So in the season finale, Lex gets progressively more blatantly eeeevil, Lionel Luthor may have just croaked (while denying he had one of the secret crystals to his own son, of course), Ma and Pa Kent's house get blown up by a second Kryptonite meteor shower (they were inside, but I don't think they'll kill either of them), Clark creates a new fortress of soliture in the Arctic or wherever -- the same way he does in the first Supes film, by throwing a Kryptonian artifact into the snowy wasteland.

1 season left of this show...they're contracted for 5 seasons and I don't see them extending it.

OK, this may galanvize some people to watch this show again in its final season - James Marsters playing Braniac!

---

CANADIAN NATIONAL COMIC BOOK EXPO: SMALLVILLE'S JAMES MARSTERS

James Marsters, formerly Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, said he is enjoying the clarity of Professor Fine/Brainiac, who he is playing in the upcoming season of The WB's Smallville.

"The thing I really love about this role, is that I have a very clear objective," Marsters said. "I know my objective from the very beginning and it's going to carry me through the whole season.

"That was the problem with Spike. In all honesty, that character had no objective 90 percent of the time. (laughs). I would have to make it up. (In Spike accent) 'I've come in to kill Xander again, but I've changed my mind.'

"To find your objective is like a gas pedal for acting. And if you can find that objective and play it honestly, it's like 'Wham!' And if you can't find it, you're mired. I'm really happy about an objective the audience suspects and the other characters don't know. It's the hidden agenda of a zealot -- and it's really interesting."

Marsters was addressing a "V.I.P." paid crowd of about 125 -- nearly all female -- at the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in Toronto on Friday. Before answering questions, he performed about a dozen songs.

Marsters said he has done scenes with Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor and Tom Welling's Clark Kent for the upcoming fifth season.

"Boy, I get to mess with Lex Luthor," Marsters said. "I remember on Buffy, whenever they wanted a new character to look cool, they would come and beat on Spike. Because if he got one over on Spike, he must be very cool. There were times I was just like, 'Here we go again. Beat up on Spike.'

"And that's kind of happening for Mike. He's having to undergo getting topped. Not because of acting, just because of what the words are. The script is designed for my character to top him. I've done two scenes with him, and he's kind of getting irritated (laughs).

"It's got nothing to do with chops. It's just the way the producers want this thing to roll. I've got to say, he's great. I've never know what's going to happen when I look into that guy's eyes. Wow!"

As for Welling, Marsters said: "Tom is really cool. If any of you have crushes on Tom Welling, go right ahead. He's more intelligent than you might think. We don't want to believe that really beautiful people have intelligence, but sometimes, they do. Tom's one of them. He's very funny, very intelligent."

Asked if he would make Season 5 of Smallville better than Season 4, Marsters joked he had to answer that question carefully or face the wrath of the set on Monday.

"Every new actor on a show hopes that their contributions will make the show better," he said. "And I am fully expecting that to happen, as every actor does."

Welling, Rosenbaum, AND Masters? Jesus, the slashfic sites are going to go critical.

I was hoping for a bit of Zod action what with the alien ship being a big black triangle. But Brainiac was my second vote.

Clue me in people. I missed a couple of episodes before the end. So Clark knows that Chloe knows that he's Superfly? When did that happen?

Premiere of season 5 is this Thursday (in the US, that is) at 8 pm. Not sure if this warrants a Season 5 thread since it doesn't seem like many people here still watch it, but the infusion of James Marsters (who is not in the season premiere, as I understand it) might spur fresh interest...

Aquaman is showing up this season too, in one ep. as Arthur Curry. Apparently he and Clark have an underwater battle scene.

"Hercules" from aint it cool news, who starts off by saying that he "got fed up with “Smallville” and stopped watching early last season" says the season 5 premiere is pretty decent, and emphasizes that the design for the Fortress of Solitude in Smallville echoes exactly the original "Superman" movies fortress, as do Bryan Singer's design choices in the upcoming "Superman Returns."

Also:

>> The Phantom Zone returns as well, and we again get to see the faces of agonized individuals pressed up against that spinning, floating geometric space-jail window. It’s all an excuse to recreate the weird ‘70s special effects with dramatic computer-generated imagery, and it’s great fun.

>> I’m inclined to believe these nods to Donner have something to do with the fact that Bryan Singer’s upcoming “Superman Returns” feature adheres so strongly to visual elements introduced in the 1978 feature. At this year’s Comic Con in San Diego, we heard Singer tell the thousands gathered that he and the producers of “Smallville” were sharing information about their respective projects. It seemed odd at the time, because the TV continuity and the movie continuity don’t – and can’t -really match up, but Singer’s comments do make more sense after you’ve seen both the “Superman Returns” footage screened at Comic Con and “Smallville” 5.1.

And I didn't realize it, but Marsters does show up in the season premiere ep:

>> We learn in the credits – the ones subsequent to the “Somebody Save Me” song - that “Buffy” vet James Marsters, who embodies the evil living computer Brainiac this season, appears in tonight’s opener, but I wish someone had arranged to reposition his credit to show’s end – or eliminate it entirely. Marsters’ is not a speaking part this week, and he only appears in the episode’s closing seconds. His nifty entrance would have had far more impact if we weren’t anticipating him all episode.

i've watched this show off and on (mostly off) for the past 4 seasons, but I decided to check out the season 5 premiere at the last minute. HELL! this premiere was done right. Lots of intensity and fun action. The interpersonal stuff was deftly handled. Chloe had to say a couple clunker one-liners, but all the setup for the season was very well placed and laid out.

Anyone see the Aquaman ep.? It looked kind of bizarre...

Just read some reviews - apparently Clark/Arthur said to the other, 'maybe we should form a Junior Lifeguard Association,' (which is weird, since when Bart Allen/the Flash showed up, Bart said 'maybe we could form, I dunno, like a League or something'), and the preview for next week's ep, which apparently features vampires, showed James Marsters saying to Clark 'come on, Clark, you know there's no such thing as vampires.'

I haven't seen an episode of this in ages but I'll watch if in the season final Clark, teams up with Bart, Arthur, and any other DC hero that's made a guest spot, to kick Brainiac's ass.

So evidently smallville Aquaman has the ability to make *me* wet.

Very cute wink-wink ending to the JLA and Aquaman's orange-green comic book costume. I like the plain-clothes-as-homage-to-comics gimmick that is featured in any smallville episode with a guest hero. Flash with the red hoodie, Krypto with the red towel on her back, and now Aquaman with the orange and green swimsuit.

Since he dripped out of the Kryptonian spaceship, I'm assuming he was the ship's artificial intelligence. Maybe programmed to protect Kryptonian technology from falling into the wrong hands or something.

The method of Marsters' arrival, as well as his opening line in Aqua:

seems to give an indication of his nature.

Well, all the sites are saying he's cast as Braniac, who IS a classic supes villan... although to be honest, I can't remember the current version of his origin.

I've really been enjoying this season.

And if you want to torrent it, download a programe called: Peer Guardian 2. It's a mini firewall that blocks known harassment blocking sites. It's free. Works like a charm for me. Filters out 99% of the junk and blocks sites who are often trying to block legitimate legal downloads.

SPOILERS FOR BRAINIAC'S BACKGROUND

Rather than the convoluted continuity of the comic character, I believe they will be basing Marsters' character on the Superman: The Animated Series incarnation.

Brainiac/Milton Fine's association with the Disciples of Zod may be the Smallville interpretation of this history, but given that I still believe that Jor-El is Zod, reaching beyond the Phantom Zone to take his revenge on Jor-El through his subversion of Kal-El, you might want some salt with that.

So when did Smallville Braniac turn into black ooze?

The producers of Smallville have basically said that their Jor-El isn't evil, although who knows, they could be trying to psyche fans out.

The Jor-El/Zod speculation on my part is a result of Terence Stamp's voice, his on-screen relationship to Kal-El and the behaviour of the Kal-El persona.

It's a topic of conversation that, along with 'Is Christopher Reeve Jor-El?' has led to many hours of fanfic in the car on the way home from work.

The whole Jor-El using Lionel's body, but scribbling Zod insignia is sort of odd. I think that Zod was using Lionel's body, and pretending to be Jor-El to take some small revenge of a sort on Kal-El.

Now...is Lionel still possessed?

in a very very cheesy way....er...it was ok.

Chloe was the most interesting part of it. The evil vampire Lana was a bit out of left field.

Actually the whole episode felt out of left field with her suddenly packing for college.

there was some good Brainiac stuff, though.

IMO, the episode seemed to acknowledge Marsters' previous role as Spike in BtVS and also to pastiche both Buffy and Sex in the City - I almost expected the camera to follow Chloe's article as she wrote and narrated it, Carrie-style.

IMHO, another filler episode, albeit with Marsters' subplot shifting gears.

I'd only seen the episode last night and I'd already forgotten the pool scene, which was excellent, as well as 'Actually it is mine.'

I hope that Marsters' analogy of the present global socio-political situation with that of the Roman Empire also holds for Kryptonian history, specifically involving Zod.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, one of the Top News Stories I Never, Ever, EVER Thought I'd See:

from Newsarama:

>> He may get the least amount of respect of any major DC superhero (as well as any superhero, period), but after a flurry of media exposure which saw his mention as a prospective (albeit fictional) film project on HBO’s Entourage and a quasi appearance on the October 20th episode of Smallville, Aquaman is getting his chance at the big time.

>> According to The Hollywood Reproter, Smallville executive producers Miles Millar and Alfred Gough are developing a pilot for a live-action version of Aquaman. The trade reports: “The project is envisioned as a contemporary reinterpretation of the character who lives in the deep sea and enlists sharks and other oceanic creatures to help him in his crime-fighting endeavors.”

>> According to Variety, Greg Beeman will direct the pilot.

>> The pilot will approach the character in much the same manner Smallville approaches the Superman character, that is, setting the storyline relatively early in the character’s life (early twenties), and show the coming of age story as the young man realizes he is something more than human.

>> Rather than continuing with Alan Ritchson (who played “A.C.” – a nod to Arthur Curry, or Aquaman’s human name) as Aquaman, a new actor will reportedly be sought for the lead role, and the pilot would not necessarily follow the Smallville storyline.

>> From Variety:

>> As for plots, "The stories will come from the environment: ocean polluters, evil oil companies and other (threats to the) environment," Gough said. Skein will be set -- and possibly lensed -- in the Florida Keys, not far from the Bermuda Triangle, which will be another major story engine.

>> "There's a mystery surrounding the disappearance of (Curry's) mother and the Bermuda Triangle," Gough said, adding that other freaky occurrences related to the Triangle will provide plot points.

>> Curry will have some superpowers, though he's just beginning to understand them. He'll be able to breathe underwater and have superstrength in water; even a little bit of water will boost his power, allowing producers to explore some plots on land.

>> The pilot is slated to shoot early next year in Florida.

You may all now gasp in terror/excitement/bewilderment.

They were originally contracted for 5 seasons, so this season was supposed to be the final one. But apparently the producers (and the WB) want them to keep churning the show out...rumor has it that they have extended for at least 1 or 2 more seasons.

I read an article (on a tiny website somewhere) with Michael Rosenbaum saying he was really exhausted and tired of doing a weekly series, and wanted to get out of the contract and do other projects...but I imagine they waved a lot of money in front of him and cited some contract clause or something. And the show did make him a star, of course.

I'm sure his agent and the Smallville people don't want him going around saying "Man, I'm locked in for years and sick of it already, I can't stand it and I want to get out and have a life!!" so I notice that tiny interview is the only time Rosenbaum ever made a statement like that.
