Hooray! My copy just arrived. School work be damned, I've got a book to read!

Hey Sax, is your deal for two books or one? And am I right in thinking that you negotiated it without requiring the services of an agent and thus got the whole of the lolly?

Sax
06:40 / 14.04.05
The deal was for one book, Whisk, with an option for them to consider more, which they're interested in doing.

And yes, it was an unagented deal, but I'm interested in getting an agent to do some of the legwork for me in future, if you know anyone who wants to take on a thrusting young buck. And me, as well, obviously.

Charrelz - nice one. You're in Texas, aren't you? I'd be interested to see how the writing travels.

Sax: How much did you not know you wanted but love to have your very own book spoilers thread?!

Sax
10:38 / 18.04.05
It is one of the strangest yet weirdly most erotic experiences of my 'Lithing life. And that includes Xoc giving me his phone number.

Whisky - spill. What's it about? When's it on? Who's in it?

Posting without reading the thread (gasp!) for fear of spoilers, but - hurray! - I just got an email from Amazon to say it's been dispatched. At last.

It ain't on any time soon (unless Robin Hood and his Merry Men turn to amateur theatricals) but it's called Open Secrets and is a one-act play published by Samuel French. It was first produced at the Tristan Bates (Actors' Centre theatre) in Covent Garden about 18 months ago.

I got very very little for it, but it is Amazonable (along with the next one, Half-Life, which was published on my birthday!) and that gives me a happy warm glow.

And did you know, mister Sax, than when I searched for Hinterland it sorted the results by Bestselling and that yours was at the top?

Some reviews dribbling in. Here are some selected highlights:

"This is a dark and engrossing tale full of shrewd observation, sly humour and is the product of what must be a genuinely brilliant skewed imagination... a masterly treatment of a story that breaks all the bounds of marketing-imposed genre and encompasses elements of dystopian fantasy, crime, urban legend, philosophy and even a love story..."
- Orange Prize-shortlisted Joolz Denby, writing in the Telegraph & Argus, Bradford.

"What Hinterland is really about is alienation and marginalisation, and the desperate need to understand the world at the same time as trying to preserve its mystery... Hinterland is an insidious black magic spell of a book. Long after you've read it the story stays with you and imprints itself on the world around you and makes you realise that everything you take for granted and never spare a second look might - just might - be the stuff of magic."
- Paul Baldwin, AOL.co.uk book reviews (subscription only)

More as they land.

"You didn't like it..."

"Of course I did. If it's any consolation to your male ego, I came three times."

A bit bleary-eyed now, having pretty much torn through it in a sitting this afternoon - Well done Sax !

Excellent sense of place in particular, and of everything gradually, and then not so gradually falling apart.

SPOILERS

The Terminus does sounds a bit like somewhere not too unfamilar though - 'Now I know why I haven't been able to phone your flat for days. You've been connected to the internet. Constantly. Fuck knows what it's going to cost you,' and 'you could do well to read some Robert Anton Wilson,' indeed.

A minor criticism - It could have used a bit more shagging I felt, I'm not sure you needed to hold back on that quite so much.

Kind words, Alex. Thanks.

And... don't know about you, but I get a bit squeamish writing sex scenes. Underneath this crude, uncouth exterior beats the heart of a puritanical prude. I mean, I'm quite happy to sit there lost in a hormonal fog of my own depraved fantasising, but when it comes to actually writing it down... I mean, where do you draw the line? Manhood pushing against aching maidenhead? Grasping roughly hold of throbbing, glistening cock?

Review + Mild Mild Mild Spoilers

Well, I finished it yesterday evening, and I was quite pleased with it. As pure entertainment: perfect, brilliant, wonderful, all those otehr nice words. I couldn't put the damn thing down and I loved every minute of it. On a deeper/literary side: good, but could be better (barely). For instance, I felt that I was kind of being clobbered over the head with meaning a few times, but this could be due to my highschool upbringing where the teacher thought you were dumb if you couldn't write a six page essay on the symbolism of Melville picking the name "Ishmael". To explain a bit more, the bit after Cheryl told David about the painting, and he has his little AHA moment just seemed to explain a little too much. I know this is picky, but well, I'm picky.

Having said that, I want to repeat that I really loved the book, and I'll probably end up rereading it over the summer.

On another note, I chuckled a few times while reading about the character's online adventures, just because I knew the author from an online message board. Also, are billykids real? Please tell me they aren't.

Oh yeah, you asked how it travelled. Honestly, change a couple of small details, and it could have been set in Dallas. Granted, I think spending time on this board helped that a bit (i.e., I know what a punter is and what 'taking the piss' means), though I was still caught on a couple words (for instance, you only find tarmac at an airport in the US). The story seemed pretty universal and I think anyone would enjoy it, regardless of where they live.

Good work, Sax.

Cheers, Chuk. Glad you liked it, and your criticisms are duly noted. Less of the hammering people over the head with stuff for the next one. Got it.

And billykids as an actual youth movement aren't quite real, but almost.

Nice crit, thanks.

Life Imitating Hinterland #1

For those who've read it, there's a small scene where David goes to visit a Big Cat expert name of Teddy Bell after reports of a wild beast killing sheep on the moors.

Someone drew this to my attention, a story from the Northern Echo last week about a suspected big cat slaughtering sheep in County Durham. And the police animal liaison officer is called... Eddie Bell.

Spooky. I note that the Authorities have also closed down the Diana Memorial in Hyde Park which is right next to the duck pond!.

I'm still having flashbacks to some of your uglier themes, Sax.

You are, indeed, weird, Sax.

Well, I finally read it! And I really liked it, though it's not the sort of thing I'd normally read - too, well, weird!

I really liked the girls on the duck pond thing, and the general descent into chaos. Did you have an explanation in mind, Sax - I mean, is he going nuts, or is this stuff 'real', or is it all just open to interpretation?

Ouch, my poor eyes. I'm in an internet cafe in Auckland the colour settings are odd, so the Books forum is a lurid pink and a bit fuzzy. Or maybe that's my hangover.

Actually, on the subject of eyes, I wasn't too enamoured of the font in Hinterland! But that's a minor whinge. I did giggle at you basing it on a journalist called David - so much imagination and then ... a journalist called David.

But it's good, everyone should buy it!

Open to interpretation. I'm getting 50-50 responses from people as to whether he's nuts or it's real.

But thanks for the nice words, and for sticking with it. I know it can be a pain to plough through a book that isn't your normal reading.

If so, thanks!

Hello again. I'm weeeeirding out on jetlag so the perfect time to talk about Hinterland! Nah, I didn't mean to sound like I had to plough through it, it's entertaining and fast-moving - spot on for a holiday read. In fact, I very nearly pissed off the Australian immigration people (not people you want to mess with) by reading it in the queue and not realising I was at the front.
I want to have a look through it again and remind myself of what I liked/ meant to comment on, but it's in Australia, coming back with Loomis next week.
Em .. I'm discovering I'm too fogbrained to say anything sensible, I just wanted to stress that I actually liked and enjoyed it.
More when my brain works. And I'll add an Amazon review, too.
Man, this sounds like it should be in the barbelush thread. I'm sober, honest!

10:51 / 23.05.05
Aw, thanks. Look forward to Loomis's take on it as well.

Very nice review in the current Interzone (198) which is written by a 'Lither, too. Who I'm not at liberty to say.

Sample line: "A tender, relevant anti-fantasy that doesn't trip on its own hipness and comes off like an alien abduction party."
