I just got a delivery from amazon.co.uk and there was also a voucher over 25 £ for wine (www.nakedwines.com, "Get Naked. Drink Better. Spend Less."). You´d have to buy at least 64.99 £ of wine though.

I´m pretty sure, there are still some people on this site who like to drink occasionally. So anyone who spends money on wine and wants the code for the voucher, pm me.

This may be too late to be of much use, but last time we rented through an agent in the UK (Jan 08) we were hit with a very hefty fee for credit and reference checks. This is despite the fact that as we had just returned from travelling and were both unemployed, we were paying six months rent in advance!

Everyone we asked at the time said that the agents' fees had been going up steeply for some time and that £100-£150 *per person* was now typical. We also asked at a number of other letting agents in the area (east London) and they were all charging around the same, some even higher.

In the end we paid the fee because we wanted the property and couldn't see a way around it. I still don't think it is fair or reasonable and I'll be both pleased and interested if you find a way around it.

Good luck.

did jesus perform miracles on saturdays?

According to the bible, Jesus healed a man´s hand on the sabbath (Matthew 12, 13).

did jesus perform miracles on saturdays?

Shouldn't this be a random thought?

more of a vague philosophical question. as in, do miracles count as work? if they are work, should they be performed on the sabbath?

if jesus's job title is "messiah", then isn't doing miracles part of his job?

I mean, keep the sabbath day holy, okay, miracles are probably holy.

it came from a stupid conversation I had with a jewish friend who was thinking about taking a job that would require work on saturdays. I said, "what would jesus do?" and then the question arose.

it's a dumb question, but not a random thought in the sense that I was hoping for an answer.

Sorry, I thought it was rhetoric/ironic...

However, if people think that Jesus=God, and God says "No Work!", then...

Still: What about Orthodox Jewish Doctors? If they are saving a life, is it "work"? If an Orthodox settlement is being attacked on the Sabbath, can they defend themselves?

I think that there are exeptions to what is defined as "work" for specific occasions.

there are exceptions.

I guess in the end it depends on whether or not a miracle is really "work" and probably it isn't.

or it could be a case of jesus rewriting the rules. if the one important rule is "do unto others...", then miracles ought to be okay. presumably you'd like someone else doing a miracle unto you on the sabbath.

Why must men (and I'm afraid it's always, though by no means all, men) sneeze SO FUCKING LOUDLY? I've never heard a woman sneeze like her head is about to come off, like there's a bomb in her sinuses. In fact some can do tiny internal mouse sneezes, which always awes me.

Is there some sort of biological reason behind it, or is it simply laziness, lack of self-control, or sheer rampant exhibitionism?

Sorry - not wishing to tar all blokes with this brush - but WHY??? My colleague does it right across from me and my Dad does it and it's like a controlled fucking nuclear explosion. It cannot be normal, necessary OR unmuffle-able and it pisses me right off.

Why do I belch loudly?

Because I can.

Personally I prefer a loud sneeze to those ones some people do where it sounds like they're sneezing internally.

I keep expecting the back of their heads to come off in a cloud of red jolly.

I suppose a more extravagent sneeze has a better chance of dislodging whatever provoked the sneeze. However, one presumes you'd get a similar effect with rapid, quiet sneezes too.

A cloud of red jolly sounds almost festive ...

Glenn, my commiserations: does it drive you crazy too, or doesn't it bother you?

I have this thing about very loud sudden noises very near me, and it really hacks me off to discover I've basically been momentarily terrified by someone's nasal expulsions. A combination of embarrasment, anger and revulsion, I guess.

My partner is female and her sneezes can smash glass. Well, they're very fucking loud and unexpected anyway (and she doesn't cover her mouth- I think it's because if she did the sneeze power would BLOW OFF HER HAND AT THE WRIST because it's so uncontrollable) *and* she gets hay fever.

So WP, I feel your pain.

Nah it doesn't really bother me. OTOH one of my best mates has a super-powered sneeze that - and I've witnessed this many a time - will propel him several yards across a room if he's sitting. Could be that he actually lays it on a bit thick, tho. And the amount of snot, spit and general mucus he produces in one of those is just... tremendous. Used to get a right bollocking off his teachers in school... Not to mention from the poor bastard who happened to be sitting in front of him.

What do you say to a man who's vasectomy has gone wrong?

Am looking for something sympathetic without sounding too pitying and struggling for suitable prose

Hmmm it's good, but it's not right - in any sense

Hope you're back in work soon, seems impersonal and wrong as do any of - firing on all cylinders, up and about, back in action or anything of that ilk.

Think will just have to go for the sympathetic and inoffensive

What do you say to a man who's vasectomy has gone wrong?

Depends on what you mean by "gone wrong." Are we talking "Congratulations! You're a father!" wrong, or "Now you can get that dream job as a harem guard" wrong?

EDITED TO ADD: Oh, I see. Um. Can't go wrong with "Hope you're feeling better soon."

Annnyway, I'm here with another question. What with the DJ equipment, I've some fairly decent speakers sat on the other side of my room, and yet I'm still playing most of my music through my iBook speakers. What's my best option to link one to the other? I tried a long phono-to-3.5mm cable, but unless it's just that it was cheap and dodgy, I assume anyone who knows about these things is probably wincing at the thought of the sound that produced. Is there a cheapish and easy way, or do I need to start looking at expensive sound cards for that sort of thing?

Most desktops these days come with a decent enough integrated sound card. I'm quite happy with the one that I built myself, never felt the need to go get a soundcard for it. I am by no means a music afficianado though. In a laptop, the sound quality is usually one of the first things to get axed in the interests of making something cheap and portable. Best of luck.

Thank'ee for the reply. It's not so much "do I need a soundcard to make anything coming out of connected speakers sound good?", though, as "I have a laptop with a 3.5mm socket over here, some speakers with phono sockets over there, and is there an easy way to connect them?". Any idea?

You can get a lead that goes from RCA(phono) to minijack for very little. You can get a good one for about a tenner.

Do you have an electronics shop near you?

Pingle, there're ways of doing it remotely if you don't want a wire trailing across the room - how much are you willing to spend?

I need to get a new laptop, essentially just for word processing, storing music files and watching DVDs. I'm looking at this one on eBay but I'm totally useless about this stuff and have no idea if it looks any good. The price seems pretty cheap in Australian $$, but can anyone tell me if it will do what I need efficiently?

Apple iBook G4 Laptop

1.2Ghz G4 CPU
HUGE! UPGRADED to 1.00 GB Memory/RAM

Battery is super healthy, iBooks are known for their ridiculously long battery life. This one averaged 5+ hours on my standard usage (WiFi on, browsing web and emails)

30GB Hard Drive
WiFi Wireless Network Card
Bluetooth Wireless
DVD/CD Combo Drive Burner

Machine is currently running the latest version of OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Or here if you want a look (hoping I remembered how to link right).

What teas, if any, are good for colds?

On the office tray in front of me I have Yorkshire Tea, Earl Grey, Green Tea (plain and lemon), Chai and Peppermint.

Help me choose?

I don´t know about those teas helping with a cold.

But last week, there was an article about chicken soup helping, so get that instead.

last week I had a nasty cold and a friend convinced me to try their chinese remedy which was I think just green tea with loads of honey and lemon. I figured it'd be just the same as tea, but holy crap, it blew my cough/sore throat away.

could just be cooincidence. but it's an excuse to drink yummy tea. and when you're out it's an excuse to visit your local chinese bubble tea/pastry shop.

On the iBook, if you didn't buy it, one like that should be perfectly capable of doing what you're talking about (depending on how much music you have; assuming you want 10Gb for other stuff, the remaining 20Gb will hold around 250 albums in decent enough quality). You might want to at least check the screen size, though; I think those come in 14 and 12 inches, with 14 being small and 12 very small by laptop standards (which is in my head a good thing, but some people watching DVDs like something a bit larger).

On the speaker-linking, I bought the cheapest long phono-to-3.5mm cable off eBay, and it produced a very painful sound. I can't think of an electronics shop (there are a couple of places that *might* sell such things), but if it's just that the cable I bought was rubbish, should I be fine if I just buy this?

Wireless would be nice, but really, wires can go comfortably behind a desk and along the wall without really being in the way.

If the socket works with other speakers, and therefore other jacks, then the problem is either with your lead or your mixer.

Does your mixer have a phono/line switch? Or dedicated ports?

You want line. Putting a laptop through phono will sound distorted and LOUD.

Ah! You've made one small but very erroneous assumption there: that I wouldn't be stupid enough to just try to plug the wires straight into the speakers rather than going through the mixer.

I told you I wasn't exactly hott on the technical stuff. But yay, thank you lots! That appears to have solved things nicely.

Tea good for cold - basically you want to steer clear of the following - caffeine, milk, too much refined sugar. Hot water with honey and lemon (and ginger if you like) is great, peppermint tea not too bad (although it is better for stomach upsets.

If the green is caffeine free go with that one, otherwise the green lemon is about the best there.
