Sweet Baby Jesus, the more I think about this list idea the more I really really never want to see it happen. 1) contex 2) never going to be exhaustive because people are so wonderfully imaginative when it comes to thinking up utterly foul names for other people, 3) HORRIBLE MONOLITHIC WODGE OF URRGHHH IN WIKI.

I'm going to give up, actually, because Nina, Bed Head and Mordant have all said it far better than I did, or ever could. I'll just stick around to make up the numbers, if I may.

If necessary, you could tack on a disclaimer at the end.

This is by no means an exhaustive list...

Yeah. Nina, Stoatie, Bedhead, MC, you're all right.
I was thinking of how to get around the problem we have of people saying 'Misogyny? That's not misogyny!', or 'I'm not being racist but...', but you're right. Crap idea.

Well this is another of the reasons that I registered my ambivilence when this addition to the wiki was mooted.

So, do y’all want this passage putting into the Guide to Posting Etiquette? I know I wasn’t convinced it was necessary, but it’s been written now, and other people in this thread do seem to think it’ll be useful.

Also: howsabout linking off the etiquette guide onto a separate ‘resource page’ on hate-speech? Somewhere nice and calm that we can direct people to, from which they can find/read/engage with useful and informative barbelith threads like, for example

'Pikey' 'Council' 'townie' - derogatory class rhetoric
Gay, and not in a good way: the use of "gay" as a pejorative term without overt reference to homosexuality.
Anyone fancy a fag? Is "hate speech" in the eye of the beholder?

..plus others. What does anyone think?

I for one would really like to see that passage put into the Guide to Posting Etiquette. It might not be necessary, but by God it will be useful.

Yes. Useful.

Okay then, that’s added. And very nice it looks too.

So, does anyone have any thoughts about whether a hate speech page would be useful?

I was thinking about what smoothly said before - the problem we have of people saying 'Misogyny? That's not misogyny!', or 'I'm not being racist but...', and about whether there is anything else that could go in the wiki to explain where barbel;ith is on certain things.

And Squire said something about not realising that we’d already come to a conclusion about a specific word: but it’s not so much that the *policy* is set as a hard and fast rule - his old username hasn’t been written down in a list of banned words - but rather that the discussion in the relevant thread has been left at a certain point. Where the thread leaves off, that’s kinda where barbelith is on this. But if anyone still wants to argue the toss, that’s the place to do it: having read the whole thread and continuing on from previous discussions on barbelith.

So, just that maybe it'd be good to arrange these key threads somewhere so everyone can easily see them. Does that even make any sense? It’s just a thought.
