I have to get some more blank CDs. That'll have to wait until I have some more cash...

I put a Vaseline's song (Molly's Lips) on a CD I made for Stoatie a couple of weeks ago...

And this morning, with my complete iTunes collection on random shuffle (that's over a full week's worth of music), it played both versions of Rock Steady -- the orginal Marvels version off Rizla's CD, and the Aretha Franklin version off Benny's. In the space of about two hours.

I wish I had that anti-war doowop track, though.

Sorry I meant to post on this last week- I got Rizla's two CD's last week and they're bloody marvelous.

There is lots of stuff i'd never heard of but will be looking out for- I'm currently at work and i'm cursing leaving them in my car last night- but from memory;

All the Billy Childish stuff & Thee Heatcoatees was met with a welcome smile- Louis Rialto (sorry i don't have the track listing but i think thats what it was called) was a great re-working of Louis Louis.

Um.. the milky Wimpshake mentioned by Matsya had me swerving all over the road as i attempted to pogo whilst driving, The Kimya Dawson track made me realise that all the talent from the mouldy peaches wasn't Adam Green and I should get her album too...

And a final mention should go to Rizlas own Ultraviolet Catastrophes rendition of God Gave Rock n Roll to you- Flux, filesharers- this man needs a platform.

Rizla your CD was sent yesterday so hopefully should should get it today, apologies for the delay- no excuse only my own lazyness.

Anybody else wanting in on the CD swap- or wanting start a new round PM me- its time for summer compilations....

I wish I had that anti-war doowop track, though.

Yeah, sorry about that Anna - as is ever the case, the revised CD I put together about a week after I sent yours off would probably have been far more up your street, and is more varied and more cohesively put together, than the one I actually sent. Apologies.

For the record, the song in question is "Greetings (This is Uncle Sam)" by The Monitors, and it's a killer.

The Kimya Dawson track made me realise that all the talent from the mouldy peaches wasn't Adam Green and I should get her album too...

Definitely! Adam's stuff is goofy and fun, but for my money Kimya's the real talent.

Thanks for the kind words Copey!

You'll just have to make me another CD, Riz. Actually, there was a load of stuff I was going to ask you for -- remember that tape you sent me a couple of years ago? I can't find it but I still have the tracklisting and there are a number of tracks I really want to own again.. And Le Sperm vs the Ultraviolet Catastrophe was you?! Dude! It's my current favourite combo of band+song name.

Is anyone else going to post tracklistings? I did, it's your turn, guys.

The Ultraviolet Catastrophe portion of it is me. Sort of a guest appearence. See if you can guess which bits I did.

Tape from a couple of years ago... hmm.. would that be the "a freelance slacker asks.." one? cos I've still got a copy of that, so ask away and I can do my best to put a new CD together..

Wow, I can't wait for those!!

Just popping in to publicly express my enjoyment of Copey's Bottle's CD - excellent stuff, thanks! The way it manages to include songs I've never heard before by many of my favourite bands is mind-boggling, and it's a blast from start to finish.

How have I previously lived without hearing Sonic Youth (and what sounds like about 100 of their drunken friends) doing 'Victoria'? Only they could get away with doing a cover version of a cover version..

Bucky sound like some pretty funny fellas, and that Comenechi track absolutely rules!! It sounds like I want my new band to sound! (what can I say, I'm realistic).

And that's an absolutely cracking Billy Childish / Holly Golightly number too - might make it into my debut DJ set next week if it's not already overflowing with Childish.

Much appreciated anyway - thanks!

Thanks rizla, glad it hit the mark,

I started a thread on bucky a while back Here - its got a link to their website where there are more downloads and you can get their album.

I'm glad you didn't have all the tracks i had a moment of parania when I listened to your two cd's that you were bound to have everything i was sending?! But i did try to put a few tracks by bands i'd mentioned in threads (often to know response!) to continue the discussions.. as well as a couple of Bonafide Classics- (i just realised that the Gloria Jones version of tainted love is just about to hit the 'Best piece of music recorded ever' thread... cos its definitely up there)

Comanechi is a friends band - who i've witnessed go from being one of the worst bands in the world to actually pretty good (also they're very very funny live) I know they just signed a publishing deal, and have a second ep coming out very soon on White Heat... website Here

Bumpity-bump for Gypsy Lantern. And everyone else who's recently told me they would join in, too (*cough*psi-lock*cough*CherryBomb*cough*Stoatie*)

And where are those CDs people promised to send me?! I'm not sending out any more till I get some new ones... :]

Riz, I'll PM you the tracklisting of that tape you did me, so if you wanna swap something else, that's cool.

I recently acquired some new tunage, so I can probably do some different compilations if anyone wants something other than the eight I already did. (Addicted? Moi?)

Okay, some of mine have finally gone out. bad finances have been preventing international post. Anna, Grant, yours are on their way. Frownland, Riz, Dupre, they're going next week.

I also got a mix from someone called Mirror, but I don't remember PM-swapping addresses with them and sadly I lost the return address on the envelop, so Mirror, if you're listening, PM me.

Grant, I got the package of love and have sent one to you in reply. Am slowly acquainting myself with your mixes. Am yet to check out the science scans, but the book on Telstar is bliss.

I don't know if I've also heaped praise on The Dupre's lovely tweaky pop mix, but consider it heaps. It's gorgeous in the true kinaesthetic sense of the word.

Copey - I await with anticipation.

Dupre and Riz's mixes go out tomorrow.

Ah, yes, that would be me Benny. Sorry, I've been really shit at getting my last batch finished (But extra work responsibilities and a long-distance relationship don't help. Well, that's my excuse...)

Once I've honoured these swaps, I'd be up for more. Might stick to a generic Summer Mix this time, though, as attempting the bespoke approach again would clearly be a child's fantasy...

I got onto Slim Gaillard through a summer radio special on the Beats - Gaillard figures in a Kerouac novel somewhere along the way, can't remember which. He has some songs on the Beat Generation box set. Heard this crazy song called "Yep Rock Herasey" or something, and the announcer came back and spoke about how Slim had invented his own jazz language of hep gibberish called "voot". Years later a friend and I were driving from melbourne to Adelaide and he had a best of on CD which we listened to all the way (okay, we listened to skinny puppy and motorhead too...). I was hooked.

There are a couple of retrospective pages here and here. On that second one you can tune in to Slim Gaillard radio, which is a streamed loop of about twenty to twenty-five of his songs.

In an issue of my zine, Jutchy Ya Ya, I featured a grudge match between Slim and legendary Alternate Tentacles rocker Wesley Willis. It just seemed right, somehow.

Slim Gaillard did an amazing track called "Slim's jam". It sounds like it was recorded on a tape recorder or something, and consists of a bunch of jazz-cats jamming while he just sort of talks hip-talk over the top and explains what's going on... I don't know whether it's genuine and random or pre-scripted and supposed to be funny, but it has all this stuff in it like one of the guys has to leave "on the next chord" to go "play a gig", and some other guy wants to join in, but he "hasn't got a reed", and then "ol' Charlie Yardbird Parker" wanders in halfway through, thus guaranteeing the record's legendary status.

It's pretty ace anyway.

I just emailed mp3s to Flux & Qalyn of this album I taped from a friend back in the day and dug out recently -- it's called Funky Fables and is four fairy tales translated into beat slang and Spanglish. Slim Gaillard does the Spanglish, and the jive is by Al "Jazzbeau" Collins.

They're pretty amazing, but I had no real concept of Gaillard outside of this stuff.

Just lobbed a couple of oldies at Anna: Wild Man and Like Your Mum (both with slight alterations). If anyone fancies either of them I've still got them on my hard drive, so gimme a shout (or a PM).

Working on a couple of new comps, hopefully in time for the next round of swapsies. I'm keen to do one of exclusively 'lazy' music - any track suggestions?

Sophia's favorite from matsya's mixes is "Sunshine on My Window."

Sometimes, she will scream until someone plays it.

The Boy (now 11) has a similar, but more restrained reaction to "Sweet 16," a song I'd heard before on an old jazz radio show and sort of thought about hunting down but never did.

Ah, yes -

the cops will take my zipgun,
but not until I clip one
when they frisk us
to see if we're clean

...

The cops are out to get me
but the laws all protect me
you can get away with murder
when you're sweet sixteen

juvenile delinquency has never sounded so hip.

As to Sunshine On the Window, I should make Sophia a dub of HappyLand, which was the shortlived supergroup merger of quan from regurgitator and Janet from spiderbait, she of the sunshiney vocals. it's pop perfection, y'all.
