What irritates you when your online about other posters? What things, when typed, piss you off and make you scream, bite, rip off skin, punch the wall, log off, put your last drink down and say 'Oh i've fucking had enough of this' etc, etc.

Fire away.

'Ola,

I really hate it when somebody goes off the subject and brings up an easy target to make you feel bad - by this I mean if you are saying something about, I don't know, how crap Stormtroopers are, and someone says, 'Isn't that like calling black people niggers' just to get a rise out of you. Not that this has happened here, but it did on another board (not that exact example, I think that the discussion was about pikeys or something). But it's weak debating, that's the phrase that I'm looking for, when people go for the easy answer to snap a reaction... God, I'm rambling.

I like it when the threads don't rot, but the odd obtuse comment pops in. Some of the stuff on this has made me crack up with laughter (I think that it was the random Q and A, can't remember the poster, but the 'can you help me and my friends, is this woman wearing glasses' post as a very recent example).

But when it becomes a love in that goes off track and the odd poster gets ignored so that a bunch of people can fawn over each other, that is something that isn't so good.

Okay, the point was that there are those out there who use the extreme to make a point, not as a means to make a point, but as a means to score an easy point, to make someone feel bad. Maybe I didn't express it very well but it was very early on a sunday morning. But the whole point of this thread was about this surely, not an excuse to jump on a post and say, you fool how dear you!

So Alex, your post was nothing more than a, I'm smarter than you, who agrees smug looking thing, if it wasn't your point, apologise, but that's how it read, and Just, to say that I continue to stagger and depress you through my inanity based on two postings is a bit extreme, maybe you should seek counciling?

haus, the origional discussion was about the term pikey, and a specific type of individual that is deemed pikey by the masses, and how this term is nasty, I wrote that I knew some travelling folk and gypsies that use the term detrimentaly and most of them couldn't care less about some middle-class media type calling them pikey. I was berated as being racist some how, and that was my point, that there are those that jump on a comment, intend to belittle another poster, and then ensure that any post arguement is ignored because of playing the easy card (eg you are racist, sexist, homist, what ever) rather than making a point and discussing it.

Maybe I didn't make that clear, but then again, isn't the point of this thread about what uspest you, and not what you can write and then be attacked for?

Actually, I just suggested you take a look at that thread and see how it compares with your idea of what consitutes a good discussion.

More generally, we've already, I think, unearthed one of the problems with this idea, which is that people are a bit hazy on what exactly they dislike, and how they dislike it. So, for example, Benny, when you say

But when it becomes a love in that goes off track and the odd poster gets ignored so that a bunch of people can fawn over each other, that is something that isn't so good.

You aren't actually very helpfully describing a situation. You will have particular ideas about what constitutes a love-in, and what constitutes "fawning". It's possible this could be clarified with examples, but as things stand I'm not really getting a picture of what sort of behaviour you are complaining about or how people might best alter their behaviour...

I could be wrong, but Fly's comment read to me as addressed to Eion, and not to you, Benny. Perhaps not very friendly, either way.

Just a thought.

If the case then, sorry once again, but that's how the thread read (perhaps a name, then point, may have made this clearer, anyway).

And Haus, sorry, I re-read what I wrote, and I wasn't going off at you, it just read that way, the link was very good, and a much better, clearer discussion about a subject, which is what I guess my point is, a discussion board rather than a sound off board.

The whole love in thing was more about the fact that the thread was about how some new posters would feel less alienated, or at least that's how I read it. Some threads go off on a tangent and ignore new inserts, however valid, becasue a new point has been made that some people may or may not get, and the new poster falls by the wayside.

God, I sound like pouting fool....

It's a good job i'm honest, otherwise i'd really be in trouble.

Your inanity continues to stagger and depress me.

Sorry.

Me too, i've looked back at this thread and wondered why the hell i made it. That's no big thing though, i seem to do this all the time here. Maybe there has to be someone who pisses people off or something i don't know.

This thread is stupid. It's just going to get peoples backs up eventually and it's just not fun. Maybe i'm not facing the things i need to face and i'm spending too much time here again. You have to admit though that there's always going to be someone getting your backs up, maybe that's the whole thing about an online board with 4000+ members, there will always be someone like me around, i don't know. OR maybe i just don't have the skills to converse with people without being an idiot at the moment, or at all.

I have a life to sort out, i shouldn't be here as much. I say this though and then go back to posting loads.

I'm going to try AGAIN to sort some problems out, because i'm bored of this now. I have a life that's falling off the edge of a cliff and i need to open the parachute. This doesn't mean i'll not be posting anymore, just that i'll hardly be posting. If i get out of this fucking hole i'm in (sorry it's too personal to just talk about here) maybe i'll find that i can be good at conversation or something.

Peace and seeyou later.

Eion;

I think if anything you should post here more often, not less.

Your material's always very entertaining, IMHO, and I'd hate to think you were going to just stop.

So, y'know, keep on keeping on.

I'll throw my two bits your way too, Eion. I agree with Slim that you've got to calm down a little. Don't take it all too seriously--not this board, not people's judgments, and not yourself.

And while I was out having a smoke moments ago and thinking of this thread, I thought to myself, like Alex says, you don't need to post less, indeed, "keep on keeping on."

May the road rise.

When terribly clever people who are utterly sophisticated WHO ARE ON MESSAGE BOARD FOR A COMIC BOOK, kind of see themselves as utterly superior and feel the need to condescend. Rather than just perhaps have a giggle when people post something a bit stupid.

Thanks, i'll try and chill a little. My problem stems from making stupid threads and posts, but yeah, it's just been a silly stage. I've also been feeling a bit off for a while now so maybe i'm an easy target. I'm feeling better right now actually, i'm on my healing phase which includes better food, fresh orange and less cigs and it seems to be working.

But i'm so ANGRY and short tempered without as much smoking! I'll have to meditate more or i'll flip. Vice City is my saviour right now, no joke.

I apologise as im in a particulaly bad mood but

I think theres a heck of a lot of snobbery generally on this board, if someone says something a bit silly, why do people feel the need to cuss them so heavy . Fair enough theres disagreeing with a point someones made but why get all personal.

In comparison with where exactly does Barbelith come off as seething pit of intolerance and bile? Are these Care Bear boards, or something?
I don't think I've seen another community where flaming is as frowned upon, where the benefit of the doubt is given as generously, or idiosyncrasies treated as respectfully. Tell me where's hugglier? I'll go and have my chin tickled.

He's right, you know. Now, if you believe that Barbleith is a comic book board, then perhaps you have different and lower expectations of the signal/noise ratio. However, unless you have some sort of glitch that means that you can only see the Comic Books thread, I don't see how that position can be justified.

It's an unfortunate fact that right now there is less discussion of philosophy and current affairs than has occurred previously. There are a number of reasons for this, from some people being busy or finishing their dissertations/prison sentences/pudding to the difficulty of attracting new members when the board is de facto closed, to general demographics. It is also the case that a fairly small number of people, if they post enthusiastically enough and densely enough, can therefore give the impression that Barbelith is turning into a special school, which in turn makes people with investment in the quality of discussion prickly, and so on.

The best way to balance that out is generally to contribute something of value. Unsuported and acontextual allegations of superiority, snobbery and condescension are rarely productive. I think one problem may be that one man's light-hearted banter is another man's condescension, depending to a greater or lesser extent on their respective comfort with and experience of the medium.

Vivor, people post on Barbelith for a lot of reasons, many of them having nothing to do with Jeffrey or The Invisibles.

I find it annoying when people go on and on and on and on and on about being treated fairly.

I think I just said the comic book thing to get a reaction to be honest, but I honestly don't think someone adding something that perhaps isn't particulaly sharp hinders "quality discussion" .

...can therefore give the impression that Barbelith is turning into a special school, which in turn makes people with investment in the quality of discussion prickly, and so on.

"special school" "quality discussion" hmmm

Ah, well, when you put it like that... could I get a verb with that last commment? If you mean "Haus, old chap, I don't think the phrase "special school" is a very nice one. It has undertones disrespectful to people with learning difficulties", then good point that man. One could substitute "international halfwit dating agency", perhaps.

The defence that Barbelith is a comics forum is a bit like the idea that we should not say anything that George Morrison would disagree with - it's an attempt to limit the utility of Barbelith to what one person wants it to be. To say so merely to get a rise is, I'm afraid, part of the problem rather than the solution - it is baiting, trying to get a reaction by misrepresenting your beliefs - in effect, low-level trolling. I'd suggest that saying what you actually believe rather than what you think is most likely to get a response would show more respect for your interlocutors - that is, not being rude, condescending and those other things you were complaining about. Likewise responding with a clearly set-out position rather than pulling out words and forcing everyone else to do the legwork. Those who are assiduously polite, like moi-mème, natch, will make the effort to try to work out what you mean, but it's expecting a level of charity that others less divinely cuddlesome may not be willing to offer.

So, here's a problem - Benny the Ball would like to see people's posts not being ignored. On the other hand, Rhythmic Michelle would like to see non-sharp posts not disrupting the flow, which might *involve* ignoring them. It's a difficult balancing act, this being nice business...

I think the question shouldn't really be "what makes for a really irritating poster" and more "what makes a really good poster". There's nowt wrong with making loads of daft posts, but its signal to noise isn't it. I like reading posts by people who think about the subject before they hit reply, people who are bringing something new and interesting to the table, people who are speaking openly and honestly about their own experiences. Quality posts are literally the lifeblood of a place like barbelith.

Eieon, Mate. Stop bloody apologising to people that you'll probably never meet, and stop being such a drama queen about everything, eh? Nobody really gives a shit. If you want to earn the respect of people on here – and Christ alone knows why that seems so important to you – then make good posts. You're only as interesting or as twatish as your last post. Do something interesting. Think about it. Try and describe your responses to it. That's it.
