The more I think about the themes of the series, the more I think the big bad HAS to be somehow who started off human and traded that in for power (and possibility the opportunity to get at the Doctor). The whole series has been about humanity, and what it means to transcend that in good ways (eg, interbreeding with other races) and bad ones (eg, getting an implant in your head in order to get power and money).

or the reverse of that, the big bad is the dalek that is crossed with humanity...

I tend to agree with sleazenation. Having Mickey as the master villian defies narrative logic - his motivation is not sufficient.

Some said earlier that the line "They survived through me" we hear at the end of Bad Wolf (or was it in the trailer) echoed a similar line said by the last Dalek captured by van Staten. We saw in Bad Wolf that what appeared to be death rays were in fact transmat beams, so it's possible the last Dalek did not destroy itself but teleported away somewhere.

That Dalek would know about all about reality TV, human culture (and sightings of the doctor on earth) as a result of downloading the entire internet. It told Rose it was changing as a result of absorbing her DNA. Perhaps it understands human emotions and how to manipulate them - and played with Rose's sympathy to get the roof of van Staten's base open so it could teleport away.

So maybe the "God of all Daleks" mentioned in one of the trailers for Parting of the Ways, is the last Dalek mutated into some human-Dalek hybrid. It's declared itself Emperor Dalek and gone about creating more human Dalek's by harvesting them through Bad Wolf TV. Which might partly be in revenge for being kept prisoner & tortured by van Staten.

Or perhaps it could be Adam - he's been to Satellite 5. He has the motivation to get back at the doctor. There could well be some negative consequence from allowing technology from the future loose on present day earth. Perhaps if the last Dalek did survive it tracked Adam down.

Yeah, as I say, none of the theories are disproved yet, but Mickey does have a motive, however thin. "Do I have to wait for you forever, beacuse I will" is one of his last lines.

Perhaps Mickey merged with the last Dalek. They're both interested in Rose and pissed at the Doctor after all.

Perhaps I should get rid of the blanking on that post. I think I will. Hmm. It downloaded the whole internet, and Mickey presumably hacked the disc the Doc gave him, allowing him to give the Dalek orders about what to do to escape. Might work. Just realised that the bomb that was about to land on the Doctor is another instance of Bad Wolf links that couldn't be Mickey. Then again, we couldn't see it, and neither could Rose or the Doctor. Oh, but what if the Chula nanites are something else he recovered to help rebuild the Daleks?

I have to say, I personally believe that it will be Mickey, but perhaps there's a dimension to it we're not seeing. He totally has strong motive, and it would make for an interesting baddy.

If it's Mickey it totaly guts the human interest in his character and Rose. And it's frankly a crap reason to enslave humanity and build an alien war fleet.

Bad Wolf still unrevealed, and not the Face of Boe, claims RTD - but could this be misdirection?

Step away from the Guardian website today. Even I forced myself to step around an article which seems to give everything away. There's only two days to go, so if anyone's going to use that as source I'm off. There's spoiling and there's spoiling. I'd think it's fair game to post the details, but that's way too much for me.
Thicky Koplinsky interviewed RTD this morning and there was another snippet of the episode, which showed the Daleks might not be all they seem.

In the first series we had the Bad Wolf running through, is there anything similar in the second series?

"Yes there is, and that word has already been heard on screen. And that's all I'm saying. You'll have to go back and trawl through 13 episodes to realise what I'm on about.

"You'll hear the word in the Christmas special though"

Here we go again...

The new doctor who thread clearly states that it will contain spoilers for the next series and christmas special. Which are both still very far away.

All this thread repetition is time consuming and it can't be good for bandwidth usage. Do we really need seven threads for every series we want to discuss at length?

ONLY NICE THINGS
20:36 / 24.08.05
Some day I will put together a PowerPoint presentation explaining what bandwidth is. Until then, can we embargo appeals to it to justify changing Barbelith so it is more like we want?

In this case, it would probably be useful to lock this thread, put a proper SPOILER warning oon the other one, and then start a thread to discuss the actual episodes, without spoilers, when the thhing is actually shown.

So... is this now the official spoiler thread? Or is this the closed and locked thread I'm posting a brand new message on?

(p.s. They now say Anthony Head is NOT the Master.)

So, the new companion is Freema Agyeman.

...And yes, that was her playing Adeloa in Army Of Ghosts, and meeting an icky end courtesy of the Cybermen's slice-and-dice 'upgrades'. I had already seen a rumour that she was the new companion, so it really took me by surprise to see them pull a big tube out of her brain... But apparently she will return playing a different character (and not the alternate-Earth counterpart to Adeola, sadly) called Martha Jones.

I already like her.

Me too. Shame it won't be Mickey or Jackie but didn't think it would be. I liked her in Army of Ghosts, where she did a good job with her smallish part. Concern will be the automatic resistance to anyone who isn't Billie Piper, of whom little was predicted once upon a time.

Oh, the change from "it's doomed with this Billie person!" to "it's doomed without Billie and with this person!" will be hilarious.

I saw the spaghetti coming out of the brain before I heard the rumour, so I just thought it was misinformation. Very surprised to hear it confirmed. I'm sure she'll do fine.

I'm not loving her. I know her part in the most recent ep was tiny, but I didn't think she stood out as being terribly good or interesting or having star quality in any way. Terribly pretty, I grant you, but that's all. Enough for some, I guess, but Billie has grown on me and I really think that in this version of Who, it's written and performed as a LOT more of a double-act. The companion is not nearly as easy to replace as ze used to be without risking alienating a large segment of the audience.

But then I wasn't a great fan of Tennant's Doctor and I reckon he's OK now (although still not as good as Eccleston).

Who am I kidding? I only watch it for Jackie, Mickey and the Daleks.

Ah, so we've moved on from "the new companion looks shit and will cause a massive popularity slump for the next series" to "the new companion is untested"? That's a lot less difficult to agree with.

Our Lady Has Left the Building
16:34 / 05.07.06
Yes, didn't get much of a chance to see her acting in last Saturday's episode so I'll hold off, is she coming in the Christmas special or next season I wonder?

It's now at such levels that I think we have to say "Avoid all news sources everywhere!" if you don't want to know anything about Doctor Who, the cover of next weeks RT pretty much spells out what I assume was supposed to be a big surprise of the episode (unless RT are wrong of course). I think I'm going to have to write a letter they'll undoubtably ignore asking them if they could possibly try to stop giving away plot details in their enthusiasm to promote the series.

Or could be the Dalek's Bible now they've found religimon.

Although, if it's Phil Colins

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
'Cos she didn't fit in there

Oh think twice...

The Sun, which correctly predicted the casting of Agyeman as a companion, the possible death of Rose Tyler and the war between Daleks and Cybermen in the finalé reported today that the classic villain returning next year will be the Ice Warriors.

Can I get a meh? I'd much prefer to see the Master or even the Sontarans returning before the terrors with square eyes.

I'm possibly being unfair on the Ice Warriors, as the most recent story I've seen them in was that godawful Monster of Peladon story, but they don't strike me as interesting, terrifying or remotely cool (heh) in any way. I hear they were quite menacing during the second Doctor's tenure, but I've only seen their appearances with the third Doctor.

In this week's Radio Times Tennant hinted that the 3D glasses would be explained in further detail in Doomsday. RTD said something similar in the commentary for Army of Ghosts.

I'm quite excited about the casting of Agyeman and willing to give her a chance to grow on me. Somebody asked upthread whether she'll be in the Christmas special: RTD said in the press release that the first episode she'll appear in is the season 3 opener. Of course, everything that RTD says should be take with a very large pinch of salt. That man has a habit of out and out lying about what is or what isn't coming.

In my above post, I mixed up my rags. It was actually in today's Daily Mirror that the Ice Warrior rumour was reported. The Doctor and Martha are reportedly going to encounter them on their first adventure together.

The Ice Warriors are from Mars, yes? Perhaps the Doctor picks up Martha from a human colony on the planet. That way, she'd be sufficiently versed in alien technology and the like, so as to avoid having to restate some of the basic details that have already been covered with Rose and the viewer.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

If the Ice Warriors are butched up like the Cybermen and Daleks there's no reason they won't work, it would be nice if they could do something a bit more with them than just make them bulletproof and genocidal.

I don't mind there being Daleks, I just hope they aren't Daleks who escaped the end of season one (and I hope that isn't the Emperor Dalek in there) as I feel it detracts from the sacrifice Rose and Doctor Nine made.

I wonder if there's going to be any crossovers between Who and Torchwood? Probably not but we can dream...
