I'm starting to play with neurofeedback (it's less expensive than I thought it would be!) and thought I'd check in to see what's up....

...playing with neurofeedback...

What have you been doing and what results have you had?

I've been going to a lovely gent who puts electrodes on my earlobes, the top of my head, and behind one ear; then I sit with headphones on and try to make a tone drop in pitch by increasing the amplitude of my alpha waves.

Results? Low key frustration (of the kind I can laugh about) about how just as soon as I start making/letting the pitch drop, I get a sort of "Eureka!" response which blows the alpha away... However, the overall trend is definitely up and I am able to almost double the alpha wave amplitude from baseline as of this evening (second session) over the course of a 30 minute session.

the Open-rTMS project:

http://open-rtms.sourceforge.net/

"This project is intended to be similar to the OpenEEG project. The OpenEEG project has been quite a success at creating open source hardware designs and software. A goal of this project is to create similar hardware designs and software for TMS. This project follows in the footsteps of research done by Dr. Michael Persinger on the effects of modulated and pulsed magnetic fields on subjective experience.

The project is in a very early alpha stage. Some of the current goals for the project include:

Create a workable and easy to build hardware design to allow experimentation similar to that done by Dr. Persinger."

Mr Coates posts on TMS at FOO.

I'm officially jealous of Mr. Coates.

Again.

And I feel like a total slacker -- I still have that old function generator I bought when planning to build a unit myself, but never got as far as getting the damn banana plugs I'd need to carry signals out of the thing.

Ha! I'm cited as background on the front page of the Open-Source project! Yay for me! Ix-nay on the Acker-slay!

I live with a 3-year-old who never shuts up. I'd pay good money for one of those.

I have been fascinated by this type of technology for years, so much so I got into a career in Virtual Reality. I have been wanting so much to build my own Dream Machine for years, 10 bloody years! Time to crank out an affirmation and remind myself to build the thing when I get home. This post is one of the best and informative I have read on Barbelith, right up my alley, thanks Sine and thanks to ghosts for dredging it up. I might have to go buy a biofeedback machine too and relive my chilhood dream by becoming the crazy scientist I always wanted to become. On a side note, I wonder if the pulses mentioned ever employ subtle harmonics to re-inforce the original pulse to make the experience stronger?

I just read this thread (three years later, alas). Are there any other updates on this field? Is sine still around, and if he is, can he post any more interesting info? Those old records sounded really interesting.

If you're really curious, user: astrojax worked for a while at a lab that experimented with this stuff. There are also some old Lab threads on it.
