Spain are out! No matter how badly England do at least one other country continues to piss away as much talent and potential as our fair isle. Good on you Johnny Spanish.

Far *more*, surely? I mean, they have a decent goalkeeper and everything...

Portugal a bit of a revelation, although utter inability to score could cause them problems. They actually played as if they could be bothered - even down to fighty fighty mcfight action...

Rooney came straight in with his foot in the direction of my face and that is not really fair. He is a young guy who is passionate about his football. Maybe he needs to calm down a bit.

I love this guy so much. So much... Jorg Stiel, my new favourite man, makes perhaps the most fair-minded and complimentary response to having a portly Evertonian driven into your face ever.

re: pissing away I wass thinking over the historical long run rather than any particular tourney but yes they have a keeper and everything. Although at least England aren't reduced to fielding leeds rejects in defence... ;-)

England are 6-1 to win the whole thing on the Ladbrokes websiote. Think I might have a fiver on them before we beat Croatia tonight.

OK, so I watched the game last night in a nice middle-class pub with Flyboy, Tryphena Sparks, Haus and a couple of Flyboy's friends and just had none of my irrational prejudices fulfilled. A tense match on screen with no bad behaviour by either team (I think there was one yellow card and that was it), I think the last time I watched a match all the way through was when I was 14 and had a half-crush on Gary Lineker (look, I was young and VERY confused, all right?) so this was great. And we had the excited man shouting weird things at the screen all evening. I think all future games should have a 'Sven-Cam' box in the corner of the screen trained on him, just on the off-chance he changes expression ever.

But no, a tense night, I can't believe footy fans pay Sky to beam league matches into their home so they can sit on the edge of their seats for 3/4s of the year (I suppose that's why people support the lower placed clubs, they rarely have that much to play for), but I may be watching on Thursday...

I feel for Phil Neville, by the way - the poor hapless tosser. Do you think he ran on thinking to himself "Come on, Phil, play up! If you do well now, then surely a starting berth beckons for the quarter-final..."

I will have Rooney's babies/give him unto half my kingdom, if he keeps playing like that.

Gerrard also rocked.

Thank God he abandoned the somersault celebrations - I'm not sure the ground could have stood a double impact.

Rooney is astonishing isn't he? Chelsea for 50m at the end of the tournament, I reckon... We could do with Owen picking up some form, though - The Portugese defence are going to be focusing on young Wayne (as Joe Royle kept calling him in a slightly sinister way)...

Do you think footballers learn all their athletic celebrations in training? I can't do somersaults, I'd feel silly if I scored a goal "Oh no! They'll find out my secret!... *clenches first like Tim Henman* OH NO!"

Indeed. An 18 year-old is leading the England team, by example, by a *long* way.

Owen and Beckham needs to raise their game/exert authority on Thursday.... Gerrard can't pull three defenders away on his own, though on this evidence, he'll give it a good shot.

My god that was a fucking tense 40 minutes last night. When Croatia scored I had to turn the TV off as I couldn't stand to watch England throw it away in the last group match like they did last time. Luckily I turned it back on in time to see Scholes score and I was transfixed from then on.

Will Everton sell Rooney? And if so where will the young fella go? I don't know if he's mature enough to cope overseas so maybe one of the big three English clubs would be a good move for him. Abramovich may well be reaching into his very large pockets right now!

Everton will sell Rooney, I think. They can't afford to pay him what some clubs will, he is going to get frustrated in a mediocre team, and David Moyes, I suspect, will be quite happy to swap the hassle of answering questions about Rooney (who, est we forget, only scored 9 goals last season) every post-match for being able to bring in 5 or 6 good players to create a side less reliant on Rooney being fit and in form. He is a talented coach and promising manager who probably doesn't want to have to deal with the responsibility.

Chelsea, however, are probably the only English club, and possibly the only *club*, that will be able to afford him. If Everton get a chance to sell at the top of the market, they'll probably jump at it, while making noises about how they object to the sale. They'll accuse Rooney of disloyalty, he them of dishonesty, and Bob's your uncle.

sleaze: given your self-professed loathing of football, is it not rather self-defeating and odd to hang around in a Euro 2004 thread moaning about blanket media coverage of football?

Anyway, Rooney. They'll sell. Chelsea will be offering at least £50mill, and that isn't the sort of money that Everton/Moyes can turn down.

They're going to lose him sooner or later - ie within next couple of seasons, at most, and post Euro they're going to get the highest price. An amount that a club of Everton's size could use to build a stable future for the club in terms of players/financial stability.

And well as Moyes has done with Rooney, both as a coach/nurturer, he's not going to be able to function well as a manager for much longer with the level of attention Rooney's getting....

Exactly. In your third season as a premiership manager, the previous season having been a pretty dreadful one, and at a club with limited staff, you don't *want* to have to spend a large part of your day dealing with Wayne Rooney/Wayne Rooney's agent/clubs chasing Wayne Rooney/a dressing room destabilised by the vast disparity in pay/popularity between them and Wayne Rooney/the media trying to interview Wayne Rooney or you about Wayne Rooney... Better by far to have a happy board and the money to strengthen an aging and mediocre squad with players that will not lead to an unrelenting focus by the media on the team's inadequacies behind the golden boy... If you have to devote all your headspace to a player who is bigger than your club, you get into trouble - see Glenn Roeder and Frank Clark for examples...

Nah. They should take the money. At most, gamble on his World Cup form continuing into the start of next season and pushing the price up a bit further, but

Bollocks to that. I reckon England could properly beat Germany, if we get past Portugal. Not so sure about our chances against Holland, though. I’m hoping Germany stumble cluelessly through.

Not very likely though, is it? Arse.
