A practical question, this: what with the weather being pissymiserable at the moment, does anyone know of any pub / bar in Angel / Islington with a dry space for smokers?

A gazebo? An awning? Anything?

Yes, the Camden Head in Camden passage: covered picanic tables out front, many of them. Heaters. They know their duty.

Can anyone recommend any restaurants or bars in Central London that have a (ideally covered in some way - canopy, umbrellas, gazebo) quiet garden for eating/smoking/drinking in? Reason being that I am sick of pubs increasing their "outside space" by putting tables and chair on the side of the road, inches from the fucking traffic. Also, a big fan of little hidden-away garden/patios/whatever in the middle of urban sprawl (especially where you can book tables) and not a big fan of sitting on a bench yelling over a 4x4.

Does anyone think that the ban will lead to pubs/bars etc. starting to take bookings for outside tables? If it doesn't, it really should - half the pubs I've visited over the last few weeks have been empty inside and packed to overflowing outside, to the extent that people have brough chairs and tables from inside onto the pavement.

The Castle on Pentonville Road has a fantastic open area on the first floor, perfect for the smoking inclined.

Actually, quite nice for the rest of us too.

Ah yes, I know it! It's like a roof terrace, isn't it? Good call, that man. I think Babushka (up Cally Road near King's Cross) also has a roof terrace - or used to, anyway - and is quite nice (or used to be, anyway).

Castle is a fine and lovely establishment, but do not overlook the Shakespeare's Head nearby, just 'round the back of Sadler's Wells. May look like a terrifying council estate pub, but has a fabulous hidden garden, and blind-eye-turning landlord.

I for one don't miss smoke filled pubs and restaurants at all. Does anyone actually mind having to smoke in a separate room?
