Oh, I missed you e.triplets! Anyone out there tonight? Hello? 'llo, 'llo, 'llooow[=echo, fyi]

Barely here... suffering from mid to end of essay stress. Will probably be of little use for the normal exchanging of lateshift quips. How's you?

alas
01:27 / 14.11.05
I'm suffering grading bad student essay stress. I find I need the odd distraction from the pain. Hope yours goes well....for your prof's sake, if nothing else.

Shrug
01:46 / 14.11.05
I don't envy you that alas. But try not to be too hard on them. Errr it's all cosmically entwined after all. Sshh don't disagree reasonably good karma may be my only hope.

alas
01:56 / 14.11.05
I am trying to be gentle with them. At least, I try to be gentle in my comments and fair in my grades. That's the goal, anyway. If anything, the grades are inflated.

I think it's the insidious effect of consumer culture. "The Customer Is Always Right." Well, no, in this case, the student is often wrong. Alas! So we're gentle, but not in ways that are ultimately very helpful, I think.

But then maybe that's easy for me to say. I do hope things go well for you. And that someone else joins us to take some pressure off our response-times...!

Shrug
02:06 / 14.11.05
Yes indeed I'm totally aware of the practically inherent wrongness of students. It's all about that quest for knowledge I suppose alot of mis-steps on the way.
While your hear though, any tips on general summation techniques (feeling a bit brainfried and haven't partook of academia in a few years).

alas
02:27 / 14.11.05
Don't just summarize: ask "what's, finally at stake, here, in the argument I've just made?" Ideally, link it to the big issues in the specific course you're in--think about the lectures and readings and even the course description. In that framework, why does your argument matter? (In short: "So what?")

02:51 / 14.11.05
Yea Gods nearly there. Thanks alas. *Good vibes* to help you persevere through those essay mounds.

Hello?

alas
03:05 / 14.11.05
Hey, keggers, what's up!

alas
03:14 / 14.11.05
Jesus, Keggers, I just lost Double Shrug. Please don't YOU abandon me TOO!

I can't take this anymore. How will I ever get all these essays graded if I can't count on a cadre of merry lateshifters?

Shrug
03:40 / 14.11.05
Still here tweaking this monstrosity to %perfection%.
Wow I guess I've screwed up my body clock irreparably again for next week.
What exactly are you grading(subject wise and paper wise)?

Shrug
03:46 / 14.11.05
I want to say that I'm only "nominally" here. Could nominally in this context be considered correct? In name only?
(Doesn't bode well for brain. Analysis overload.)

Phut... Phut... Phut.... crrrchHH.

(brain grinds to halt)

alas
03:46 / 14.11.05
Well, once again, it's English 101 papers. I'm not sure where you are writing from, and if you have English 101 there, but I discussed it in the last lateshift, ummm, here, assuming my HTML-fu is even marginally working...

alas
03:54 / 14.11.05
Oh, and DS, I like the literal use of "nominally" as in, "in name only."--works especially well in a virtual context.

If you have a possibility of meditating or walking for say, about 25 minutes, do so. It will calm your head, and you'll come back with a better perspective on the paper.

Finally, thanks for not abandoning me.

alas
04:07 / 14.11.05
Hey? Guys? Where is everybody?

[I'm feeling abandoned again, alas! "I fall upon the thorns of life, I bleed..."[=one of the worst lines in all of Romantic poetry, Percy Bysshe Shelley being the guilty party.]

Shrug
04:14 / 14.11.05
Sorry no need to feel abandoned, I'm just setting up my printer. I wonder if I'll wake my flatmates me cacophonous printing noise or indeed if I have kept them awake with constant typing noise or swearing at my computer.

Soon I suspect the Barbelith machine proper shall grind into motion in anycase. An hour or so?

alas
04:20 / 14.11.05
Ah, probably you're right about the 'lith waking up soon, DS, but I'm too old to pull an all nighter (I'm one of these sneaky North American lithers for whom the late shift isn't really so late--it's just 1:15 AM, here). But I'll definitely have to get up and grade essays tomorrow morning, again. I'm turning into a pumpkin. But just, ummmm....11 more to go? I can get up and do those tomorrow before 10. Arrgghhh.

Tired of having pudding for brains. Still, I'd like to chat for a bit, get out of paper head.

alas
04:29 / 14.11.05
....alas, however, I think I have to get to bed, now that I've done a bit of paperwork, etc. Hope your paper turns out well, DS. And good night, dear keggers, wherever you are!

Shrug
04:35 / 14.11.05
Wow, it's about 6:30 here, I'm far to melted to converse with though. I'm going to just lie down for a few seconds and hope for the spurt of energy needed to push onto the train in about an hour.
Goodnight Alas,
Best wishes and Thanks.
Go to bed now! The only way I'm going to get sleep at this stage is vicariously. So Please!

Shrug
04:37 / 14.11.05
Wow the above just took me 15 minutes to type. Arrgghhh.

Saint Keggers
02:09 / 15.11.05
Too early to go to bed, too late to start anything. Who's around?

Alex's Grandma
02:22 / 15.11.05
I am. I can't go to bed until I've finished writing 'the play' so, y'know, this could take a while.

Saint Keggers
02:25 / 15.11.05
How's 'the play' going?

Alex's Grandma
02:31 / 15.11.05
Well it's nearly finished. I just have to get the hero to explain why he's hired two actors, a Polish escort girl and a green velour crocodile who was supposedly there at Belsen, and Dachau, to in effect destroy his career in advertising, and I'm home free...

If I get this right, it's going to be great.

Saint Keggers
02:34 / 15.11.05
It sounds like a lovely play. Im sure the house will be packed every night

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
02:34 / 15.11.05
Hello. I'm at work. All work. No 'play'. I feel dull.

Saint Keggers
02:37 / 15.11.05
Oh Stoatie, you're in the lateshift now. You can't be dull here.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
02:57 / 15.11.05
Oh. Okay.

(does a little dance).

How's that?

Alex's Grandma
02:59 / 15.11.05
Stoat! How the devil's it going?

Alex's Grandma
03:01 / 15.11.05
(And guys, would it be ok if we talked about guns now? I just feel as if we should.)

Saint Keggers
03:01 / 15.11.05
I haven't seen a dance like that since I watched Footloose on fast-faward! Bravo! Bravo!

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
03:05 / 15.11.05
(Takes a bow). You're too kind.

So. Guns.
