Benny asked: "Okay, not happened to me, but has anyone done a swap and gotten some of their own songs back (the ones they sent I mean, not just something that you own)?"
And my short answer is: yes, sort of.
Longer answer follows, along with a leetle critique of what I've received so far....
Benny the Ball's CD is full of a lot of familiar stuff (and a few surprises), but nothing I had on CD (which is the only format I can play at the moment), so it was good to get it (and that Beastie Boys track is one of my favourites, but the very same one that fucks up on my DVD, so I was delighted to get that one!)
I've kind of flicked through grant's two CDs but I keep stopping and repeating the tracks I really, really like, so I haven't played the others as much...
I like what I've heard of Bambling's CD so far -- you can't really go wrong with jangly 60s-style guitars, though the songs do start to all sound a bit alike when you can't understand the lyrics.
I'm half-wishing I'd sent Meem one of the other CDs from the one I did, based on what he sent me...
This swapping thing is proving verrrrrry interesting, actually. Even though there were no themes set, I have noticed that there are a number of groups or songs that I put on my CDs (which I put together before receiving anyone else's) that are also cropping up on other peoples' tracklists -- not the same songs by the same groups, but different songs by the same groups, or different versions of the same song. Is this some sort of weird Barbelith Hive Mind thing going across the ether or something? It's not been stuff from whatever the latest, Best Band In The World(tm) is at the moment, either, as you might expect, but old stuff. (In fact, I haven't had anything from whatever the latest, Best Band In The World(tm) is at the moment, which also comes as a bit of a surprise).
Things that have been coming up a bit:
* Two of the CDs I received had tracks by the Temptations, and I put a track by them on one of my CDs, and also a duet with the Supremes on another
* I've also had CDs with tracks from Elliott Smith, Dusty Springfield, Nada Surf, all of whom I put on my CDs.
* There have been tracks by Mouse on Mars, and tracks which aren't by the Fall that feature Mark E Smith, featured on my CDs and other peoples'.
* I put a Funki Porcini track on one of my CDs which appears to use a sample from one of the tracks on Meem's CD (which made me jump when I heard it, cos, of all the FP tracks I could have chosen...)
* There have been a couple of tracks about Jesus
* I put two cover versions on the CD I made for inconplast, which he put the originals of on my CD (purely coincidentally, mind you)
I was getting into this whole thing so much that I put together eight different tracklists -- some of them were made more or less with specific people in mind (V4 and V5 were made with grant and Rizla in mind, V7 with Benny in mind)...
I haven't sent out tracklistings with my CDs because I need drivers for my printer and I really didn't want to write out by hand the tracklistings for the amount of CDs I've been sending out at the moment! But I have designed covers for them all, which I'll post up on here at some point... (maybe even later today if people are desperate) |
