Yeah I hated Wake Up too. Was very disappointed by the whole thing and didn't look at Bendis' run for a whole year. Glad I come to my senses later.

Anyone else have fun with the Black Widow storyline and now even more fun with Maleev's art and the coloring experiments in part I of "Golden Age"? I'm digging this book.

Marvel just announced at Wizard World that Bendis & Maleev will leave DD in December of 2005. One year left!

Luke Cage is no longer a blackploitation joke.

Yeah, but a) the Azz. Luke Cage series was actually pretty good, and b) Bendis doesn't write him in that blaxploitation way, and Bendis has written a lot more of Luke Cage by this point in the past year than Azz. did.

To anyone who didn't like "Wake Up" and wrote off Bendis on DD -- WAKE UP PRETTY MUCH SUCKED, we all feel that way. What follows is terrific. Give it another chance.

And apparently, Marvel is going to put artist Michael Lark (of GOTHAM CENTRAL) on DD after Bendis & Maleev depart (Marvel just hired him away from DC, exclusively)...

I totally agree. This was the ish that got me hooked on Daredevil again. I picked up this issue on a whim, wondering why everbody was raving about DD. After reading it, and being blown away by the art and being intrigued by the story, I went and bought all 3 DD hardcovers off of ebay.

I love the consistency of Matt Murdock's characterisation:

"What's wrong with you?"

"I'm very angry."

He has anger issues!

I felt issue 65 was a bit of a let down. Great writing, great artists, but there was just something missing. Alex Malleev/Matt Hollingsworth partnership maybe? The Doctor Strange segment was amazing. I particullarly loved it when Doctor Strange asked when had Matt last gone to his church.

Issues 49 and 50 were amazing. The way Bendis showed Matt's frustation and rage at not being able to get rid of his enemies or the problems they always brought was a stoke of genius and Mallev's art during the two fights were perfect.

i am sorry to resuurect an old thread but i came very late to this comic but just got Wake Up out of the library at the weekend and thought iwas lovely, once i got used to DD not really being in it, maybe monthly the slow pace and lack of superfights might have put me off, but read all at once (andwithout paying for it) i really enjoyed it. get the impression above that other people really didn't rate this storyline and wonder why?

FinderWolf
14:40 / 11.04.05
yeah, you pretty much nailed why people didn't like it. Incredibly slow pace, very little actually happens in each issue, obvious ending, very 'ooh, look at how touchy-feely and emotional we can be about this Very Special Issue.' Also add the semi-pretentious wannabe Bill Sienkiewcz David Mack paintings with photo references of Kate Moss as the Murdock law offices secretary, etc.

But it was the first thing Bendis wrote for Marvel, esp. since the rest of his DD run has been varying levels of very good and excellent.

Although this new Decalogue group therapy thing isn't the most exciting story, the 2nd part about the guy the Kingpin hired to blow up Matt Murdock's house in the Miller/Mazz legendary BORN AGAIN story was a pretty nifty idea.

Maleev and Bendis end their run with the upcoming "The Murdock Papers," where ol' Kingy offers the feds tons of dirt on Murdock and the preview pages show Ben Urich going to talk to the Kingpin in prison (at Kingy's request). This looks to be a terrific send-off for Bendis.

I thought 'Decalogue' turned out great: a lot of people were complaining that another flashback (or partial flashback) story was the last thing we needed when the pace of the series is often slow as it is, but in the end what we got was something that definitely felt like it came at the right time - a real boiling down of who Matt Murdoch is, why he does what he does, in preparation for Bendis and Maleev's final arc.

I think the baddies in Daredevil have to be really, really creepy to make you feel Murdock's righteous anger as he pounds the crap out of them. If he does it to a random drug dealer he can seem a bit mad - "go home and change your life!" - but it's what demonic mind-possessing babies deserve.

Only complaint about 'Decalogue': it is not ten chapters long and therefor not built around ten commandments at all - swizz!

Yeah, that was really perplexing. I'm pretty sure he intended it to be a ten parter, what with all the other people in the room. I would've much preferred it like that, as it would've given a lot more opportunity to discuss Matt's missing "52".

Otherwise, as usual, a great story.

Yeah, I really liked the five-part 'Decalogue' too; I'd, of recent, taken to complaining (mostly to my own self) about the lack of forward momentum in the plots for... well, pretty much the last two years, after the lowpoint of Greg Horn art in #50. It'd all gotten a bit pleased with the prior two years worth.

But this was real good, especially with the ginger bomber issue, which was a wee beaut of self-contained post-indie, slicea life storytelling; you know, the kind that Brubaker seems to deliver far more regularly these days.

Actually, so was 'Golden Age', but I particularly liked that for the stylistic trick of mashing up comicbook eras.

I loved the recent story arc...and wished it would have gone longer with more stories of people whose lives have been affected by Daredevil. Bendis's Daredevil has been my favorite version of the character, and DD has been one of those comics that creators try to do their best on since Miller brought the character back into decent sales.

I've heard Brubaker is next up on the series, and while he's shown he can do good crime stories, I have yet to see any evidence he'll be as ground-breaking at exploring the idea of a super-hero as Bendis has been. But then, every issue of this comic makes me a simpering fanboy, so I'm not going to apologize for lapsing into the 13 year old inside of me who says, "If thus and such creator leaves, comics will SUCK!"

New issue was very strong - Kingpin makes a deal with the feds that he'll tell them everything he knows about Matt-as-Daredevil, and it's all over the front pages of the Daily Bugle. Curious to see where this goes in Bendis' final arc before Brubaker & Lark take over...

I hope there is a bit more to it than it seems, as it almost seems like the "secret identity revealed" isn't as strong the second time.

But, all along, Bendis has done great work, so I'll cut him some slack.

That's what was so brilliant about the end, though. After Foggy's initial blubbering reaction to Matt's outing, this time he's like "You've got to be fucking kidding."

Loved it.

Here's to hoping we see Kingpin fighting Matt on his own territory-- the courtroom! I can't wait. I'm sure Bendis has had this one planned for a couple of years, so I hope these last issues make a spectacular climax. Above all I want to see the secret identity issue wrapped up. I'm not sure Brubaker could do as good a job playing with the public identity as Bendis.

I wondered why Ben Urich would even run the story Kingy gives him. I suppose Urich just figures if he doesn't run it, some other reporter will...

I suppose Murdock will say 'why would you, the public, believe a career gangster?'

That was actually spoiled last month, when they revealed the cover of the issue just before that one.

I'm not very encouraged by this story choice, really. But I am interested in seeing whether this will be in Brubaker's run, or whether Bendis is going to cause even more upsets before he leaves.

Poor Foggy. All of Daredevil's lovers must die though. It's a rule. Except for the Black Widow. But, y'know, maybe somebody can do the story where The Hand utilize a cyborg SHIELD agent from a ten year old miniseries to bring Nelson back to life, in a white suit, and he can box Venom and other Spider-Man villains while the Widow gets knocked off and Matt threatens to have sex with Bullseye, to ensure his eventual gruesome murdery death. Because we need more rape in comics at the moment. And more back-from-the-deading. In highly detailed panties.

Was anyone else stuck - with Bendis' 'Daredevil' - recognizing the competency, seeing the nice moments and the actual movement but never really being excited or intrigued by anything as, or right before, it came up?

FinderWolf
20:37 / 17.01.06
Yeah, the penultimate Bendis issue was pretty terrific. I like the idea of Matt going to jail and being arrested, but does *************** really have to DIE an actual, real death? Hopefully we'll find out his death is faked. But, then again, what do you really lose if you lose that character? However, I don't like the idea of DD having barely any supporting cast anymore...

But, then again, what do you really lose if you lose that character?

Please see every issue of Bendis and Maleev's run thus far.

Honestly, I think it's a good and potentially interesting move but I'm just pissed at the spoilage. Nice of Marvel to keep in mind those of us who might have missed the March cover and make sure everyone had it ruined.

Is it a rule that if one company is doing tings right, the other has to do things ass over tea kettle? I mean DC hasn't let anything about anything slip these days. Except for the latest Robin cover. Don't say I didn't warn you!

FinderWolf
23:36 / 17.01.06
Yeah, I noticed that Robin cover (and accompanying solicits) but I hope its misdirection or not the blatant spoiler it appears to be. Then again, I really don't care overmuch what happens to the character they seem to be indicating.

I guess I just mean about ********** that we lose the sidekick/confidant who every once in a while makes wisecracks, gives our hero aid or gives him some sage everyman advice. But then again, it would be like Alfred dying in Batman comics...the Only Real Confidante, gone. I guess Matt still has Milla...but not so much when he's in jail (shades of the old song "Hello Dad, I'm In Jail!")

How long should I not directly refer to this character for, even though a previous poster has already used the name?

Benjamin, you're a talented guy and you like a lot of excellent comics, but it's getting really hard to take any discussion with you seriously where DC and Marvel are concerned. Are Marvel doing innumerable things wrong? Yes. Are DC doing everything right? No.

Wasn't he just commenting on spoilerage? Sure, his use of language was a little dramatic, but there may be a point lurking in there.

Oh, and Decresent, I'd have appreciated a spoiler warning, cheers.

You're saying this factors into a broader position? Fair enough.

By way of explanation, whilst I try and stay on top of my mod duties, I am increasingly disinterested in much of the discussion in this forum. I'm not sure whether it's the state of mainstream comics today, the discussion thereof, the standard of discussion, entirely my own problem, or some synthesis of the above.

Hopefully the love will come back.

I'm sooo glad Maleev's leaving the book, and I'm sooo glad Lark is taking over. The book will finally look like it isn't a rather gritty version of a Look In picture story, oh, and we'll actually get some movement back.

A Daredevil book with a sense of motion. I've almost forgotten what that look's like.
