So! Please go give it, and Tom's thread, some energy.)

**I was going to speculate about who is barbelith's official "homoerotic poster" but thought I'd leave that task to others...
