Amaya and Nobody's Girl are in hospital, unfortunately, as it appears Amaya didn't take correctly to the breast, partially due to having a very small mouth (even for a newborn) and partially because NG's milk glands are further from the nipple than most women.
Of course, we found all this out after Amaya had started turning yellow due to jaundice, and I was up all night worrying about her because she didn't have a feed for 7+ hours. We went to the hospital after speaking with a duty midwife, and hopefully it will get sorted soon. However, in the meantime NG is somewhere she despises (hospitals, not Edinburgh) and I'm at home alone worrying and feeling like the house seems enpty without the two of them around.
I'm sure everything will be fine one way or another, but it's been a very hard week for all three of us.
On to less distressing topics...
Amaya is a lovely name, what does it mean?
It's a Japanese name, from the kanji...

The left character is ama, "rain". The right is ya, "Night" or "Evening". So it means "Night Rain" or "Evening Rain". NG and I actually had a shortlist of five names, but the more we got to know our new baby, the more we knew she wasn't Lilith, or Sophia... and we both felt like she was Amaya.
I happened upon two fairly cool pieces of information about her name, but only after we names her; Amaya is also a basque name, although in modern times the spelling has been altered to "Amaia", and it means "End", whatever that means. Also, in Japan Amaya-ami is a term for one who follows the Amida Buddha, who is the compassionate Buddha who refused to ascend to Nirvana until every other living creature ascended first. Anyone who says "Namu Amida Butsu" will eventually reach Nirvana according to Pure Land Buddhism, the school of Buddhism that follows Amida.
How do you pronounce that? A-may-a, Amay-a, some otherway?
Probably not correct for Japanese pronunciation, but we pronounce it as "Maya" with an "Ah-" before it.
Thanks for all the well-wishing once again, everyone. |
