bad joke this ish: the bit about 'this dialogue is coming from this ship, which is bigger inside than outside.' Whah?

Ah, there's always room for a wee bit more metatext... warms me cockles, it does.

"We in comics see a word balloon coming from a ship or Very Large Thing In The Air all the time; I don't even get the joke here other than pointing out the visual convention."

And taking the piss regarding his own captions describing the carrier.

Marvel solicits for #6:

>> NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. #6
Written by WARREN ELLIS
Pencils & Cover by STUART IMMONEN
Dirk Anger loves you. He bought you flowers and candy. Did you get them? He HATES Nextwave, though. He's created lots of things to kill them deader than Elvis. Much deader. Can Nextwave survive this? And more importantly, will you return Dirk Anger's calls?

Dirk Anger loves you. He bought you flowers and candy. Did you get them?

No. Goddammit! Because he's always hopped up on baby chicks and he never writes down my address when I tell it to him again. Goddamn spy organizations who can't. actually. find. anyone.

Damn fleshly ones...

The Swiss Army Aaron Stack sold it for me, 'I have many useful devices' .

Also Elsa Bloodstone high kicking and shotgun wielding, this is indeed what they want. I'm really liking the hyper-kinetic boom boom art style.

Costumes are cool as well, jumpsuits but with long coats, definately what's in this year.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Snacky! #3 is out today. Pin-Up Hugs n' Kisses Boom-Boom on the front cover. The major flaw with Immonen's artwork is that most of the time, Boom-Boom and Bloodstone look the same. I much prefer Boom-Boom, though.

Spoilers, lovelies:

"I said boom." Followed by explosions. I love the evil robotmen of Human Resources, although I wish they'd get a bit more development or something.

Random thought: what if the Beyonder was behind Beyond Corp?

Our Man Aaron doesn't get to do as much this episode, but the Captain finally does.

The last Unusual Weapon of Mass Destruction. Huh. Interesting, although I think the first few pages of set up to have us hate our future villain were a bit overdone. It would have been more interesting/amusing if it'd been some sort of preschool teacher or something.

Although I didn't think the Human Resources guy saying "This is my run away song so I do not get killed by scary girl" in the first issue, I did enjoy the Human Resources guy saying "Faster pussycat kill kill" in this issue, referencing the famous mondo bizarro movie title of course.

The Human Resources robots weird me. They're peculiar. I'd like to use them as my back-up band. World tour. Magnus, Robot Fighter as the opening act...

Although the giant phone in #1 didn't make me laugh, for some reason the giant gun that Dirk Anger is playing giant Russian Roulette on really made me laugh.

I love the Letter-O-Matic. That letter column made me want to go listen to Toto albums.

Just got #2 this week. Funness.

I didn't like it quite as much as the first issue, though. There was a lot of focus on the pretty pictures, and while there was LOTS of humorous dialogue, it just couldn't live up to Dirk Anger's "I Love HATE!" speech from #1. The result of this is that I just flew through the issue without feeling that I'd come out if it with anything more than a really good laugh ("I make you die with steamy electric mek bits now clack clack clack." "More tea, Father?" "...confirmed." "Father...are you crying?" "Father Blood Drench Robo Crush simply has something in his lense. Leave Father Blood Drench Robo Crush alone now, fleshy."), overall I just didn't find that the book had enough in it.

Immonen's art is BEAUTIFUL, though. It still perfectly captures the cartoony-ness of the book, but really...two issues that could just as easily be a 22 mintue episode of a cartoon...I dunno. I just keep feeling that Ellis could have compressed the two issues together into one and gotten twice the jokes and all the action. But then again, I could be wrong.

Still...it IS a lot of fun.

Heh. As a massive Ellis fan, and one of the anti-decompression crowd, I believe that to be one of the most hilarious sentences I've ever read.

Of the first two issues, what would you have not included?

How would you have handled the book? Two 22 page issues to introduce an audience to 6 characters and a "badguy", plus the defeat of said guy who is bad. Tall order.

it can be done. may cost you some brain cells, but it's doable.

the swiss-knife sequence was the only funny bit for me in #2.
fing-fang-foon puking his heart out was too sad to be anywhere near fun for me...

I can get a kick out of humour from hate [not the organization, the feeling]; but fun from sadness is way more difficult.

Fin Fang Foom's Heart Is Broken was a dandy bit of sadism.

I laughed harder at that than I have at anything else thus far. Pencils are the biggest fun of the thing.

It's one of those things where - like the episode of 'Excel Saga' where the little girl's folks are dead boo hoo hoo, or Pat Mills' 'Blind Ballerina' thing - because we're so used to sad things being pushed to an extreme, parodying that Sad Thing (TM) appears on the level and simply sad.

Could have used some of that torn-tights backside action, though, surely. For the kids.

Father Blood Drench Robo Crush and some of Elsa Bloodstone's dialogue were probably my two favourite parts of #2. Ok, that and the two panels about The Captain's strength, and the one panel about how Monica can change into any sort of energy in the electromagnetic spectrum...except the ones they make up on Star Trek.

That's pretty much it. #1 was great. Loved NextWave #1 to bits. Pure goodness.

I can understand Chaos' point about needing #1 to establish things...but #2 just seemed like it was really lacking something in comparison.

Now don't get me wrong. I am an ENORMOUS Ellis fan, and will buy almost any comic that comes out with Warren's name on it. But at the same time...NextWave #2 just didn't do it for me as much as I'd hope it would. ::shrugs:: Just ain't my cup've tea, I suppose.

Still...Father Blood Drench Robo Crush.

"Why doesn't anyone think I'm cool? Space aliens thought I was cool once."

Another fun issue. It's Kyle Rayner's origin but a drunk asshole! Makes Kyle's origin seem all the more laughable somehow (and I'm saying this as someone who likes Kyle, but come on, his origin is pretty ridiculous).

Damn, Immonen is a fantastic artist. And he draws a nice Transformer...complete with robotic car-grill moustache!

And the Letter-O-Matic continues to amuse. (well, me at least)

Nextwave is still worth picking up, and it's still entertaining, but I don't think it's really living up to the promise of the first issue. I'm not sure why, but the last couple of issues have been a little "meh".

Enjoyed #4 more than #3. #s 1 and 2 were piss-funny... #3 felt more like a superhero comic with jokes in than a funny comic with superheroes in, if that makes any sense. #4 seemed to get back on the comedy train a bit.

The Falcon
21:09 / 24.04.06
I'm inclined to agree - the first two issues were really good, #3 was a bit of a downer and #4 - well, there's no Dirk Anger. Transformer was good, but it's little consolation. I really wish Boom-Boom would stop quoting Will Smith's unloved 90s hit 'Boom! Shake the Room', also.

Reckon, I'll pick up the next arc, but it does need to get back onto the adrenal stupidity quickly.

i really like NW 1-4, but 5 is easily better than all four put together. too much rock for words.

but i didn;t find out about the black and white version until now. the prize for the colouring contest: original NW art.

speaking of: lucky people in toronto, like me, got to meet stuart immonnen last week at the snail. what a nice guy! but now i'm kicking myself for not letting him tattoo my face.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
21:47 / 24.05.06
I'm enjoying the poptastic collage party flyer covers so far, although #1 & 5 are too similar. I'm a bit bored of the random team shots. To pin-up or not to pin-up? And yet, spoilers:

That said, I totally agree with grime re: #5. The hidden tragedy of Aaron Stack (psst - he's really irritating), Celestials, swiss-army-fingers, and the koala bears of death! Seems to be everybody in Nextwave has a reason to run the away from their backstories, even Monica and Tabitha. Looks like only Elsa and Dirk (if he counts as Nextwave) haven't had the spastic-one-eighty flashback sequences yet. I suppose that'll come up next issue. Nextwave goes beyond compression/decompression straight into weirdy seizure-inducing narrative jumping (Time is irrelevant / Narrative captions are irrelevant) in and out of past and present.

The Assault Pterosuit Flock and quantum-tunnel drill bits. Schrodinger's Death! Probably my favourite random bit. I want one of their pterodactyl combat suits.

OK, S. Death and the Celestials' evaluation of Aaron Stack's worth had me laughing very VERY loudly in the subway on the way home. Great issue. And dammit, I love the Letter-O-Matic!

i'm right with you, the pterodactyl suits and celestials were so very awesome. after hyping the unusual weapons of mass destruction, ellis, along with amazing visuals, completely delivers.

there is one thing bugging me about an otherwise great book: boomer. i still don't get her flying, and she's the one character with an inauthentic voice. she seems blandly pop. however, the x-force gag was fuckin hilarious!

second only to the avengers gag, which left me with multiple ruptured organs.

random thought: does ellis' sense of humour seem strangely simillar to that of jhonen vazquez? specifically, refferences to "head-meat", etc.

This issue went off like gangbusters. I liked the line about Dirk Anger knowing all about H.A.T.E's nefarious plans and just not giving a damn, the "sob" from the guy launching the Drop Bears, the bears themselves and finally the phrase Quantum Death. Some real Ellis-isms in this issue, especially Dirk's "Moo hoo ha ha" which can kind of jar but still an excellent issue.

I thought it was losing it a bit with issues 3 and 4 (though 4 was much better than 3 imho)- 5 is a definite return to the fun of the first couple.

(Checks #1) Monica orders Boomer at one point to put on a "personal flight harness"... so that sorts that one out, I guess. You're still right that she's the only character of whom Ellis doesn't seem to have the measure, although she does have some peerless one-liners.

It doesn't always help that Immonen has, at times, difficulty distinguishing between Elsa and Boomer.
