I'd like to call people's attention, esp. headshoppy types, to a couple of threads going on in Art, Fashion & Design.
First, one for which I feel just a wee bit responsible* is the "detournement" thread about a pair of limited edition Adidas sneakers designed by Barry McGee, an artist who is part Chinese. The thread explores questions about whether his "Ray Fong" image reinforces racist stereotypes or is playing with, possibly subverting them? Is it legitimate to raise such questions, etc.? It's worth a look and more responses, I think.
Second, our beloved leader Tom Coates started a thread about the rise (?) of the semi-naked male body in advertising--"The 80s, Athena, and the Homoerotic Poster"**--which raises some very interesting questions. am464 posted a link to a really cool photo-essay of sorts about the semeiotics of the male gaze, and I have also contributed a link to some excerpts from an interesting article by Susan Bordo about the history of the male body as "beautiful object" (complete with more half naked men). But it's just getting going, and I'd like to hear more people's thoughts.
*(Originally this thread was posted in Headshop but I raised questions both about the initial wording of the summary, etc., and its placement in the Headshop, realizing that AD&F is less trafficked, which is unfortunate. So! Please go give it, and Tom's thread, some energy.)
**I was going to speculate about who is barbelith's official "homoerotic poster" but thought I'd leave that task to others... |
