Like the Gideon Haigh quotes.

100 opening stand. Not exactly panic stations but not something I wanted to see.

Has anyone seen the stump-cam Kit Kat advert? Very funny.

Haven't been able to watch it on tv so haven't seen that ad. Will look out for it tomorrow, if there's any cricket on. Am getting worried about the rain. Australia finally beging an innings well and it may be too late. Still, I reckon there are plenty of runs in this deck. We just need the time to get them.

Yes, I'm sure there are loads of runs. Hayden seems to have decided to play a test opener's innings for a change, which is the right thing for him to be doing.

I gather they're off for bad light I think I just heard some thunder (I'm in Holborn, about 3 miles from the Oval I'd say). I can't say I'd be too unhappy myself if we had a bit of a downpour.

If rain takes a chunk out of today and most of tomorrow's play I won't be too sad... apart from the fact that I'll be in Hyde Park only a few miles away from the Oval on saturday evening...

Indeed. Michael Atherton has just made the point that H may, in his mind, be playing for his place in the Australian team. If the Aussies lose the Ashes, pressure's for change is going to be enormous and he hasn't really justified his place thus far.

Hayden looks, as A noted, like he's stopped worrying about Langer scoring more runs than him and remembered that he's part of an opening partnership.

On the light/rain issue, I concur with the C4 crew in thinking that it's a slightly odd decision on Australia's part to come off at the first invitation. Why not, from a pretty stable position, carry on and grab a few more overs. Just putting themselves under unneccessary pressure, IMO, having wasted an 1 1/2 hours of a match they have to win.

Agreed. I'm at work so can't see the tv, but how bad is the light? We don't have a minute to spare in this match given the weather conditions so they have to get on with it. Another bad decision from the captain perhaps? Or was it the batsmen who decided?

I think this is likely to be Hayden's last match regardless of his score. He hasn't passed 70 in how many innings - 30? One big score isn't enough. He's almost 34 now, has had a great career and should be ready to make way for someone else. Sure he may have some more good innings in him but so do all batsmen who retire. We have to think of the future and make sure that next time we play England we have an opener who has settled in to the team.

Raining now. It didn't look really bad, not good light at all but definitely playable. (this also the opinion of the commentators) They should have at least tried a couple of overs to see how playable it was.

Now now flowers. Praying for rain isn't in the spirit of the game. Ricky Ponting told me so.

Worrying opening stand by the openers. There was some pretty poor shot selection by the English batsmen and 373 isn't a very good score. Weather.com says...

Partly Cloudy.

England are really hurting without Simon Jones. I would've gone with James Anderson, Colingwood is not an attacking bowler. There's no way to know how much Australia is going to score at this point (don't you love that about Cricket?) but if this continues England may be in trouble. The weather will keep interruping play over the next two days so this one will most likely go down to the end of the fifth day.

no, we've all gone insdie for a bovril while the clouds pass.... we may be some time.

i think it looks like matthew hayden wants to turn up and play for the ashes; a bit late. but he may well do enough in this mood if the rain gives australia enough time to make six hundred and bowl england out without further recourse to willow... o, for st shane to be not out ninety sight when punter declares!!

still an enthralling contest - this is surely one of the great series?? n'matta who wins from here?? or will that make it greater or lesser, depending on who gets up - comments?

So England manage to bowl the Aussies out AND maintain a lead (albeit and incrediblely slender one)...

Pressure on the English batters now, but it isn't as much pressure as it could have been - surely the plan has to be for England to stay in bat for as long as possible while also taking advantage of the bad light and occasional rain... it would be suicidal to attempt to set a modest total and let Australian batters back into the game...

No chance of that happening. England's plan now will be to bat Australia out of the game.

England taking the last 9 wickets for 90 and having a first innings lead is yet another surprise that this series delivers. I hope it is the last one. To be frank I have quite had my fill of thrilling finishes and champagne cricket. I want tomorrow to be a dull day. The duller the better as far as I'm concerned.

Unbelievable. Aussies had been lucky yesterday with the lbw appeals and I wondered if England would lose but I was shocked by how England played today. 300/3 and I fell asleep. Woke up to find them all out for 367. It's highly unlikely this match will have a definite ending and I hope it doesn't. If things go our way we should bat out most of the day and score 300. Australia won't have the time to score those runs.

I agree with you Crash, I don't want England bowled out tomorrow for 150 or something and have another close finish.

well, really, i think that is probably that...

one day to play, nine wickets in hand and a lead to build on; every run counts... would take a disastrous collapse by england to release their grasp on the urn now, surely. how unlikely is that? a serious really devestating all-out-for-under-a-hundred critical collapse and let's face it, is that at all likely? really awful batting to fold like paper dolls and crumble at the weight of expectation of regaining the ashes - momentous.

it would be truly terrible if england just did that. horrible.

i can't see it happening, the poms all out for 39, their lowest ever ashes innings or something truly historical to really add to the overall drama of this remarkable series that england are set to win; they can only lose it from here now. only lose it if they can't bat and get all out for not many and in not long... imagine such a disaster, if you will. just imagine...

i just made up the 39 - anyone know what their lowest ashes innings is?

I'm imagining for all I'm worth right now ...

I think we will bowl England out today but it all comes down to how many runs we have to chase. Could be an exciting final session as we go for broke chasing 200 in an hour.

This series is just astonishing. Anything could happen this afternoon and evening. Absolutely anything. England could bat all afternoon and put this beyond Australia. England could be skittled and the Aussies knock them off. England could bowl out Australia and win. It would not surprise me if this goes down to the last ball of the match.

Goodness Gracious Meme
11:29 / 12.09.05
Me neither.

And I have to run about today so won't be able to do watch it. Bah.

But I will kiss Pietersen and his bloodline if he can stay in and knock up a decent score.

Unbelievable! Just gets better and better. I'm shouting in the office and everyone is laughing at me.

You're right - anything could happen. KP could get a century and be a hero until he drops Gilchrist on 7 who then goes on to score 151.

Here's a thought - will Australia open with Gilchrist? Or at least put him up the order? Depends how much time we have to get the runs I guess.

William Sack

Will Gilchrist open? Had he not had such a miserable test series with the bat then I think it would be a certainty. He opened in teh ODIs after all. But I think that what with Hayden finding some form in the first innings Ponting is likely to feel that he and Langer will get them off to their best start. I think then that he will come up the order, possibly to 4. And Freddie will roll him over again.

This is going to end up a frantic run-chase isn't it? I wanted a dull day's cricket for fuck sake.
