Also, must reiterate. Moonlight through bullet holes? Absolutely classic.

Definitely! Did I never notice this before, or was it changed for the final cover version? If it was, brilliant decision.

I like Manke's art, but not that much when he inks it himself. I was expecting the more slick style the inker must bring. Maybe it switches that way for the more superhero-style antics when SHADE show up?

And going by the version of the cover in the first post of this thread, the moon shining through the bullet holes was added to the final cover. Nice.

I definitely noticed the shift in the inks too, but it works so well here. It just reeks of old school, natty, EC comics. I don't think I would've been too into a Batman-esque Mahnke on this book. Too clean. This is perfectly dirty. Like the other books, this artwork fits the tone of the book to a TEE.

i really really really liked this.

art was cool. tone was well creepy. pacing - just right.

and frankenstein's rebirth was clearly on the right side of both cheese and corn - a real achievement.

some genuinely horrible moments in this too.

another take on the fanboy outsider.

Yes. Loved the horrible, horribleness of it all. Giant maggotty babies sitting on your back and munching your flesh while all you can think is "obey". I always like it when Morrison makes his bad guys truly horrific. Melmoth is a particularly sick fucker - his plans always seem to involve molesting kiddies. Hopefully that means Seven Soldiers won't end with our heroies realising they and the Sheeda are all part of the same cosmic squid. We'll have none of that, just a spade in the face, please!

Frankenstein = instantly charismatic. And of course, you cannot kill what doessssss not LIIIIIVE!!11!

Did anyone get the idea that Our Young Vessel of Evil was, like, three or four indie comix characters rolled up in one? He had a sort of Art School Confidential/Crumb/a couple other Fantagraphics books vibe to him. Mostly in the way he was drawn, I think.

I was getting that, too, definitely feeling a Clowes/Crumb vibe off of the high school scenes in general (particularly the ingeniously stilted dialogue), but most certainly off of Uglyhead.

...as monsters go, I'm seeing Frankenstein everywhere now. Thake that, Hollywood! Vampires in leather aren't cool anymore! (where they ever...?)

Even I was working in a Western comic with Frankenstein as the main character (how "New Weird" of me, huh?), but now the Wachowski brothers have done that in an issue of Doc Frankenstein... Which I don't think is that bad. I'ts a pretty fun romp.

Things Frankenstein #2 Taught Me:

?

- Grant Morrison is the bestest writer in comics today, bar none.
- Mr. Melmoth was on our side after all, in his own funny little way. Too bad he's Martian Shit now.
- Billy Beezer is a hero after all. And him getting chucked to safety is right up there with Jimmy Olsen's swagger for the Jesus Quintana Panel Detail Award For Late 2005-Early 2006.
- The cover for #4 is really the first page of #2.
- Seven Soldiers, when it's all said and done, is just going to be the flyest shit of all time.

So very glad I was wrong about the delay, and DC's site was not to be trusted.

This issue gets a Holy Shit out of me, and puts a big smile on my face.

Some thoughts:

- Melmoth and most of Morrison's Evil Dads Of The Cosmos, including Lex Luthor, aren't so much Evil as they are ruthlessly, misguidedly singular of purpose in their quests to Know What's Best For Their Children.

- Love Melmoth's great big fertility wand, waving it around in Frankenstein's face. Endlessly compensating, endlessly castrated.

- Frankenstein is another kind of Eternal Superteen, the apex of male adolescent grim n' gritty pulp-power fantasies at their most acute, most credible. Burning down a high school, no time for the cute girl, taming unbreakable bitch-beasts, murdering his own father and turning him to shit, a hero to children. Really his father's son, body parts and all.

- Melmoth is Frankenstein's Ed Starsgard, and I wonder how much work he put into the current formation of the 7 Soldiers.

- My guess is Frank either lets go of his hate or dies, or both.

Really phenomenal storytelling.

Great stuff indeed.

Wondering if this makes Franky, Misty's brother?

Didn't Melmoth look vaguely like HUSH?

Liked the cauldron spilling out into slaughter swamp and how that sort of works it's way around to Grundy's Parrallel to Swamp Thing.

Something about the Victorian references... and Mars. Are the Sheeda halfway between homo sapiens and J'onn J'onzz? Time Travel and destroyed cultures, I wish there was more, but the connection was made.

Anyway. Grant really is playing in different kinds of comics. Horror's purple diction is both wonderful to read as well as smart and ambiguous. The first page isn't setting a mood, it's exposition about the moonrises.

Not only will he drop the hate and die... Frank just learned he's the new Melmoth, and it's up to him to stop Gloriana.

will read "DOC FRANKENSTEIN" later on... curious they're both out today.

Also, this is the second time that the splash page has been promoted as a future cover. Even in the comic, there was no promo image of Cover #3. This book seems to be heavily focused on the Sheeda story. Appropiately so, considering most readers have some idea what Frankenstein should be like. GM's seems to be defining the hero the Villian's back story.

So will we get the major download on Gloriana next issue? Or a whole new Villian?

Plus, if he's the Last King's "son", we may have the answer to who's going to wake Princess Misty, if it comes to that.

At this point, I'm hoping it's Darkseid.

Anybody else see the Martian engravings depicting Mageddon on page 10?

Mr Tricks
22:42 / 05.01.06
I thought those carving resonated...

plus the Martian Manhunter type statue head in the previous page.

Now I wanna see J'onn J'onnz vist this version of Mars as well.

LDones
23:44 / 05.01.06
I think the Martian drawing was meant to represent the Red Zombies, rather than Mageddon.

I don't think we've seen the last of Melmoth, or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Frankenstein ongoing series, please.
