I have no freezer, and the silly excuse for a fridge we have would take all night to chill the wine and/or vodka. Martini it is...and a fine sipping liquor that turns out to be too.

Saint Keggers
22:03 / 26.03.04
Silly me, I always thought martini was a mix. Like vodka and something else?

Have you gone to the liquor store Baz? Have you?

Y’know, usually I do keep emergency booze supplies about the place. But I’ve been having rather too many actual emergencies of late, so when an ordinary, mundane, feel-like-gettin’-drunk mood comes upon me, the house is dry. Pah, again.

All that’s available to me right now is an espresso machine and a tin of snuff. Used in combination, these have potential, but for more of a ‘omg deadline-day!’ kind of vibe, ie not chilled out at all.

Martini = vodka + vermouth, surely?

Grey Area
22:15 / 26.03.04
Or gin. And it has to be dry vermouth. What I have here is a sweet vermouth, suitable for drinking on its one-some.

Jub
22:15 / 26.03.04
yeah - but you can get Martini as a bottle in itself. serves as 50mls. I'm not drunk either bed head. bit stoned mind you. gave up the booze for lent and have 14 days left. what's your excuse?

Saint Keggers
22:16 / 26.03.04
Yeah I just got PMed taht martini is a mix. Its been about a year and 1/2 since I had a martini. I must go out and buy myself a good bar set.

OK, to clear up the confusion, I have this:

Which I gather is a form of vermouth, used to make the cocktail of the same name.

My excuse? Simply: drunk the house dry and didn’t replenish the supplies. Which is to say, my excuse is, I’m a fool. A fooooolllllll [/Soldeed]

Being a shocking heathen, I haven’t ever given anything up for Lent. Is it extra holy fun when you start again?

And. Is it nice, GA? Describe the drinking sensation in your best Loyd Grossman purple prose, that I might enjoy by proxy.

The good thing about having alcoholic workmates round is, when they leave, there's more booze in the house than before they arrived. I have just counted 5 bottles of champagne (Laurent Perrier), 4 bottles of red, and 2 bottles of white. And three pizzas!

They drank all the beer though.

No fruit juice or mixers though, so the cocktails will just be red wine with a strawberry floating in it.

OK bedhead, you've officially stumped me. I blame the Martini because I can't for the life of me figure out how Lloyd Grossman would describe being mildly intoxicated.

it's a hard life eh Xoc?

double extra fun. A good friday!

I don't do it cos of religious reasons really, but cos my liver needs a break once a year...

Keggers. This is Loyd Grossman:

All-round know-it-all Bostonian toff who’ll hold forth in annoying transatlantic whine on any matter concerning ‘good taste’.

He always sounds intoxicated to me.

oh - Good luck, Baz! And good evening, BiP.

LG also has his own range of pasta sauces, and does alot for charity.

Actually, serious on the last one, friend works for an online culture org for whom he's a patron, and apparently he does lots of hustling for good causes.

LG: not as bad as you thought. frightening, innit.

Oh it's good isn't it? Funnily enough, I was out with one of what's his names Bosey's(?) relatives last weekend. Lovely girl - from Deal of all places!

I do like Stephen Fry, one of the only men in the country that could have it out with Paxman I think. I was trying to think of people who could beat old Paxman in a fight (verbal obviously), and came up with,
Stephen Fry
Boris Johnson
Lord Wolff - well any QC except cherie booth - and the attorney general! - ghastly woman.
Brian Sewell
maybe even Will Self.

anyone else?

I suppose I should point out, I happen to think Paxman is the mutt's nutts!

Uhhh? fill me in. How on earth does someone related to a posh family end up in somewhere as godforsaken as Deal? I'm fascinated now...

Wilde is loooooovely. Have it on again in the background ad we're in the prison, Constance has just told him she doesn't want a divorce. *sob*

may have to reread de profundis now...

Hmm, not as great a fan of JP meself, and think the reason Fry is the *best man ever* is coz he's twice as witty, intelligent, sharp as the rest of them, but so lovely with it.

I think for yr verbals I might nominate Katherine Cleaver.

It’s always good cruel fun when Stephen Fry is on Just a Minute, because his wordy genius is guaranteed to puncture the ego of self-styled wit and raconteur and all-round cleverclogs Clement Freud. Poor old Clement’s getting on a bit - well, actually he’s completely past it, but he’s in denial about his dotage and gets quite openly peeved as the more sprightly wits dance rings around him. And no-one twinkles like Big Stephen does.

Mmm, yeah though. Jude Law is quite the fox in Wilde.

Yeah - she's good, but I've not ever heard of her arguing outside of civil rights etc. Paxman is an all round clever-clogs!

The lady in question is still very posh as is her family who all live there. i don't really know her - just met her at a mutual friend's birthday drinks thing. (Deal does have the oldest existing -or is it longest? - pier in the world!)

Did you see it when Fry was on Clive Anderson's talk back thingy, and they had a littel cat fight on that. Brilliant. Yer man Fry won of course.

Now - I'm far too stoned to do anything but sleep and I'm off to sunny luton tommorow, so good night one and all. sleep tight!
